Portable power station as battery charger and block heater?
Boilermonkey replied to skipswift's topic in General Mooney Talk
Yeah, most don't have the output amps required to run a block heater. You'd be better off buying a small gas powered inverter. -
Of course the txt from Foreflight just has a URL...I guess I can post that here: https://plan.foreflight.com/wb/share/accept/9b50ceXnrEGr

I'll send you a PM with the W&B.

Our M20M has plenty of leg room in the back sets. The seats also fold down nicely for the dogs and cargo. If you've got dogs and plan to fly high, you'll need to think of O2 or staying below a safe altitude for them...not sure what that is for dogs. I usually fly with 65 gallons in the tanks giving me at ~3hr range with reserves. It's great for that mission, but your son can't join. Even if you don't carry much fuel, you'll be over the maximum landing weight with all three of you, dogs, and cargo. Your son, dogs, cargo, and 60 gallons of fuel work too, but then your wife would need to fly commercial. That might sound weird, but that's the deal I made with my wife. I'm a big guy and we've got kids. I take the kids, she gets the day off and flies commercial with our bags. We both win in that scenario. The kids won't be around forever, so as they age out, we've got a great plane for the two of us.

Well done. Two ship next time ;-)

At least they have a nice tailwind on the way back.

With weather moving into the Indy area and some big wind gusts I opened Foreflight from my desk to see what the weather looked like. I flew yesterday, but today's conditions were pretty nasty. I tuned into KIND tower freq. to see if any of the commercial guys were struggling with the winds. I then noticed that a M20M was taking off out of KIND, the same type of aircraft we have. I took at look at the flight plan. 60 knot head wind, turbulence, icing. N11KK, if you are out there, how was it really? I tend to avoid these types of conditions, but I know the airplane with FIKI is capable of it. Were the conditions as forecasted? Were you able to get on top? How bad was the turbulence? Looks like you had a bit of a deviation, did you see that you couldn't top it, bad nexrad returns, or something else. ...how was it?

What's the tail number? Nope, not Indy Air. Anderson Aircraft Service 765.378.0539 email: mx@andersonaircraft.com KAID Anderson Municipal Airport 282 Airport Road, Anderson, IN 46017

Keith's shop, Anderson Aviation, at KAID (Anderson, IN) has done a great job with our Mooneys for over 10 years. He even fixed issues that a Mooney Service Center messed up!

Exactly what I've done since flying Mooney's.

If you can't look at a partnership as equal partners, don't do it. I've been a part of a few partnerships, in fact I'm in a two person partnership now. The only way it works is if you are like minded and treat it as equals. That doesn't mean you fly the same amount, that can be addressed by having an hourly dry rate and determining what fixed costs are equally split no matter what. However, you have to be able to agree on upgrades, how to treat the plane, what situations take priority when there are schedule conflicts, etc.

Heat not that hot. Later E model.
Boilermonkey replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have chased the heat issue in our M20M to no end. New seals seem to not really seal all the way. The simple owner approved modification is to stuff a rag in the cabin air inlet. Still warmish at best, but better than nothing. -
Here are the 3D printed mounts that I made for our M20M and for a friend's M20J. The difference being one or two receptacles.

Alt Breaker Pops when Field Turned Off
Boilermonkey replied to Boilermonkey's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Thanks for the advise. We'll take a look at the wiring. Wilmar did the engine install and I remember talking about the diode when they were having issues with the voltage regulator. Maxwell fixed the regulator. Perhaps the diode is faulty or reversed in the installation. -
We are having and intermittent issue with the left alternator circuit breaker popping when we turn off the Alternator field switch at shutdown. No odd indications on the JPI 930. The system works fine on startup and can run off right, left, both alternators just fine. The voltage regulator was OH be Maxwell last year when we did a factory reman on the engine. I assume the alternators we OH or new at that point too. Any ideas what could cause the CB to pop when energizing the field? M20M Bravo 1993. -Jeremy

IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?
Boilermonkey replied to Schllc's topic in General Mooney Talk
Another big part of IFR is radio comms. Even with a bunch of hood time, it is easy for new pilots to get flustered with ATC comms and get confused. I found several CFII who do a lot of training, but don't spend time in the system who struggle too. Understanding what to expect and when is important. It's also important to know what to say when you don't understand. For example, getting a re route or change of approach. Sometimes the fixes might be unfamiliar, you need them spelled out, etc. Sometimes it's best to ask for a vector and then phonetic spelling. That gets you going in the right direction and allows time to get things sorted out. ...of course you need to be able to fly vectors.... -
SBAS (WASS or EGNOS) is not like having an extra GPS/GNSS satellite. SBAS consists of a ground and space segment. The ground segment monitors the GPS/GNSS satellites for health and performance. The biggest thing they capture are regional atmospheric delays (something that RTK does too, but on a 10-30km scale). That data is then sent up to satellites in a GEO orbit that transmit the corrections over L band to a SBAS enabled receiver. Those corrections and integrity are then used along with the standard GPS/GNSS satellite signals. EGNOS works for GPS and/or GAL. As for avionics using GAL, I've seen some for large aircraft. I'm personally waiting for a multi-frequency and multi-constellation system to come out before I upgrade from our GTN750.

This happened to me after a engine and prop overhaul and install at Wilmar. The "donut" that stabilizes the spinner on the nub of the prop hadn't been installed. After 12 hours it fractured the bulkhead due to shaking and imbalance. They came out and fixed it. Replaced a few screws that were damaged in the process as well, one had to be drilled out. Once you find the part, you'll need the local A&P to pull the prop off, install, and rehang the prop. Takes 2-3 hours.

There have been many threads about LEDs, owner maintenance, etc. My take away was....go ahead. We have replaced most lights with LED, however, not all LEDs are built the same way. For instance many can interfere with your radios. Those purchased from avionics companies or distributors are usually ok, even if they are not PMA/TSO. Buying on Amazon is a bit of trial and error. For example I tried to replace our position lights on the trailing edge of our wing tip on the M20M with an LED recommended on MooneySpace from Amazon. It created static on the radios at various frequencies and others were fine. I replaced with Halogens and the static went away. For 20W each, replacement every 5-10 years, and easy access to change, it wasn't worth it. For $15 and 10 minutes of time it was worth a shot.

Inertial Reel Seatbelt for M20M?
Boilermonkey replied to Boilermonkey's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
The Alpha ones don't list M20M as an option. Unless someone has other info.
