aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Hey guys I was wondering what engine instruments are required for flight? In my Mooney I have the strip guage that has Fuel Qty L&R, CYL TEMP, OIL PRESS, OIL TEMP, AMPS. I also have a Mooney EGT guage. My question is this....I am looking at E.I. Engine guages to replace the current ones and was wondering if it is Required to have the CYL TEMP and Mooney EGT guage. I have a JPI EDM 700 that does this. What temp is the CYL TEMP and EGT guage reading?? On the JPI it reads each CYL tem and each EGT.
Immelman Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Raymond... though they are not required by the FAR's for day VFR ("TOMATO FLAMES"), the CHT is probably a required instrument. You can check for sure by consulting the Mooney type certificate datasheet and looking for the M20F, and additional required equipment wil be listed. You can remove the original CHT if your JPI/EI (etc) replacement is certified as a 'primary' instrument. As I recall the older JPI monitors offered this for more $$ and the EDM-700 was called the EDM-701 in this case. I don't know if they offer this option for the newer 730.
rbridges Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 A – airspeed indicatorT – tachometer (for each engine)O – oil pressure gauge (for each engine using a pressure system)M – manifold pressure gauge (for each altitude engine)A – altimeterT – temperature gauge (for each liquid cooled engine)O – oil temperature gauge (for each air cooled engine)F – fuel gaugeL – landing gear position indicatorA – anti collision lights (for aircraft certified after March 11th 1996)M – magnetic compassE – ELTS – safety belts obviously, I cut and paste this, but these are supposed to be the required things for daytime vfr
aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 So potentially I would not need to replicate the one channel EGT and CHT guages? Would this change for IFR flight?
rbridges Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Generator or alternator Rate of turn indicator (turn coordinator or turn & bank indicator) Altimeter, sensitive (Kollsman window) Ball (inclinometer, the ‘level’ component of a turn coordinator or turn & bank indicator) Clock (digital display or sweep second hand) Attitude indicator Radios as required for navigation and communication Directional gyro or heading indicator
aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 From what I can find from the Type Certificate Data Sheet I dont see anything that references those gauges.....which is good for me potentially. http://67m20e.com/Mooney%20TCDS%202A3%20Rev%2052%20dtd%209DEC10.pdf

aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 I am looking at the individual E.I. gauges and all of them are direct replacements except fuel quantity unless you go with the glass panel display. I just don't want to put in a single channel EGT and CYL Temp guage if I dont have to. Saves space and money and to be honest is not needed (unless required by regulation) with having the JPI 700.
Cruiser Posted August 2, 2012 Report Posted August 2, 2012 Item 401. FAA approved airplane flight manual. Look in the manual. If there is a Limitations section check it for all required items. They are all necessary for flight. The JPI is not an approved substitute because the FAA requires a permanent and unchangeable max. limit for CHT. JPI makes these and they are hard coded at the factory for the required limits per the specific aircraft. In your case the EDM700 would be called an EDM701. Call JPI they may be able to modify your existing unit.
aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 Well its listed in the manual. Required for flight: Cyl Head Temp Gauge but the Mooney EGT gauge is not listed. So that would be one gauge I would not need to replace. So here is a question for you guys......what temperature does this gauge read seeing as how there are 4?

aerobat95 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Report Posted August 2, 2012 Well I have that currently in the EDM 700....looks like I need a EDM 711 for direct replacement...I will give a call to JPI tomorrow and see what options I have.
