Alan Fox Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 If it makes any one feel better , I had almost 50 K or better in a B model I had for 4 years , I sold it for 34K , we do these things out of insanity......The only plus is I get to hear stories on occasion about my old plane , from the current owner...... My "Frankenstien" Mooney went to a fellow Mooneyspacer.... 1 Quote
1964-M20E Posted August 29, 2013 Report Posted August 29, 2013 Yes you will not get out what you put into it but the longer you keep it, the more you use it and enjoy it the less difference it makes. 1 Quote

Shadrach Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 FWIW, I went through this in 2010 with my 67 F but my crack was underneith on the middle bolt boss on the px side case half. Engine was ~880 SMOH. I removed the engine from the AC and then removed all accessories and hoses; I then drove it to Aero engines of Winchester where they dissassembled it and shiped the cases to Crank Case Services in OK. I dropped the engine in the early afternoon and the cases were crated and shipped by closing time that day. Cases were turned around in about 3 weeks IIRC, engine was assembled in another week. All parts were servicable save for the case issue, but I elected to have moderate cylinder work done (light hone, relap of the valves). I had the motor mount powder coated. When I got the engine back I reinstalled under the supervision of a local IA. I replaced all hoses and added fire sleeves to those that were naked from the factory. I also carefully went through all control linkages, cable and hose routing. It cost me ~$4100 all in, not including my labor which was about 48 hrs (but a lot of that time was spent perfecting things beyond what most shops would have considered "good enough". A local shop quoted me $3800 (shop rate $100hr IIRC) as they had just done an F with prop strike the previous month. At the end of the day a repair made the most sense The engine had a lot of life left in it. Factory New made no sense to us financially. Factory reman made no sense to us financially and had little to no value over a solid field OH in terms of reliability. Infact, keeping our original crank and cams was very important to us because we new where they cam from, how many hours were on them and that the metalurgy was solid (no AD 6 months down the road due to QC issues). We've been flying it for 2 years and at annual last month comps were 78, 78, 79, 80 (the highest we've ever seen). Not that those numbers tell us a great deal or that 78 vs 74 is significant. What it does tell us is that the reassembly went well and the engine is as happy as it's ever been. 1 Quote
