Backlash against Vector Airport Systems
PeteMc replied to DXB's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Can you give a little more details? Was it 4 different projects or you really tore out everything that was there and reinstalled a new system 4 times? Or were they 4 different phases to complete 1 larger project? If it was a total replacement each time, was it all paid by the FAA/Gov or were the different projects just paid by the Airport? Yeah, I get that bureaucrats often play games. But this one seems a bit out there. I'd expect them to keep funding diffrerent projects if they were just trying to dump money into the airport. -
No... But what if a heading was off by 10 degrees? Or an altitude was off by 200 ft?
-
Good to know.

@Rick Junkin @toto I'll have to look at the latest G Pilot videos. The one I watched when they first releast their SmartCharts did not indicate they were creating their own plate. Just that they had a Route layout and side windows that had the other textural information from the Plate.
-
Okay, but isn't that their MAP presentation of the Approach? Or is it really a separate presentation like going to the Approach Plate like you used to do? I thought the Approach "Plate" still existed in G Pilot as it does in ForeFlight and it is still either Jepp or Gov. So... You're really talking about G Pilots "SmartChart" and not that Garmin has created their own "Plate." (And I only went through some of the early release info on SmartCharts, so I could have missed that they are playing with definitions.)
-
I'm a little confused on your terminology, but then I don't use G Pilot. To me the "Plate" used to be the piece of paper I pulled out of my Jepp binder and clipped to the yoke. In ForeFlight I still have a Plates Tab and it comes with the Gov. "Plates" or I could subscribe to Jepp. On the Map Tab I see FF's ROUTE depiction of what is on the "Plate" and I can even have the Plate overlayed onto the Map. But I'm confused about what you are calling the "GP Plate" as I do not believe Garmin creates their own Approach Plates. They use Gov or Jepp.... Unless I'm wrong, hence the question on terminology.

Adding a landing/pulsating light to the J and K wingtip
PeteMc replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
That's what I thought too. But wasn't sure why you were bring "experimental" into it. There are a lot of approved LED (and other) Landing Light and Wingtip Recognition lights that will give you a lot more output. So it should be pretty simple to upgrade. One other big plus about the LED landing lights is that I don't get the Low Voltage light as quickly. I pretty much have to be at a low RPM where it would have come on anyway. -

One minor point... Note that the Steve shows he's based at CYKF. So our FAA rules do not apply. -
Actually kind of doubt that. And if I were connected to a company like Jeppesen, it would be a REALLY STUPID business move to recreate the wheel. Especially when you already have access to all of their data.
-
Just to clarify.... There is no change with the Chart/Approach Plate. FF is using Jepp data to create the Route display, Profile display and adding the new Approach Drawer on the side of the Map page. Whether you use Jepp or Gov Approach Plates and Enroute Charts, they will stay the same.

Are you sure the wingtip lights are considered experimental? Usually things that are approved in the US, especially from a company like Whelen, are also approved in Cda. -

Reach out to @OSUAV8TER. I have the original Whelen wingtip recognition lights and upgraded to the LED bulb through Gallagher Aviation. He should be able to tell you want the lates wingtip options are. And if you don't have a LED landing light, you might want to consider that too. I have the option to switch my pulsing lights to solid on if I need more light. But never have since I put in the LED landing light. Here's his contact info if he doesn't chime in: https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com gallagheraviationllc@gmail.com 1-833-425-5288 <-- Call/Text, please leave a voicemail if I do not answer 513-401-6495 <-- Call/Text/MMS, please leave a voicemail if I do not answer -
FS: BatteryMINDer Charger Sale through 8.31.25
PeteMc replied to OSUAV8TER's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Just curious... I don't know if I've ever seen anyone with an external plug, just the one where you take the batter panel (door) off. Is there one? Or is it not worth cutting a new opeining in the battery panel? -
Can we put a limit of new posts per 24 hours in this forum?
PeteMc replied to AndreiC's topic in General Mooney Talk
Part of it I'm assuming is the platform and that they have not stepped up to prevent Bots or Spammers from getting in to begin with, so they can then gain access to the individual sites here. I had read a while back how Invision was taking a new direction. And even though they are continuing the Invision Community, my guess is they are putting in the minimum resouces and funding. Then you have Craig keeping Mooneyspace up on his own. If you look at some of the spam messages lately, they are all posted in a matter of minutes. He could be having breakfast when that happens and they'll be there until he (alone) has the time to log in and remove them. Multiple Admins (or us "SysOps" back in the AVSIG days ) apparently is a risk, again due to the single security level of All Access as an Admin. -

I'm surprised there aren't different levels of access. But even so, there are people that would know what to do and what not to do. But I get what you're saying... So the first lesson would be on how to reload a backup! -
I actually sent in a Feature Request to FF to put the fees more upfront in the Airport info. Since it is becoming more of an issue, they were looking into it. Also suggested they promote that their Users send in reports on the latest fees so it can be kept up to date. Simialar to the other User comments like Fuel, etc.

There are probably a few of us here with Admin or Support experience that can help with that kind of workload. -

I don't know if the site you use allows for questions to be asked before you can be accepted. But properly worded... well improperly worded questions that will confuse AI might help. If you don't answer the question correctly, you don't get in. And then there's also a 24hr approval period, where the questions are reviewd and manually approved. -
Busted into a class Charlie yesterday
PeteMc replied to Thedude's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
All true, but not relative to the original post. In this discussion the pilot was in touch with ATC, which is whom you talk to before entering a Class C, right? You do not call the Tower directly when going into the primary Airport in a Class C. Now you may question if the pilot was on the correct frequency or even the the correct sector, but that is NOT on the pilot, that is totally an ATC issue. I have no idea what sectors have been combined, what frequencies have been changed do to maintenance (scheduled or otherwise), etc., etc. So if I'm talking to ATC my entire flight, they fly me right up to the edge of the Airport and tell me to contact the Twr, I've done my part. If there's an issue that the Twr didn't know I was coming, that's on ATC. A lot of pilots were getting yelled at when NY Approach covering the ISP Class C were releasing them right at the edge of the FRG Class D, and sometimes even inside. No pilot's were dinged, to my knowledge, but it is true that the Class C and D are separate and it was on the pilot to directly contact the Twr. I remember it was a hot topic at one of the Airport meetings and the Twr Chief pushed it up on his side. Shortly after that when transitioning the Class C you were cut loose while in the C to contact FRG. Worked great. (But again, this is nearby C & D Airspace, not the same as going into the primary Apt in a Class C.) -

PeteMc replied to Thedude's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
This guy seems WAY out of the loop. You don't call the Twr in a Class C 10 miles out. Was this the Tower Chief or one of the Controllers? Possibly the Controller you yelled at you in the first place? (That seems to have forgotten what the process is.) If it wasn't the Tower Chief, I'd call back and be sure to ask for them and if not their, ask for the name and either call back or ask them to call you. Other option is to go into the FSDO at SBA next time you're there and see what they say and confirm the name of the Twr Chief with them. -

I don't know of any Class C where you contact the Tower first. And I didn't see anywhere what Freq you were on, by chance was it 120.55 which is what the Sectional shows? And let us know what the Tower Chief says when you talk to them. My guess s/he may have a little discussion with the Local Controller as it sounds like a TRACON issue, not a Pilot issue. -
I'm guessing they had it all ready to go and were waiting for OSH to announce. Then G Pilot decided to release early to get all the buzz.

I went with the non rivited RAM clamp because it was available. And I'll probably need a new engine before I have to replace it. (Clamp needs to be replaced at 2021hrs.) If I get to the point that the clamp needs to be replaces, I'll seriously be asking how far past TBO do I want to keep going. A lot will depend upon what, if any, serious issues I have. Last engine I had a Piston Pin Plug issue right around 1800hrs. Not a major engine failure, but would have taken a fair amount of time and money to fix right at TBO. So no point in fixing that and then have something else pricy happen right after that, etc., etc. So if the engine has no major issues, I'll keep flying it until it starts getting pricy to keep it running.

I guess there is a link in there from the FAA. But it is the text that I copied out of the email that is what's different. The first link you wanted me to look at is a letter to an individual. The email is the FAA making an OFFICIAL anoucement to all involved. Since it takes a while sometimes for the FAA system to actually get emails out, I figured some people might like to know about the change. NOTE: I didn't bother reading the letter since the V-Band is not an issue for me anymore. So if there is some different info in it, then I guess I'm not commenting on whatever it says at all.
-
The PDF/Letter?? Okay... With a quick glace at the letter it looks like the same information to an individual. But it's not an email from the FAA sent to the masses.
