Yea, we are also going to the show today. When we left FL we heard the controller informing others of the practice in Pensacola. When we got to Houston Angel 7 was on approach.

We flew out on Wednesday also. Wings Over Houston is this weekend.

Paint Shop Recommendation near Daytona Beach
thomas1142 replied to mooneyflyer's topic in General Mooney Talk
The final product from Hawk. I am satisfied with the results, extremely pleased that Joe worked me in almost at the last minute. Stoped by his shop in Feb, dropped of the airplane in May and picked it up end of August. It helped we were out of the country during that time. I received pictures of the stripping, masking and some towards the finishing. Much appreciated. During the inspection I did see a small run or two that were worked on, mostly gone. When I got it home a did a much more detailed inspection I have notice some spots of not enough paint as explained by previous posts. Joe stated that he stands by his work and any issue that I have he will take care of. I’m planning on having him “touch up” a few places when I return the airplane next summer for a windshield replacement that was forgotten this year, which he said he would do at cost. -
Picking up from paint shop, what should I look for?
thomas1142 posted a topic in General Mooney Talk
I will be picking up my J from the paint shop next week. What should I be looking at when I pick it up? -
I had starting issues after rebuilt mags. Mags were sent back and some issues were corrected. After reinstalling I still had some issues starting whereas before it would start perfectly all the time. Two things were adjusted. It was determined that the fuel mixture was a bit lean, annnnd I adjusted how I primed before starting. Before on a cold start I would prime 7-8 seconds, and do nothing for a hot start. Now about 3 second prime for cold, and just a bump on the prim for hot start.

Does an AD that was issued prior to your aircraft manufacturing date still apply? Such as AD 85-24-03, Fuel Contamination, issued in 1985 apply to a Mooney manufactured in 1997.

Yup, both tanks were looked at and had some preventive sealing applied. I’m using Scheme Designers to help in developing a good layout. I should have something from them in three weeks or so.

Received word from my MX shop that they will fit me in prior to paint. All worked out after all. Thanks to all replies

Hi Don, Glad this post is making the rounds again. If you are still making them or have a pair handy, I would appreciate it. I have a 1997 M20J. Thanks Angelos

They will have the plane for three months while I’m out of the country, that’s why I’m considering doing the annual at the same time. I just haven’t heard or read anything about their maintenance operation, plenty on their painting.

I have a reservation in early May for a paint job at Hawk Aircraft Services. My Annual is due by end of May. Thinking of having them do the annual while they have the airplane, less down time. Has anyone used them for an annual? Thanks

Changing Spark Plugs; what should I know

I had to have the maintenance shop change the plugs, but I was right there ready for the next time. -

Changing Spark Plugs; what should I know

During Annual I was informed they performing as required, and since then I’ve been having starting issues. So… -
First time changing the plugs on my 1997 J, anything special I need to know?

Mags were removed and sent back to the shop that rebuild them. Received them yesterday and were reinstalled. I was told that “brushes” were changed out on the starting mag. Airplane started up right away, and I turned it off and waited various time lengths for restarts. All went well. Question, Is a 90 to 100 RPM drop acceptable for rebuilt mags?
-
The mags were taken off during the annual and sent away for the 500 inspection, then reinstalled. Same mechanic did the work. They were sent to Maxwells Magnetos, Palm Coast FL

Tried to do some trouble shooting today, couldn’t even start the engine. Normal, hot, even flooded start procedures would not work. It would turn over, cough like starting a few times, never actually starting. Really frustrated, memories from when first bought it.
-
Nope, definitely not acceptable even though it’s within POH margins. Sounds like it they will be going back to the shop. Thanks

Can a MX shop check both internal and external timing, or does it have to go back to the shop for internal timing adjustment?
-
???
-
Timing was spot on when it was checked the second time. I have an EDM 900 for engine instrumentation. If they did not keep the plugs in some type of order (which I’m sure they did not since they didn5 think they would have to reinstall them), and they didn’t get the plugs in the same location that they were removed from, would that creat an issue?

A bit of background. When I first bought 30FM I had a horrible time with engine starts. Hot, cold, flooded normal start, did not matter. I was stranded three different times at a fuel stop. I was ready to sell till maintenance finally took a good look and determined that both mags were not performing correctly and one was even loose and could not hold timing. Mags were replaced and for the next five years I’ve had absolutely no problems staring under any condition . Fast forward, I picked up 30FM from MX after its annual. It was time for the 500hr mag inspection. Did an IRAN on both. Now I have a 120RPM drop on both, before the IRAN the drop was 90-100RPM. Another issue was with the spark plugs. I was told they were not performing correctly when hot. MX had a hard time starting the airplane when it was hot. For five years I had no issue. They did not have any new plugs but did have a used set that were check out as good. I said to go ahead and replace the plugs with the used ones. When I did the run up the engine ran terrible on either plugs, left or right did not matter. Replaced with original plugs and it ran as before, but with the 120RPM drop on the mags. Question(s); Mag drop is not acceptable for redone mags, correct? Could the plugs be causing my issues with starting? (I had them recheck the timing)? How do I know plugs are bad? Any special considerations when changing plugs? thanks Angelos
