triple8s Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Does anyone remember the thread where someone brought up the scenario where you are single engine night time, maybe over water, and hear imaginary engine roughness? There was a catch word/phrase for it and for the life of me I cant remember what it was called. Mike Quote
Hank Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 "Auto-rough" kicks in everytime I come home from the Carolinas after dark . . . . . Eastern KY and southern WV are dark, crooked and vertical. Then there are the fog tendrils creeping into the valleys . . . . . . When it happened over the Everglades, it was actually Com2 tuned into ATIS with the volume turned way down. Quote
triple8s Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 THATS IT! BTW Hank, did you go to the Mooney gathering @ KGKT last year??? Quote
jlunseth Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Hey, I just went to the Bahamas in my aircraft right before annual and an engine teardown, and did not get the "automatic roughs" one single time. I was listening for it, but never happened. Good engine, dependable, I hope the rebuilder doesn't do something to screw it up. Quote

triple8s Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 I am just to the west at DKX. I arrived a bit late to the gathering but it was nice to see all the Mooneys there. I sometimes fly up to the north to LOZ because there is a resturant on the field there. The food is pretty good and in the summer you can set out on the patio, I love the eating trips. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 I had a PA38 Tomahawk I was taking to Florida and was just crossing the mouth of Mobile Bay going east when I had a particularly noticeable case of auto-rough. After about another mile over the water it was clear it was not auto-rough, it was the other kind! I did a Reno-style pylon 180 that would make Lyle Shelton proud and got it to Mobile downtown airport. The bottom plugs in that O-235-L2C were completely full of lead and the top ones were in bad shape too. Borrowed a socket and a couple wrenches, cleaned the plugs, and good to go. Quote
