I just got this from the Mooney aviating e-mail list; if you can please help on this!!:

In a surprise eleventh-hour backroom move, the chairman of the House Transportation Committee has amended the current FAA reauthorization bill to remove air traffic control from the FAA and place it in the U.S. Department of Transportation, to be overseen by an airline-dominated board of directors. The House vote could happen as early as April 25.

While not "privatized," ATC would still be removed from the FAA, the only agency with the experience to run air traffic control. ATC would also be run by a new board whose interests would be focused on giving airlines ATC priority.

Call your Congressional Representative and demand they oppose moving ATC out of the FAA!

1. Dial toll-free: 833-GAVOICE (833-428-6423), weekdays from 9-5 Eastern.

2. You will be asked to input your zip code then transferred to your Representative's office.

3. Say: "I am opposed to the manager's amendment to HR 4 which moves air traffic control out of the FAA!"

If you do not call, and this bill passes Congress and is signed into law, ATC could be controlled by the airlines, and access by general aviation and skydiving could take a back seat.

Here's what EAA said...

Shuster backdoors ATC Privatization Amendment....here's what EAA Chairman asks us to do!

EAA Chairman Jack Pelton also responded quickly to the amendment, calling on EAA members Tuesday afternoon to contact their congressional representatives immediately, to oppose the plan. "This is a devious, backroom maneuver after public and congressional opinion showed to be solidly against ATC privatization and caused the withdrawal of the original bill," said Pelton. "This is reckless, punitive policymaking that circumvents any public input. We believe that was exactly the intent of this amendment at this time."

The provision would "set the stage for airline domination of the ATC system," EAA said. Aviation advocacy groups sent a letter on Tuesday to House leadership and members, urging them to drop Section 5 of Shuster's amendment to H.R. 4. The groups urged their members to contact their representatives immediately.

That 1-800-GA-Voice number makes it dead easy. Took me no more than 5 minutes to reach all 3 of mine and leave the message with staffers.

Get on the phone y'all!

Just got this from my EAA chapter...

I just received the following from Tom Charpentier, EAA Government and Relations Director:

"The good news is that we won this round. Late last night Shuster dropped the ATC reorganization language from his "manager's amendment." There are still opportunities for the language to crop up again, however, so we'll stay vigilant until this bill is finally done."
