I am having my motor overhauled by Western Skyways (a choice i really regret but more on this in a later post) and they recommend replacing the mounts for $2100. I am wondering if this is a fair price. Anyone have any experience with this replacement?

That's a reasonable 100% mark up over Spruce, where's the problem?

By Lord's application guide, since you have an MB engine you need three -76 mounts and one -75. At Spruce that comes up to just over $1600 plus labor. So $2100 isn't out of the question.

Thanks, I guess the only problem is I have already paid for the removal/installation of the motor and it now seems these guys are charging me for the labor again.

I'd really like to hear more about Western Skyways.  I don't need an overhaul, but I like to keep track of possible shops. Western Skyways has been on the list.

I bought my engine mounts at sky geek last month for a 1000 less than you are paying

Makes sense that you spent $1000 less since you have an E model and he has a K model.

According the the Lord Application Guide, an E model uses four of the J-7402-16 mounts at $114.75 each, for a total of $459.00.

The 252 K model uses one of the J-9613-75 ($445 each) and three of the J-9613-76 ($387 each), for a just over $1600.

Gyrene,

These rubber mounts usually are an option to get swapped out when getting an engine overhauled.

What made you miss that opportunity?  What makes you want to do it now?

What other options were on that list? What else should be swapped out while you are in there the second time?

Sounds like somebody may have been saving some small dollars by saying no to these options.

Best regards,

There is going to be additional labor involved if they install new mounts rather than just installing your overhauled engine on the old mounts. If your old mounts are 30 years old it seems like it's time to do it though while the engine is being overhauled. (I'm familiar with your 252 - I looked at it before you bought it.)

Maybe someone can chime in on how much labor is involved in removing four engine mounts and installing four new engine mounts. It sounds like they are charging you about 4-5 hours labor.

I am interested in the Western Skyways commentary as well. I have a fairly fresh Western Skyways TSIO360LB1 overhaul with about 220 hours now since major and no issues. I have heard good things prior to this first hand experience flying behind one but bought the plane right after the overhaul was done so I didn't deal with the shop first hand.

I'm confused, if your engine is out for overhaul there is no additional labour to install your old Lord mounts or new Lord mounts.  The only addition would be new mounts and new bolts.

Sounds close to what happened to me.  He asked at point of engine install, they did not do it, then  rather than make good on their error, charge extra after the fact.  Just speculating???
