GoWest Posted May 17, 2020 Report Posted May 17, 2020 I am considering purchasing a Piston Power scheduled engine maintenance program for a Mooney Ovation 2. Does anybody here have any experience with this program or know of someone who does? Quote
carusoam Posted May 17, 2020 Report Posted May 17, 2020 Welcome aboard, GW... Are you considering the Savvy system? Many people around here use part if not all of their offerings....some parts are free... Might not be the equivalent of AAA for your car... but kind of similar... Savvy does a great job of identifying what isn’t working on Mooney engines... and can be helpful if you have a challenge while away from home... MS has a member that is also a key person at Savvy.... very helpful when it comes to mechanical questions... There isn’t a lot to do outside of regular maintenance, oil changes and annuals... for a newish Mooney... The Best maintenance program for Mooney engines is to fly them often... The Mooney Service Centers are independent of the factory that built the planes... always available to Mooney owners with or without a contract in place... What type of engine maintenance program are you looking for? Go Mooney! Best regards, -a- Upon further review.... I saw this... https://pistonpower.com/mooney-announces-partnership-with-pistonpower/ Quote

carusoam Posted May 17, 2020 Report Posted May 17, 2020 Sounds more like a luxury item, or corporate expense item... Really helpful if that hourly maintenance expense can be used at your home drome... if your plane needs to go to another field each time you need an oil change... that would be unfavorable... MS has a few types of owners... Many are cost conscious as their personal dollars are in short supply compared to engine maintenance costs.... They fly using engine friendly settings at the cost of 10kts of speed.... There are some that fly in flaming dragon mode...often used as a business travel machine... Where a set of pistons is expected to be swapped out at the halfway point.... Read the limitations closely... to make sure you are or are not covered for the costs of flying in flaming dragon mode... maybe you get one set of cylinders in the program... (?) It really makes sense to consider the option as it has been detailed for use with new Mooneys... really makes sense to have a known maintenance program when you have 700amu tied up in a single travel machine... Probably makes less sense if it is a weekend only travel machine... Most people keep their engine OH fund working somewhere else... essentially, it sounds like you will be storing away about 40amu over time for an engine overhaul that you aren’t expected to use for another 2k hours... that’s a lot of money stored away for a long time working in somebody else’s investment account... See what gets pro-rated... if you are buying a used machine with 1900 hours on the engine already.... don’t expect to be getting something for free..... PP thoughts only... not a finance guy... When it comes to overhaul time, I don't want someone else pinching pennies on my behalf. I'll decide how to spend the budget and on what factors. To give you example, on my last overhaul on an O-320, I decided to go factory new cam and lifters even though I could have reground the cam and refinished the lifters. I did so because Lycomings are notoriously weak in that area, and a new part vs reground part has a better history to go with it when I sold, and for my peace of mind when I flew it. 2 Quote
