Rick Junkin Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 I was doing some flight planning and noticed a number of NOTAMs for ADS-B outages in my area. Then I zoomed out and saw there are outages all over the country. Anyone know what’s going on? Some of the NOTAMs are for several months. They say “may not be available” so this may be periodic maintenance or testing, but they are all over.
hammdo Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 Been going on for a while. Not very ‘dependable’ if outages last as long as they note. VFR and non-radar areas - bad news - but still need to look outside, we did for years without it.. -Don
N201MKTurbo Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 I would take those with a grain of salt. It appears those are ADS-B station (tower) outages. The NOTAMs show the coverage area of that station. But, there is overlapping coverage from other stations that fill in those gaps.
toto Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 I’ve flown straight through a “may not be available” NOTAM area a bunch of times and I’ve never had a problem with ADS-B. I keep thinking it will happen sooner or later.
TangoTango Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 I've lost FIS-B updates for a bit while traversing one of these areas, and the weather data just got stale until I regained coverage. As stated above, it isn't the entirety of the NOTAM area, and it isn't every time. It's occasionally annoying, but so far it hasn't been so annoying that I've changed mission plans or paid for Starlink / XM.
