I have a 64 E that I just had a new panel put in last March. Since then every time I fly and dial down my prop for cruise it vibrates back to full on its own. I don't want to take it back to avionics shop due to our strained relationship after my bill came. (long story) How do I tighten the friction on it? any help would be awesome.

Want to post a photo of the one you have?

They often get updated over the centuries.

look up McFarlane (sp?) for how to do that...

The quadrant friction lock on my C is large, maybe 2" diameter, on the right side of the quadrant cover. It adjusts friction on all three levers simultaneously. It's to the immediate right of the Flap switch in this photo (haven't figured out an iPad app similar to MS Paint yet, so I can't put an arrow in the photo). Turn it clockwise to tighten up (rotate the top towards the front, some people are challenged when not looking directly at things).

Hope this helps!

You might try loosening the cable retaining nut on the cabin side of the instrument panel, this will loosen the cable assembly in the panel.  Then advance the cable check nut on the front side of the instrument panel 1 full turn, then tighten the cable retaining nut again.

This usually increases the friction on the vernier shaft and should help stop the turning.

Greg - I had the same problem on my '66 E.  I have fixed it definitively by buying a new prop control.  However, for 3 years I had a very acceptable cheap solution.

I used a wooden clothes peg, which I clipped to the the shaft of the prop control.  It prevented the rpm from changing with vibration.  Before landing, I removed it and clipped it somewhere out of the way.

Here's a picture of my approved, PMA'd, RPM stabilisation system!

Oh, it's a prop knob. Try the clothespin while you wait to replace the cable. Just clip it on all the way forward.

I use a rubber band around the knob to the mixture control, produces the same effect...  Just replaced the throttle control after a malfunction.  Would have rather done the prop.  Might do it this coming annual.

Great pictures, gents!

The black knob is definitely the original.

The mixture knob is much different than my memory of the original. Possibly updated over the years.

Some of the old push/pull type knobs have a friction lock that ages with time.  The friction lock was adjustable by tightening the nut at the front of the panel.  I think that is a throttle cable thing.  The other knobs have the push buttons in the center that is supposed to be a lock/release.

See if you have a friction lock adjustment on the control... it may be too old to adjust.

PP type advice. Not a mechanic...
