Piloto Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Interesting but not much different than looking at your GPS map for the closest runway or suitable place to land. In most instances you are out of range of a suitable runway and has to opt for a farm field, road, lake, beach or near a ship on the open oceans. José Quote
jlunseth Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 Looks like it is missing the one most important piece of information, and that is actual winds aloft. It could compute a nice, safe runway 15 miles away for you, but if you turn into a 75 knot headwind you are going to make about 10 knots in that direction, where if you turn the opposite way you could make an airport almost twice as far away from the one the unit would give you. NRST button plus situational awareness (particularly of the winds aloft) works really well. Plus a little help from ATC. That and being in the flight levels to start with, so you have alot of miles to work with. Quote
