  1. I would never consider tearing down an engine based on oil analysis.. Filter contents, yes. The report shows filter contents to be within normal limits.. I would change the oil and filter frequently and have a good engine mechanic examine the filter contents. Cam and lifter wear/ corrosion would not be expected to result in catastrophic failure if in fact you have that..
  2. I have a GTX 345 now so I am selling my GDL 39 3d. It has the yoke and interface for the Garmin 795 which is nice because both the 795 and GDL work off one cig. lighter plug. Other interface cables are available from Sporty's and other places. It does not have the standby battery. Comes with the box and everything it came with. Works fine. Price is plus shipping.
  3. I followed Trek's procedure on a regular cross country flight Friday and passed the test including no "air on ground problem".. The only "rule"airspace I was in was above 10,000 and I made 0 turns in it.
  4. I passed the test Fri. making a regular 250 mile cross country flight at 11,500. Made only two turns-- one 75 degrees and one 65 degrees--neither in Rule airspace.
  5. I had a new GTX 345 installed in my 81 J. FAA test for the rebate shows "air on ground" failure--which I understand means it is reporting airborne when the airplane is on the ground. Neither Garmin nor FAA seem to know how to correct this. Seems like Garmin could at least let my shop know what configuration settings to check My shop is a fair distance away and I have already had it back one time. Trial and error guessing is not the best. Has anyone else had this problem? At this point I can't recommend the GTX 345 or Garmin's customer support.
  6. I don't care where anyone gets theit tanks sealed. My only disagreement was with Don's contradiction of my statement about it being hard to get a plane up there and back. I have done it and it is expensive and time consuming.
  7. Glad it was so easy for you to get your plane there and back. By the way how much did it cost you to fly your plane the 2,600 n.m. there and back from Santa Clara?. It's only 2,000 from San Antonio. And the round trip airfare from San Jose to Minneapolis?. How many nights hotel and how much for meals?. Do you place any value on your time?
  8. Check with Houston Tank Specialists in Eagle Lake. I had a tank sealed at Willimar,MN and was happy with the job but......It is the hardest place to get to from Texas. It is in the boondocks west of Minneapolis. I had a guy with airline privileges take it up there and it still cost at least 1,500 to get it up there and back.. I flew commercial to Minneapolis, took a $50 cab ride to a small airport on the west side of town. Paid a pilot to fly over and pick me up and fly us back to Willmar.. Flew to Omaha and spent the night. Got home the next day. I will try to get it done closer to home next time.
  9. I had a very unpleasant experience dealing with Brian Negen.
  10. Didn't trade it. It's for sale on this site.
  11. I took advantage of Garmin's recent package deal on a GTN 625 and GTX 345(r) for $9,960 . This is about $5,000 less than regular list price on them separately. The 625 does not have comm. or vor/ILS but I have a good comm. (sl 40) and my KNS 80 is a great vor/ils /rnav. I would probably have gone for the 650 but Garmin did not have a special price on them and also, I feel there are advantages to having comm and vor/ILS radios separate from the GPS. Traffic, weather, and AHRS display on my Area 795 which is yoke mounted. I have a couple of glitches to work out but so far I am pleased. The traffic seems to be spot on. Photos are before / after.
  12. Hi Matt, Don't doubt what your radio guy says but I am having trouble understanding why an annunciator would be required. The 94 has the required annunciators built in and if the 94 is mounted at the top of the radio stack it is within the required distance of the attitude indicator. It was fully IFR approved in my J model without any external annunciator. And why would an annunciator be required to replace an 89 but not an 89b?
  13. This has now been removed and has a fresh 8130
  14. My insurance on my 81 J model renewed this month at same premium as last year.. USAIG
  15. Mystery solved. Radio shop power supply was not putting out 12 volts. Duh........
  16. My 81 J model is in the radio shop having a GTN and GTX 345 installed. They report that there is only 8 volts at the buss with 12 volts applied to the positive battery cable. The airplane will not start and the GTN will not run. They were using the aux. power plug during programing after the install and they say more power was being used than the GTN should have required. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?
  17. The FAA rebate reservation is available now. I just got mine. $500 is not a big incentive but my plane is in the shop for a GTX345r install anyway so it will be like found money.
  18. The FAA rebate reservation is available now. I just got mine. $500 is not a big incentive but my plane is in the shop for a GTX345r install anyway so it will be like found money.
  19. The KLN 94 has its own annunciators. If it is mounted within a certain distance from your attitude indicator (assuming typical 6 pack instrument arrangement) no additional annunciator is required. Mounted at the top of the left radio stack under the audio panel in my J model no additional annunciator is required or needed and it is fully IFR approved.
  20. Sorry, no I don't.. I will try to remember to take one and post it the next time I go to the airport.. It looks exactly like the old one except it is 3/4 inch shorter.
  21. Hi Matt, I'v heard that but probably best to check with a good radio guy to be sure. Jeff
  22. My KLN 94 is coming out in the next 10 days and is for sale. It is working well and has a good display. It is IFR approved for enroute, terminal and approach (non VNAV) use. It will come with the tray, connector, antenna, data card writer, manual, update cable (laptop to KLN 94) Also eight database updates and the clunker laptop that I keep at the hangar to update the database. If interested, I can email you additional photos and video of the radio in operation or you can come and see it demonstrated in my Mooney (San Antonio area) until Wednesday when I take to the radio shop. $1,795 plus shipping.
  23. Remove the baffle in front of the no. 1 cyl. (two machine screws).. Cut 3/4 inch off if it and reinstall.. Your problem is solved.. Had the same problem with my 81 J and after doing this my no. 1 went from hottest cyl. to second coolest.. Actually my mechananic made me a shorter one in literally 10 minutes at no charge.. This baffle is to keep no. 1 from running too cold-- makes no sense it it is too hot.. I don't know who originated this fix (not me) but it has been covered a lot on various threads and it seems to work.
  24. I agree with shortening the no. 1 baffle. It went from being the highest cht to the second lowest. On the no. 4 I bent the baffle up just enough so that it was not resting on the cyl. fins. It now runs the same cht as no. 3..
  25. hello Jack, Curious, who is doing your paint work?. I am beginning to think about since my 81 J model has original paint. I am at Bulverde 1t8 about 5 miles from All American and would enjoy discussing Mooneys and going to lunch at Fredericksburg or Llano to show you mine. It's going into the radio shop next week for a new gps and ADS-B installation.
