M20BE Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 One thing that bothers me, is that all Mooneys have wet tanks. It concerns me because of post fire after a crash or something. Is this really a safety issue ? I feel that it's safer just to have the fuel in a seperate tank or am i incorrect ? Thanks Quote
TurboExec Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 what is the difference between say a wet wing and bladder? If the crash is enough to rip open the tank could it be enough to puncture a bladder? Even with a separate tank I think you are still looking at all the same problems.....so in short I think it is just as safe as any other method of storage. My $.02 Quote
M20BE Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 I would prefer the seperate aluminium tank like you have in the Cessnas. The worse is the Cirrus machine, you should look at NTSB how many of that plastic sh*t gets post fire crashes... Quote
TurboExec Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I don't think that is directly related to the gas tank....composites are flammable, the resin and all. Have you ever seen a composite boat burn, those go up real quick and are pretty intense. Quote
M20BE Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 Well they (cirrus) should for sure place a seperate tank. So there is no issue for you with the Mooney ? Where are they placing the long range tanks ? in the top section of the wings ? Is it with the same fuel selector ? Are they just interconnected ? Quote
TurboExec Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 They open up another compartment inside the wing... Quote
TurboExec Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 http://www.monroyaero.com/lrupgd.html There is their website.....if you want to read about the STC. I'd like to have it, but I'm not so sure about using the bathroom in the Mooney... Quote

KSMooniac Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Adam, I had to use a piddle-pack for the first time last week on my trip to CO. I bought a 2-pack of the ziploc style packs with some material to make the liquid turn to gel. I was in smooth air on top of an undercast, with the autopilot engaged. I moved the seat back, unbuckled, and kneeled on the seat while doing my business. It worked fine, although I just about overwhelmed the pack! I think I might save some big plastic bottles in the future and put some cat litter in the bottom, although it wil occupy more space than the bags. Quote

KSMooniac Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Yeah, that probably was! Not really a good way to discuss the topic though without the details. Quote
M20BE Posted October 22, 2008 Author Report Posted October 22, 2008 KSMooniac: i suggest you don't wait to long to use the gel packs, they usually work great!! Quote
mooniac227 Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 I thought this discussion was about the plane's wet tanks, not the pilot's... 1 Quote
Sandman993 Posted April 3, 2019 Report Posted April 3, 2019 Lots of gas onboard... chance of fire during a crash. no gas on board, high chance of crash, no fire pick one Quote
