  1. That’s a MidContinent SAM. If you want one for your own you’re looking at about 11k plus install.
  2. There are many older twin engine aircraft with wider than Mooney panels, such as C400 and PA350 series that are configured this way too. I consider it dangerous in the event of a primary AH failure with no autopilot and having to (even slightly) turn one’s head to the right side deviating from normal scan for even a second or two on a dark, turbulent night trying to keep straight and level or conducting an instrument approach without slope guidance. I have no idea if there are any loss of control stats in these scenarios and it’s obviously allowed, but I disagree with it.
  3. @Medicpilot over to you
  4. Owning just one starts to add up
  5. I have synchronised LEDs, but it’s a personal choice. Back in the day, which wasn’t that long ago there was no choice.
  6. Hello Paul. Do you recommend the same min speed in a J?.
  7. I do, including a fire containment bag. Both are kept in the large pocket pouch attached to the back of the front pax seat. Hope I never have to use them.
  8. I wonder if that was part of the reason why Paul Bertorelli decided to retire. I miss his articles.
  9. I don’t mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but are you sure the Carling V switches are approved? The switches may not need to be approved, I don’t know and the Carling website isn’t much help. I ask because the answer to such a question asked on the Spruce website is that these are not FAA approved. https://www.aircraftspruce.com.au/catalog/elpages/nwm-switch-light.php?clickkey=193438 The switches do look nice.
  10. Luckily, no injuries. The aircraft lifted off the runway, encountered a strong downdraft and crashed off the end of the runway into a fence. No injuries. https://asn.flightsafety.org/wikibase/407627
  11. Sorry Alan, I just edited the post to clarify. My 1980 J has a tube like structure from underneath the aircraft to the actual step, which except for the tube, does look like an airfoil. I assume that yours being a much later J is entirely airfoil shaped, which I would expect to have no drag.
  12. I remember a comment many years ago from former Mooney factory test pilot, Bob Kromer on the old Mooney Mailing List way before MS that he tested this exact thing in I think it was a J with testing equipment attached, with and without a step. The difference was no more than 0.5 of a knot without the step.
  13. Congrats and welcome. The tail always reminds me of the Aerostars I flew back in the day. Like a Mooney, the Aerostar is a wonderful and fast twin to fly and an apt aircraft for Mooney to have been involved with.
  14. I also have a G3X setup with an iPad 6 mini. I don’t like having the iPad mounted on the yoke and for me, it has to be within reasonable front sight as I don’t like the idea of having to keep turning my head to view the chart in case I need to hand fly an approach. So, the iPad is mounted on a spider grip RAM that is suction cupped to the left window with the bottom part of the cup just below and between the top of the storm window and pillar. Because the iPad is a mini, I can have the approach plate adjusted in landscape mode with a great view of the profile. The G3X has an excellent, editable checklist layout that I have displayed during the approach on the MFD side while using the navigator MFD for tracking. Shooting an approach with this setup is so easy. I also have approach charts on the G3X in case the iPad flakes out. I only attach the iPad holder to the side window in preparation for an approach and remove it after landing. Otherwise I use Rich’s copilot’s seat method. @dkkim73 Apologies if this is not possible with your G1000. It’s been so long since I’ve flown a G1000 setup that I cannot remember whether it can be done.
  15. V/S mode needs to be properly monitored, particularly when climbing. It can easily be forgotten and if you enter bad enough icing conditions, it will keep trimming up without you noticing to maintain the entered climb rate while the speed decays. If this is not noticed, it can lead to a stall. It has happened before.
  16. Good idea, but I prefer just “UP”. On short final you don’t want to be messing with switches.
  17. You are much better off with the Avi tray. It is a well built and solid bit of gear.
  18. If you’re considering a S-Tec 3100, forget about it. Mooney is not on the AML and Genesys failed dismally to get it there with their hopeless sales team.
  19. Don’t forget, in the event of a runway trim when you disconnect the AP by pressing the disconnect button, hold it in the pressed position and don’t let go until after you’ve pulled the AP circuit breaker.
  20. That is true. Is it known whether there was also an instructor in the aircraft? Good to see you back.
  21. My favourite is the MSE. But in terms of the most innovative, influential, aesthetic, appealing and most ahead of its time, IMHO is the first J.
  22. IIRC, Paul had the Encore conversation done. They maybe similar.
  23. Thanks for the responses. That is just what I wanted to read. I have the G5 as a backup AI to the G3X as per the STC. I don’t have a 2nd G5 as a HSI.
