  1. Thats a huge bonus. I have to keep a cheat sheet in my plane for the 700. I always hit the wrong one and have to start over. Very frustrating.
  2. Didn't they do away with the fuel line in the cabin in the mid 70s? Seems like DMax posted about this on the MAPA list a while back but I don't recall. Mine is an 82J.
  3. Thanks for the input everyone. Right now I think I'm leaning toward the 830 as the upgrade cost from the 700 is about the same for both the 730 and the 830. The 900 is several thousand more and I don't know there's much of an advantage for me to remove the factory gauges. Maybe if I completely modernize my panel someday I will do that. Looked at the EI products as well. Their TSO'd monitor looks like it's got a superior user interface but it doesn't take much to beat the two button JPI interface. Problem again is he large cost difference with not much return...
  4. Will the existing probes work with both systems or do you have to replace the whole set if you switch companies? I'll take a look at EI in more detail. Haven't really thought much about them yet since I figured it would add a lot of cost.
  5. Whoops wrong forum. Can someone move this to avionics?
  6. I currently have a JPI 700 with FF in my '82 J and plan on upgrading to something more modern. I've been looking at the 730, 830, and 900 but can't decide. Does anyone have any thoughts on the usefulness of having MP/RPM on the monitor (830) or being able to remove the stock gauges all together (900). I have room in my panel for any of them but I'm not sure if all the bells and whistles are worth the added expense. The 730 would give me the more modern look I'm going for as well as the ability to see all the parameters at once but it doesn't look like the 830 is that much more money and gives me a little more info. On the 900, getting rid of the old stock gauges would be nice and it would be cool to have the differential fuel remaining in each tank but it would likely cost a lot more with little return. Thoughts?
  7. Seems like it's been a really bad few weeks for aviation.
  8. How many hours were on your mags?
  9. It seems like misguided anger. Yeah of course people die flying planes but a lot more die riding motorcycles, swimming in pools, and boating every year. I would argue aviation gets more attention becuase accidents are less common and make a more interesting news story. I can't say I ever feel shocked when I hear someone fed on a motorcycle but it's a different story for a plane crash.
  10. Doesn't he recommend to do it with the engine "brutally" leaned to magnify the EGT rise?
  11. What do you guys use to find your LOP setting? Lean find or just the big mixture pull until you feel it decelerate?
  12. I was just thinking about posting the same question this morning before I saw this. I was thinking about something that not only looks better but will also make it colder so when i grab it to pull my chair forward in the heat I don't get second degree burns. Maybe a piece of foam but that might look pretty crappy.
  13. Rags, Check your messages. Just sent you a potential solution for tomorrow if you have time.
  14. This discussion makes me question whether or not I should get some sticks to measure fuel level. I've got wing sight gauges though. What is everyone's thoughts on using those alone?
  15. Is this the second violation by a Mooney in the last two weeks?
  16. Thanks for the reply Phil. My wife wants to know when you're gonna make them in pink.
  17. That makes sense to me. Especially since the vibration starts a little before the change in EGT temp. Could be vibration induced probe or wiring malfunction. If it's shaking a lot maybe thats why it keeps going up and down as the circuit gets interupted and is restored rapidly
  18. Please tell me you did.
  19. Phil, Great news about the music jack. How does it work and will it be on the new set that I ordered about 3 days ago? Is it just a 3.5mm female audio jack that I could plug my iphone into?
  20. Just placed an order for the Halos a few days ago based on Hank's recommendations. Can't wait to give them a try.
  21. I'll throw in my two cents. Highly recommend David Savoie at US Aircraft Finance. Took him only 4 business days from the first time I talked to him to actually close on the loan. Interest rate was excellent, low closing costs, and always promptly returned my phone calls or email. A+ Also Cliff Bertoff at Falcon was able to beat everyone else by about a grand. Also very quick to reply to emails and was very informative. Again A+
  22. Do you have a picture of this?
  23. I'm sure I missed a bunch but where magazines do you subscribe to? Right now I subscribe to AOPA Pilot, IFR magazine, Flying magazine, and MAPA Log. I also read the Mooney Flyer.
  24. Is going full rich for the 3-4 minutes you're in the pattern really causing that much of a problem? Maybe you could argue that going rich increases lead deposition and maintenance costs but in a go-around seconds count and the second it takes to go full rich may be the difference between life and death. I know this isn't the case 99% of the time but it goes back to the same issue with gear ups. Distractions and unusual circumstances complicate things when time matters most. I second the notion that lead free avgas is gonna be great.
  25. If you did that then it would definitely be an evaporative cooler. Speaking of urinating in flight, can't remember if it was on here or another forum where there was a thread about rigging a hose out the pilot side window for micturition. Seems like a great idea... for making a mess.
