On the last couple of flights, Flight Aware registered my flight and speed, but not elevation. What is that symptom an indication of?

Disclosure: No, I don't know exactly what equipment the Darter has. One problem at a time. :) :) I know it is the same as others I have seen in the white Nav light in the tail.

I will look for the book and any addendum when I get back to the airport later today.

thanks

The tail beacon receives the transponder squawks and retransmits the mode C altitude. you need to  verify that you have mode C turned on and that it is working. the easiest way is to call ATC and ask them.

As @N201MKTurbo said, just ask ATC to confirm your Mode C and ADS-B out if they're not busy.  And if you've been on any IFR flight plans or requested Flight Following, they would have told you if there was a problem.  Just because FlightAware doesn't see you, doesn't mean you really have a problem.

The other thing you can always do is request an ADS-B Performance Report from the FAA.  https://adsbperformance.faa.gov/PAPRRequest.aspx
