driller Posted June 12, 2014 Report Posted June 12, 2014 I have the Ovation and experience with a turbo Bonanza. For sure the turbo helps on climbs and is a useful tool with high DA takeoffs. But, the turbo doesn't do anything for the effects of DA on the prop and wing. It isn't magic. And as was said earlier, if you are at 60% of 310hp Ovation in you are pretty close to sea level take off in a 200hp J. But lose a turbo or cylinders and you have a different story. Personally, I think the turbo is unneeded added cost and risk. Nice plane. It's all about what you do and where you do it to determine whether it is a needed extra cost. Flying between 15 and 22 thou doing 210kts at 12.7 gal per hour over the weather is worth the cost and "risk"? Getting on top of the weather is most certainly worth it. Losing a cylinder in any plane will be a different story. It's all about your intended mission. I recently had an opportunity to get in on an O and turned it down because of where I enjoy flying. UP high. curt Quote
Robert C. Posted June 12, 2014 Report Posted June 12, 2014 Principally the lower glare shield when compared to a pre-2004 O2. The folks at Strategic Aircraft brought up a GX as well, but I'm note too sure about the WAAS upgrade path. I can see not really needing WAAS if you avoid hard IFR (which I would), but you still need a 2020 ADS-B solution. And besides, they are a fair bit more expensive Thanks Robert. I think I should have no problem selling it. Why the interest in the DX? I understand wanting a GX, but what does a DX get you? Quote
PMcClure Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 Thanks Robert. The DX is never really defined well. I thought you got the new glare shield and maybe 100 gallon tanks vs 89, but not sure on that. I would stay away from a GX unless you could upgrade to WAAS. Even if you don't need WAAS, It may be hard to resell. The upgrade to G1000 costs about $70-100k. I think there is a GX for sale now on controller without WAAS upgrade capability. I have faith the ADS-B solution will arrive in time! Good luck in your search. Quote
carusoam Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 O1 had 100 gal tanks in 94. At least the one I'm familiar with did. Best regards, -a- Quote
PMcClure Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 I think all Ovations actually have 100 gallon tanks. But am I correct that the O1 and O2 are limited to 89 useful by the silly filler neck? You can actually get 100 in the tanks. Later models upped to 100 by removal of the neck. Quote
carusoam Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Not on mine... That is more of an Eagle issue. The last three gallons takes some time. The actual number was slightly over 100, like 103? Now I'll check the POH.... Best regards, -a- Quote

Cruiser Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 The 310 HP STC increases the fuel capacity to 95 gallons/89 usable and increases the gross weight to 3368 lbs. However the maximum landing weight remains at 3200 lbs. creating a situation where you can take off but not land if you are carrying too much fuel. Quote
PMcClure Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 This is interesting. I have the 280hp version and my gross is 3368, same as the 310 version. I think the tanks are placarded at 44.5 gallons useable each. I have about a 2 inch filler neck that extends down into the tank. Line guys tell me that ovations come with a 4" neck, a 2" neck or no neck, giving 75, 89 or 102 gallons capacity. According to the supplement above, I am allowed to take up to 51 gallons. So - should I get new placards from Mooney? Quote
carusoam Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 Modify the neck to match the numbers.... Best regards, -a- Quote
Will W Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 I'd be a buyer if TKS was installed. I also seek a DX for the same reasons. Quote
