  1. I’m not sure what’s happening here, but I’m not going to contribute further to this thread.
  2. I’m pretty confused, really. The article clearly talks about enroute/airborne calls to FSS via RCO. Maybe that’s a term that I misunderstand? I’ve only ever seen the term “RCO” used to refer to a remote FSS frequency that’s available on the ground.
  3. Huh, okay. The whole thread seemed to be about people calling FSS in the air. An RCO is just used to get FSS on the ground. If that’s all we’re talking about then I doubt anyone would even notice.
  4. But we’re also talking about all airborne FSS frequencies, right? Not just the RCOs available on the ground?
  5. Before airborne weather was a thing, I used to use Flight Watch regularly. They were a fantastic resource when bouncing around in the soup. But Flight Service has never been critical when airborne - I’ve only had a handful of times when ATC rejected a pop-up clearance and asked me to call FSS. I guess this just means they won’t have that choice
  6. Thank you - you probably already mentioned that in the other thread, but I couldn’t find it. Honestly it’s hard to see how the word “overhaul” is worth $10k here. Sounds like the right decision to me.
  7. @hammdo did your shop give you a quote for an overhaul versus an IRAN? Curious what the difference was in both time and money.
  8. Yep, it’s an intriguing option - but I’d be interested to know what the same shop charges for an IRAN versus an overhaul. It sounds like the only real difference is mandatory replacement parts that would be deemed “serviceable” in an IRAN. If a shop said it’s $10k extra just for the liability associated with the word “overhaul” in the log, I think I’d go elsewhere.
  9. Yes, a field overhaul aiui is done by anyone other than the manufacturer. So an overhaul at a big name shop is still a field overhaul.
  10. Do we have current numbers on field overhauls? Seems like most of the numbers thrown around on here are about factory remans, which tbh have almost no appeal for me after reading Mike Busch’s writings on the subject.
  11. I think @hammdo had mentioned an IRAN done for about $23k in lieu of an overhaul
  12. If I remember correctly from the earlier discussion, a recent IRAN was only like $23k, and a six-week turnaround. It might be worth doing just for the turnaround time, even if there was no cost savings. I'd rather have the plane in the air than sitting on the ground waiting for a solid gold factory OH to arrive in three years.
  13. +1 There are just way too many unknowns over the life of an engine to pay for an overhaul solely on the basis of resale value. Spend the money that needs to be spent for you to safely enjoy the aircraft, and don’t worry about the next owner. You’re just as likely to get pushed around on the price, but you’ll have $35k more to play with.
  14. The standard Don Maxwell hot start video?
  15. I treat a warm start like a hot start. I don’t touch the boost pump, just crack the throttle and slowly advance mixture while cranking. It usually takes about 5-6 seconds to get it started, when the mixture reaches about the halfway point.
  16. Imo you’re doing the right thing by thinking this through and debriefing your actions. You landed safely, no bent metal, but you might do it differently with an “unable” next time. If you wanted to fill out an ASRS form, you could get all of these thoughts on paper and perhaps help the next person in a similar situation. If you think there is some disciplinary action warranted against the controller, I’m pretty sure that there is an anonymous safety reporting program for ATC. But I don’t know the details of that - hopefully one of the controllers on MS will have insight. I’ve certainly had my share of events where I thought the controller was in the wrong, but it’s hard to know what else s/he was dealing with at the same time, and I just generally try to be graceful about it and assume the best intentions.
  17. I’m not on Beechtalk, but the document says it’s version 5. This would be good feedback to provide the author, especially if he hasn’t already submitted it.
  18. This is the biggest reason I decided to burn the real estate on a non-R GTX and a non-R GMA. I didn’t have exactly the same situation as OP, but my GTN once went blank and rebooted while on a long XC flight. It probably took about 10 seconds total, but it felt like 10 minutes. It never happened before or since, and the avionics shop kind of shrugged. I chalked it up to a dodgy software release, and felt better with the next one.
  19. @A64Pilot might have input on the C140
  20. I had the same reaction. For me, “approach” is not synonymous with “coupled approach” so it wasn’t obvious at first that this was an autopilot discussion. But I think that’s where we landed. That said, I do like the basic fact pattern followed by a “what do you do” question - always interesting to hear different takes.
  21. 350 would be a steal. The ones I see on Walmart now are not that great, but maybe there are some locally available for less
  22. That looks way less scary in the screenshot than I remember it being at full speed
  23. Yeah, removing the 100 (knot) speed cap requires the $250/mo plan. They did announce a $10/10g plan yesterday for occasional roaming - which would be great for aircraft use. But the 100kt limitation is still in place for now.
