I am a new member to this forum and a new owner of a Mooney M20J.  There is an area on the wing where the radar is installed in the wing that is covered in a black paint or wing walk non-skid treatment.  We are not using the radar and will eventually have it removed.  The area can be seen in the edge of the attached picture.

In the meantime however, has anyone painted over the area instead of refacing it with new sheet metal?  If so how did it turn out?  Otherwise, has anyone re-treated the area with the ant-slip or wing walk material?  Thanks and I look forward to learning a tremendous amount form the forums.post-12041-0-32473500-1389385098_thumb.j

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I think it's pretty wild that someone equipped an M20J with radar.  They were serious about getting maximum utility out of the plane I suppose. I'll be curious what others have to say.

It was a factory option - made by RCA.  Most reports i have read on it say that it is hardly worth its weight as a paperweight.  If memory serves correctly, it weighs in at a cool 30lbs - hence the need to have it removed.  I just don't want to re-skin the area in sheet-metal if I can paint the area to match for now

It is likely and old Weather Scout and not worthy of any repair dollars. Never seen factory radar in a 201....lots of 231's never a 201. I am almost certain if you remove the radome from the wing, you'll have to replace with sheet metal.

I have one on my 231, which almost works, the tilt function seem to have gone the way of the ghost.  Mine has a plastic cover, not  the wing walk material, looks the same as yours.  I understand it would be expensive to have metal put back on the wing, I was quoted almost $5,000 to do so.  My POH gives the wieght as 55lbs.

I've never worked on one and I don't know if you can remove the R/T unit and leave the radome behind. If you could I can't imagine why anybody would give you grief for painting the radome with regular paint. Just to make the feds happy I would put a tag on the inside of the radome saying that is in-op.

It wouldn't hurt to call the local maintenance inspector and ask him for an opinion.

Old topic, but I'm in the same predicament.

My M20J has the old RCA radar in it. Apparently it still works, but i don't use it (yet) as I don't fly IFR at the moment...

Just came with the plane.

Curious to find out how it went @lsearcy ... any updates?

thanks!
