Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 & No Mooney in Menu
coinneach replied to brndiar's topic in General Mooney Talk
I have 62 hours logged (probably closer to 80 actual, but logging is broken) in MSFS2020, mostly in the steam Skyhawk. Is it pretty? Absolutely. Is it also horribly unreliable, inaccurate, and lacking in authenticity? Also absolutely. Asobo appears to have not involved any actual aviators in development and QA. -
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 & No Mooney in Menu

Carenado provides a M20R for MSFS2020 - at additional cost of course: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/mooney-m20r-ovation-review-msfs-2020-by-carenado/280118 Although I have MSFS202 (the graphics are stunning)installed I have not installed at test-flighted it. As flight simulator I still prefer X-Plane 11.50. IMHO its flight model is still much more realistic.. Several (at least three) M20 models are available as add-on for XP. As a real work M20R GX2 pilot I personally prefer this M20 Collection : https://www.x-aviation.com/catalog/product_info.php/m20-collection-p-162 Still waiting for the RealSimGear G1000 suite to be finally delivered to Europe... I tend to fly the Diamond DA62 or the Bonanza but every so often i'll pull out the non g1000 172, really wish there was a Mooney 8). realism is on high, graphics are mostly high but i only run at a 2560 x 1440 resolution. Framerates tend to run between 20 and 35 fps. Hoping to build a new rig soon, would really like 2560x1440 at a consistent 40 or 50 fps What also really helped, I hacked together some software which allows the msfs2020 to work with Garmin Pilot, allowing me to simulate most of what happens in the real plane.

Survived the weekend without Birdie by fling kdwh-kord-kind-kdtw-cycz-kiag-kpwm-kbos-kjfk in MSFS2020. Not even a pale substitute but man it has potentional. Hope the MS team continues to flesh it out.

I unloaded some stress on a teenager today... He mentioned interest in flying... within a few minutes we were searching for the latest news and pricing for MSFS2020... Hmmmm... I was just a teen when somebody did that for me... Coming soon... just weeks away... less than 0.1amu... Talking aviation... Is so much less stress than typing aviation... looking forward to talking Mooney aviation at a higher level.... My wife pulled up a picture from the internet... and explained the warthog was not my plane... Best regards, -a-

Welcome aboard AWN... You can get... 1) lots of practice... 2) lots of knowledge... 3) lots of learning... 4) lots of money saved... 5) Find the search button... look up MSFS.... around here... this will give some insight of how actual Mooney pilots use some low cost simulators... MSFS2020 is just about to be released.... 6) Search some more... you will find some actual simulators that aren’t very low cost at all... In the end... the more you know about flying in the simulated world the faster you can progress through flying in the real world... Simulation training is great when you have a plethora of time, or are short on cash.... or both... There is no substitute for the real thing.... How you will know... do all the requirements using a simulator... you will know the requirements better... you will know procedures better... you will know failures better... you will know radio calls better... you will have better questions to ask... you will be a better student... Expect that you can learn some bad habits equally well... Expect that you can’t learn the feel of the brakes from a keyboard... Doing all this is technically extra work... You may save plenty by not having to repeat lessons that often occurs when spacing lessons out over time for budgetary reasons... Use the simulator to support your actual/real flying lessons... Find a good flight instructor that you really get along with... Your preparation using a sim may be really obvious... This could be a good thing... PP thoughts only, not a CFI... Best regards, -a-

Early last year I upgraded my 12-year old home-built PC to an HP Omen Obelisk with a few tweaks - got the Intel i7-8700 CPU and the Nvidia RTX-2080. The GPU alone cost 1 AMU, but it's well worth it. The whole setup, computer + Oculus VR + 4K monitor + rudder pedals/Yoke/throttle quadrant from Saitek cost me around $2.5k. I can easily play Xplane 11 with all setting on maximum, in 4K, with a 30-60 fps rate (clouds and fancy airports will slow it down a bit). I can also play it in VR (which is my default unless I'm actually practicing approaches/instrument stuff), but have to dial down reflections and some of the graphic detail, but the effect is still outstanding. It's good enough to trick your brain into actually "feeling" the turns - and crashing will raise your heart rate quite a bit. The only thing i'm thinking of changing for MSFS2020 is adding more RAM. I only have 16GB (DDR4), and am thinking I could probably benefit from double that amount. My entire life I always built my own PCs, but nowadays you can actually buy a branded PC, like an HP, and customize it enough that you get all the parts you want, for cheaper than building it yourself, next-day delivery, and warranty/tech support to boot.

A search of MSFS2020 nets their latest release schedule... Seems to be delivered through their Xbox part of the site... https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/07/13/microsoft-flight-simulator-launch-date-announcement/ August 18 seems to be the day... The CSR22 costs extra... Best regards, -a-
