M20C Headrests

I wanted to have headrests on the front seats of my M20C and somebody in an upholstery shop told me that any headrest from an automobile would fit.  And shure enough I removed the rear seats headrests from my Toyota Fourunner, had the wife make a fabric cover and a shop embroider them with just the name for $45.  Checked with a local automobile junkyard and they had plenty of  Fourrunners to remove the headrests @$50/ea which I thought it was a bit pricey so for now I will use mine.  If one wants the Mooney logo most embroidery shops will set one up from your picture for about $100 plus the stitching (maybe $50-75)  This is the finished product:

That is awesome....Probably much cheaper than buying a authentic Mooney part.....good find!!

Just a note I posted on a previous link, not all auto headrests will fit, specifically toyota headrests fit the spacing in the seats perfectly, but not all are the same.  I picked up 4 - toyota 4 runner headrests from a salvage yard for $50 for all, as they are just a simple metal u-channel shape with a support piece and slip perfectly into a slotted piece of foam without a bunch of plastic frame pieces etc.  Airtex interiors built me 4 leather mooney headrests with foam for $50 a piece spacing matched perfectly and were velcro underneath to stay together.

So if I understand correctly, the hardware to hold the headrest is already in the seats, just hidden by the upholstery?

Great idea, will do it on mine too!

However, how are the headrest held in place. If i am not mistaken the open parts of the U (those that go into the seat body) must be attached to something inside the seat, or are they just held in place by the seat foam? The latter would seem a little flimsy to me.

As far as functionality...

I think it just might be friction between the metal pieces. I was hoping for a better more modern solution in my ’94 O1, it is low weight and functional...

The short seats of the ’65C could really be improved by adding height in any way possible (my experience).
