BrentS Posted June 25, 2023 Report Posted June 25, 2023 replacing the broken exhaust bracket springs. the parts manual has a picture but not any detail on the orientation of the springs to the eyebolt on the firewall. does the left side spring go on the left side of the eyebolt and right spring on the right side or do the springs cross - left spring to the right side and right spring to the left side or do both springs go on the same side of the eyebolt( either both on left or both on right). when installed left spring on left side and right spring on right there is a lot of preload on the springs - does the tail pipe need to be adjusted downward to give some slack if this is the correct method? thanks for any help with this 1966 M20E
jamesm Posted June 26, 2023 Report Posted June 26, 2023 the trick is if you put a rubber o-ring on bolt going through the spring portion that attaches to the firewall that last a long time. Or others have used a portion of side wall from a tire replacing the spring entirely but I believe that attaches differently to the tail pipe if I remember correctly. Hope this helps, James '67M20C
RLCarter Posted June 26, 2023 Report Posted June 26, 2023 I replaced mine when I first purchased it….. mine were one on each side of mount and was a test of my patience getting them installed with little to no preload
Igor_U Posted June 27, 2023 Report Posted June 27, 2023 I installed springs on each side of the eyebolt like your picture 2 and adjusted exhaust for minimum preload. My plane actually had no exhaust support springs installed when I bought it and I operated it like that for 15-16 years with no issues. I finally decided to installed it with new engine install and exhaust couple of years ago. it seems these springs create more trouble then are solution...
