TWinter Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 Picked one of these up with some Christmas cash..I plan to use it in the hanger or mount it on the hat-shelf in the rear of the Mooney. Would be great to power portable things such a small 12v clip fans or the portable B-Kool units, recharge ipad, phones. Great way to not to have to rely on ships power all the time. I'll give a PIREP after a few times using it. I have always seen them..not sure I need one, but I'm a gadget guy. Quote
orionflt Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 $400 is a little pricey for a backup, I agree that it is nice to have something in emergency, but the built in batteries in my I pad and radio will last me that long if i lose ships power. something like that priced under a $100 i would consider purchasing just to have a portable charging station but even then i find there is very little need. I do like the idea of the light weight charging station and the solar powered charging station I think it would be neat to have a solar collector on top of the aircraft but until we are flying battery powered aircraft there is little need for it. I agree, US$ 400 is high... I would prefer to charge a portable powerpack for my ipad take it with me and use it in an emervgency. Quote
Hector Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 I think it would come in handy if you fly into Sun N Fun or Oshkosh and camp with the airplane. In fact, any camping situation even if not flying related. I was looking at it just for that. Looking forward to the PIREP . I was looking at a similar unit (Goal Zero Yeti 150) in amazon. Less expensive but lower capacity. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
TWinter Posted December 27, 2013 Author Report Posted December 27, 2013 Pricey...yes. That's why I used Christmas cash..LOL. I've been looking at them for a while and would not part with the money. Great for Osh, fly-ins or any outside event where a generator is not practical. I'll keep everyone posted.. It is very light! Quote
jrwilson Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 I got the goal zero lighthouse lantern for camping. It has a hand crank, and has a USB power port. It can be charged up and works as a portable battery pack. $30 at Costco. Not nearly as much capacity as as the aspect bar, but good for camping Quote
1964-M20E Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 I have a 7.5AH 12V lead acid gel cell used in emergency exit lights in buildings plugged into the accessory plug with a blocking diode to power portable GPS and Sky-radar devices. If ship losses power the battery backs them up. While the ship is running the battery is being charged. The voltmeter on the plane reads 13.8V the battery gets 13.1V due to the 0.7V drop across the diode. Whole setup with a little soldering costs under $50. Quote
