rgpilot Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 Have a 2004 Mooney Ovation DX 2. Lost all heading information. Where is the Magnetrometer located? No recent work done on airplane so no idea what happened.
KSMooniac Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 Likely in the left wing outboard from the landing gear bay. Should be in your parts catalog.
Fritz1 Posted November 5 Report Posted November 5 Screw panel outside left landing gear, think behind spar, typically Wheatstone bridge, you can measure resistance of each of the three arms, then trace the wiring to the DG

If you still have the King HSI, it's could be the KG102A remote gyro or maybe the KMT-112 magnetometer (flux detector) or maybe the KA-51 (a or b) Slaving accessory or even the KI-525A HSI. A shop will diagnose what it is in little time rather than just throwing parts at it. 1
Peter T Posted November 5 Report Posted November 5 I had this issue in my 93 J a few years ago . I disconnected the magnetometer, cleaned electrical connections and hooked it back up. No problems since. 1
Yetti Posted November 5 Report Posted November 5 First step is to reseat things. Several times. For Motoroloa radios we would just wack them with a hard hat.
rgpilot Posted November 11 Author Report Posted November 11 Problem detected. The Slave/Free switch not making good contact when set to slave. Deoxit seems to be the answer. Haven't touched this switch ever. I guess corrosion has set in.
Alan Maurer Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 I have a 2008 Ovation 2DX and magnetometer failed. Airplane has G1000 and AP would not work and had note on PFD that magnetometer had failed. New part from Garmin was one AU plus installation. Repair worked....back to normal. Understand device is out in left wing. Alan N913ND
