romair Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 I removed the storm window to change the seal. In the process, I noticed just how old the plastic was...scratched, yellowed... Is there a way to bring it back to its original clarity and remove the scratches? There is one for automobile headlights so I'm sure there has to be something that can be done for our plastic windows.
bonal Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 The plastic used for aircraft windows is very soft where as automotive lamp covers is much harder I think most auto products would likely cause more damage than good. There are some aircraft (glass) products that might work check out Sportys and spruce.
Rwsavory Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 Micro-mesh. Sportys sells a kit for about $30.
N201MKTurbo Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 I think the automotive headlight polishing kits would be Ok. Just do them by hand and don't use any grit less then 1000. Micromesh works great. I use it to polish out headlights. I have grits up to 8000. I have been using the same micro mesh kit for 15 years and it still cuts. Just keep them clean and always use them wet.
ALP Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 I was searching same thing and found this, but I would practice on junk first. Ron Kilber's Logbook - Care and Repair of Acrylic Aircraft Windows
carusoam Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 It's only a few bucks to replace it. It is precision cut and easy to do. Just remember what color the old one is supposed to be. Clear, gray or green.... Let us know if you need a window manufacturer recommendation... Hold onto the hardware, it is a bit of a challenge to replace. Best regards, -a-
bonal Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 I'm in good shape righ now but great to see there is a way to restore when the time comes
carusoam Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 Nice video! Start with a side window. In the event it doesn't work as planned. Replacement will be plan B.... Best regards, -a-
