DrBill Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 The center "push to release" came out of my Ram air cable. It now moves freely back and forth manually. The mechanic says I need a new cable but he could not find one that would work with the RAM AIR light. Any ideas how to repair/replace this antique? BILL Quote
1964-M20E Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 Look at Aircraft Spruce. You can get a complete cable for about $70 and then just use the center cable and locking mechanism in your existing housing. http://www.aircraft-spruce.com/catalog/appages/a700.php Quote
DrBill Posted October 17, 2013 Author Report Posted October 17, 2013 John, The problem with my cable is the center locking system is toast. BILL Quote
garytex Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 My mechanic got McFarland to fabricate a ram air cable with a yoke on the end of it and retrofitted a piece of hardware for the control door arm to cease the wire breaking on the end of the control wire due to tightening the bugnut on the wire. Great piece of fabrication from McFarland, work fine lasta really long time, and they said they would save the measurements and etc for other Mooneys. Highly recommended replacement. Gary Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 All you need is to replace the 1/8 inch ball that fell out. Quote
DrBill Posted October 17, 2013 Author Report Posted October 17, 2013 Thanks Turbo, I'll take it apart next week and I have a supply of 1/8 ball bearings. BILL Quote
rockydoc Posted October 17, 2013 Report Posted October 17, 2013 I had the same problem. Just withdrew the cable out of the housing and soldered a new piece of ss fencing wire onto the end of the control end, put it back in, cut it to length and it works perfect. But, you have to have the 1/8" ball bearing which is what makes it lock in place. Simple deal really. Quote
1964-M20E Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Yes that was what I meant was to use the new inner cable and ball. I did it n my former E model. Quote
DrBill Posted January 26, 2014 Author Report Posted January 26, 2014 Thanks to N201MKTurbo I finally fixed this one and it's like NEW ! It was finally warm enough and I had time allocated to do the job. I removed the bolts from the oil cooler and moved it aside so I could access the bell crank from the opening. Loosed the nut and removed the cable from the clamp. From Inside, see pic 1 shows the center part and spring showing. Ball was missing. Pic 2, I pull back on the cable until the hole shows (close to panel in picture). Drop in a new 1/8 in ball. Had to push in on center for ball to drop in and I could push cable back into housing. Now, re-attach cable to bell crank, adjust for proper operation and re-install the oil cooler. I have 99 more balls if anyone needs one. I bought 100 from McMaster-Carr for $2.09 !! This now works so smooth. Pic 2: Pic 1: Bill 1 Quote
CWM20f Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Hi guys, New to the mooney community and ownership. Had a musketeer for 21 year and got a new to me f model last July and all I can say is what a blast so far!!! Getting lots of great info here - thanks to all of you. My problem is the ram air inner cable is fine but the outer cable shield is toast. Will the one from aircraft spruce listed above work for me if u use my existing inner cable? Chuck Quote
DrBill Posted January 28, 2014 Author Report Posted January 28, 2014 Without taking the cabin end apart, I can't say it would work since the switch for the warning light is built into the cabin end. You can always return the cable if it does not work out for you but don't open it until you remove the cabin end and see how the switch assembly is connected to the cable shield. Take some pics if you can. BILL Quote
scottfromiowa Posted January 29, 2014 Report Posted January 29, 2014 Hey guys, just curious. How many hours when your cables started failing? Quote
DrBill Posted February 9, 2014 Author Report Posted February 9, 2014 My cable failed when the mechanic messed it up taking the cowling off(lost the ball in the latch mechanism). I don't think he even realized he did it but it's fixed now and should last a LONG time. BILL Quote
