I had my 231 Top overhaul done last year, with new nickel cylinders put in...I couldn't imagine doing that myself. #YouDaMan! Good luck!!

So, just moved to Yorktown, Virgina, and wondering any recommended mechanics in the area? I'm leaning toward standard Mooney Service Center, but I trust you guys more... My rockets isn't due for the annual until May, but I wanna get on he mechanics list. Any recommendations in the greater Virginia area?

I hope so. Because of my background and flying 20+ years with an HSI, I canNOT handle the compass card anymore!!!! Yea...there are lots of other ways to "do that", but my T crosscheck is in my old-dog-brain. It's the easiest money I've ever spent.

Yea, if you couldn't tell from the pic, that's where I started... And maybe that's why I asked the "g limit" question. Seemed so basic and yet not so readily available to find the answer.

Hahahahaha! It's been a good ride...literally. And thanks, Carusoam... As soon as the Dual G5s get installed (2 weeks-ish), i'm ready to get out there again! Not flying sucks.

I guess this is my point. I'm not looking to max perform "for fun", but I've flown a lot of different jets and airplanes. Lots. Not knowing "the limits" just blows my mind.

You're never at a constant 1G...unless you're on the ground.

Ok...I can't seem to find it in the POH, the search function here, or my best-friend-Google... What's the max G in a M20k Rocket?? This is what happens when I spend a few weeks around bros with RV-7s and old WWI bi-planes. I don't know. I don't plan to start doing loops or anything...but in bad weather and/or the need to maneuver...what's the max G?

Derek, I think when you asked the "must haves" question, we all salivated at this with our "oh boy...what i've learned" response. But in my opinion, it REALLY depends. It depends how you define "must" and it also matters where you keep it. Sounds like you're not hangaring it, so my recommendation is to have cowl and pitot plugs. Very little investment for anti-bird, anti-crap defense. Tie downs and chocks depends where you go, and as part of my instruction checklist, I always made trainees call the FBO for "just checking" info. Thus, ask if they have these items...if not, maybe somewhere else is better for my $100 hamburger lunch. Still, that being said, a set of tie downs and chocks is a NO BRAINER as far as investment goes. You just bought a $XXX,XXX piece of machinery and the few pesos to have just-in-case tie downs, chocks, tow bar...is easy. Do it. Now, the fun part...you'll realize what you need with the most important thing: experience. Where you are and how/where you fly will determine what you "must have." I have realized that a cover is MY must have because i worry about chips and dirt and etc; others will disagree. And that's what's awesome. One man's trash is another mans treasure, and one man's "must have" is another pilot's "waste of money". So, enjoy the ride and don't stress. I've wasted money on unneeded crap, but it makes me a smarter owner. enjoy it all. -

DG, you're about to make me be bold on this forum and I dislike you for that because I KNOW these guys on here. Bottom line, keep stalking and reading and learning from these guys. Experience is impossible to achieve without time, but knowledge is readily available to those that seek it. Seek it here. Read, study, research...repeat. Ok, to my point and advice... Nobody knows "you" but you. Better put, I'd suggest you do some self-reflection and be honest with yourself from a task-load and ability to cope with dynamic environments easily, etc. I'm very new to the GA and the mooney world, but I've flown military aircraft for 22 years and instructed/evaluated in 5 different jets (and continue to do so). What I'd recommend is be honest with yourself. The mooney is NOT scary to fly and land...IF you're disciplined with airspeed. I almost didn't buy one because of the scary things I read online, but I'm sooooooo glad I did. The mooney is slick-as-snot, but if you get a good instructor and you believe your hand-eye coordination and cross-check is solid, then do not hesitate. Any aircraft, without proper training, will be a bad choice. A mooney will exasperate this because it's fast and won't dissipate energy as your current aircraft does, but don't be afraid of it either.

Carusoam is soooooo right. Overthink. And then when you think you might have your decision, DG...overthink again. It's not that you can't "undo" a plane buy, but your pride and your wallet will fight against that decision to undo it once you buy. Just my humble opinion...

I'm very interested in the gnx 375 and thinking about one myself. I'll be very curious what you think when you're done with the install. What gps are you going to have? Or are you going to use this as your standalone, all-in-one?

Can I ask "how low" is pretty low? As I went back into my logbook, I've flown less hours than I thought...which is bad for sanity but good relative for this conversation. Still, it's at the forefront and top on my "watch list".

Skip, that was an awesome summary. Thank you for that insight. I think my takeaway is it all just depends. My Continental engine is solid, it holds temperatures of CHT/EGT very well, and I just need to watch it. It might be awesome or it might be an issue, but it seems it depends from motor to motor, and powerplants simply differ. So, I will be vigilant, but at this point, it's too early to tell. Thank you!

And that's why I'm not toooooo concerned. I fly her gently; 65% power--and watching CHT and EGT very closely. CHT maintains in the low 300s with the power settings I'm using in climb and level-off. I feel confident I'm treating her like it's her Bday/Anniversary when I take her out, and it's only been like 10-15 hours, but I just wanted the experience on here to doublecheck my new-to-GA brain. That's actually good news to hear... My bird is a Rocket (continental 520) with 800 SMOH. And what I'm hearing from you and Carusoam, it sounds more normal (1qt per 20 hours) than abnormal, but I'll definitely watch it closely. Thank you!
