Having just done a CAP checkride in a G1000 aircraft, reversion is what Garmin calls using the other screen for the data or combining the data into the primary screen if the MFD fails.

Again, I am looking at a right hand display for a pilot in the right seat.   The other option is a docking station for an AERA 760

I just got my Aera 760 mounted recently using a MyGoFlight swivel panel mount and adapter. I wish it didn’t stand as proud of the dash as it does, but since it swivels, it makes a great third screen, but I haven’t been able to fly with it yet to figure out what works best there. When I have a copilot, it will probably stay in traffic mode as that seems to be an enjoyable task for people up front.

Do you need the tc for the autopilot? Otherwise that’s the first thing I’d ditch.

An interesting point. (we really are a product of our experiences)

My thinking was backup if the gyros (in this case screens) topple. But as you point out there is no reason the standby can't be another Vac driven gyro.

Thanks.

Making this an IFR machine would be 1/2 years away and dependant of a few things, including that USD to back off a bit. It's killing me at the moment.

I apologise for the 'questions' guys. There are stages in life where there is time to spend manual reading and times where it's a challenge due work, kids and trying to restore a Mooney in insufficient time. My avionics installer will be all over this. I just was seeking some real world solutions. Anyway, he'll be here soon, so out of bed.

TCs were a standard of the industry back in the day…

Unfortunately, they quietly wear…

Once they wear, they work terribly in the bumps…

So bad, you can’t follow their flopping guidance….

Fortunately,  there are so many other low cost back-up instruments to select from…

For anyone using a TC as a back-up AI… check how well the TC works on bumpy days… and try to follow it.

Sorry Denis!
It’s my usual TC rant…

We lost a pilot in my neighborhood who went from above the clouds with a failed AI, and couldn’t successfully follow the TC when he needed to….  Aluminum shower was the result…

That's ok. Rant away. I've always been comfortable with limited panel and have used it successfully in the past. Mind you IFR flying has been my bread and butter for the last 33 years. But, this aircraft is not about me.

There are numerous failure points that could cause stress. Engine failure being the most obvious one.

I would have thought, particularly compared to a vac driven gyro, the failure rate of an electronic G5 would be very low. (I did have a mate loose 4 screens in a Global once but that's an other story)

But when and if this Mooney becomes IFR, I'll give the above some thought so all view points welcomed.

The bummer with the TCs… is the wear issue combined with bumps…

A pilot can verify it is working when the plane is new to him…. But, won’t see the issue until it is in the bumps…

Back-up AIs are so common now… and readily available pre-flown….

If you fly her in IMC.. Add a better back up plan than just the TC…. :)

My M20C had a small TnB that wagged like a happy dog…
