In other news the DA50 is going into production... this to me looked like a compelling option.

I think what a lot of people want for a family is a 5 seater with good load...

Except the bulk of the cost isn't in the engine, and as we discussed here recently you can throttle an R back and be close to as efficient as a J... fuel efficiency won't beat Cirrus.

We need to stay faster, add chute, slick interior and more load. And retract. Imho

It's not the cost of the engine in $$$ it's the cost in weight, CG, fuel consumption, Useful load, payload. maintenance expence.  I think the Encore was about as close as Mooney came to building the penultimate Mooney.  In my opinion the medium bodies have the most balanced looking airframe, with a very versatile cabin. Good Economy even on the POH ROP settings. Think if they'd cleaned it up like the type S, mounted a light weight M&T prop on the front. Refined the cabin further... etc...etc.

Almost every reasonably fast piston single suffers from an inability to carry a reasonable load (though some do well, old A36s and C210s come to mind).  As Mooney became more refined, they became less and less capable load carriers. The F was about as good (800lbs in the cabin and the ability to go somewhere) as they got with load hauling...it was mostly downhill from there. It's entirely possible that a refined Encore could have been a 200kt+ airplane with 1200lb+ useful. Any bird that would take 900lbs of payload 700sm in 3hrs and burn less than 40gals of fuel doing it would be a marketing force to be reckoned with.  The TN A36s by TAT can do most all of the above but the fuel burn.
