jasonwojo Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Hello all. I had a nice conversation with Jerry Manthey last week. If you are not aware of Jerry, he instructs the Mooney Maintenance Clinics for the Mooney Aircraft Pilots Association (MAPA). For many years, he has taught one-day spinner-to-tail classes for Mooney models ranging from M20Bs to current. He has been an A & P since 1949, an IA for the past 30 years, and has attended specific training with companies like Mooney, Continental, and Lycoming. He is a retired Air Force Flight Engineer (22 years) and a former Mooney owner with over 20,000 hours. Due to his young age of 78, Jerry has decided to retire from flying and teaching Mooneys. As you might have heard, 2010 will be his last year of Mooney Maintenance Clinics. My short talk showed me a man with an infinite amount of knowledge. Because of my desire to gain a piece of what he knows, I asked Jerry if we could have his very last class in Wichita, Kansas (the original home of Mooney). With MAPA coordination, he agreed and gave me the option of October 2-3 or October 16-17. This is a true opportunity for all midwest Mooneys! M20B - M20J classes are held on Saturday, and M20K - current classes are heald on Sunday. Classes are over 8 hours long (portion in the hanger with a real Mooney), include a class specific book about your Mooney, and comes with lunch. To make all of this possible, I will need atleast 20 people (pilots, mechanics, curious, etc.) to commit to this one-day class. Price is a very low $199.00. I would like to hear back from those who are interested, or have attended one of these classes in the past. Let me know the weekend that works best for you. Based on this information, I will choose a date and advertise it in MAPA's magazine (MAPA Log). Once we have a date, refundable payments can be made to MAPA. Exact location will be provided shortly. Share your thoughts on Mooneyspace and email me your contact info if you can attend (jasonwojo@msn.com). Please send this information to your non-Monneyspace friends. Lets learn more about our prized Mooneys and make this a memorable last class for Jerry. I look forward to hearing from you! Quote

KSMooniac Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Jason, been busy as usual. I just finished the low-profile gear door mod + brake reversal on my plane and am headed to TX this weekend for fun and then a trip to Maxwell's on Monday to address my twisted ailerons/rigging. After that, back to the paint shop for warranty work, so I may call on you for some ferry help if you're interested! I definitely want to do some formation work in preparation for my first Caravan, so having you around would be most excellent. I want to work through my power settings for the Caravan configuration. I'm composing an email right now for this class and will cc you. Quote
N9240M Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Jason, I attended Jerry's class two years ago and found it to be quite valuable. You take away a notebook of mx manual excerpts with some of the more common items that need to be addressed. I leave this notebook in the plane and I use it just about every time I open a toolbox near the plane. I'm somewhat considering upgrading to a K model so I would certainly be interested in learning a little bit about them beforehand. Scott Quote

The-sky-captain Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Jason- Will do, looking forward to it. There are a couple Mooneys based on my field and nearby so I'll spread the word. On a similiar note Vintage Mooney Group South Central is having a flyin at Longview, TX (GGG) on June 5th. This is Mooney mechanic Don Maxwell's home field and he will be hosting the event and talking a little about basic maint and fuel tanks. Here's the link to all that are interested http://www.vintagemooneygroup.com/VMGSouthCentral/PREGGG2010.htm Quote
