  1. I bought my '78 J 2 days before I got my PPL (wish I could have waited 2 days, but that's the way it worked out.) I got a few companies to look at it and Falcon and Traverse were the only 2 who even found somebody willing to insure it. $2300 w/ 60h, 8h complex time, and 2 days short of a checkride. They requeired 25h with CFI, 10 under the hood. Hopefully my options will open up and it will go down this next year.
  2. Got a link to the app, or what is it called?
  3. I still have no idea what my TAS is other than the guage on the panel, but I am LOVING this plane. It handles like a dream. The complex requirement of 25h for my insurance is coming along great. Flew up to KAVL and grabbed dinner and back last night.
  4. Isn't this going to give me a true GS eliminating wind, but not TAS. I thought the formula for TAS accounted for temp and altitude? I'm learning here.
  5. Don't crucify me yet. All I have to go on for now is the TAS indicator built into the ASI. What's going to be my most accurate way to test my numbers reported on the guage? She is loaded with just about every speed mod you can think of (it was that way when I purchased.) I can verify GS with the Garmin 430. I'm hoping to go up for an hour or 2 tomorrow morning and I'll see what we can do.
  6. Finally got most of the bugs worked out. With Lopreti cowl, power flow, all the gap seals, we had a TAS of 167kts in cruise on 10.5gph and very little wind at 6500'. We were on flight following, but for some reason did not show up on flight aware.
  7. Thanks guys. 14" should be about perfect. It will allow me to slow down without getting beeped at, but remind me when I actually start pulling the power out to land.
  8. Black leather in Alabama? Are you crazy?
  9. I flew my new 201J today and every time we got below 16" MP the gear warning horn goes off. Is this normal? It seems like it should be a slightly lower MP to trigger it.
  10. Protien bars lead to the need for a pit stop for me. 5hr without a break sounds excrutiating to me.
  11. I'm partial to the Lopresti Cowel. see my avatar
  12. Looking for a portable intercom to get me through until I put in a new audio panel. (Preferably ps engineering aerocom iii.)
  13. I thought that's why they made an auto pilot?
  14. I honestly don't know what she cruises at. I've been too busy getting my license, I have not flown her other than a test flight. The mechanic doing the pre-buy flew it a few times. And yes, I am a pediatric dentist outside of Birmingham, AL.
  15. I closed on a new to me M20J a few weeks ago and got my PPL this weekend. I need to do 25h (10 under the hood) with an insturctor before I can be off into the wild blue. She's in excellent condition other than nearing TBO. Decent panel with g430W and AP.
  16. I have less hours than you, so I'm definitely not piling it on, but for the sake of learning, how did you get above the cloud layer to start with?
  17. $990/mo for 500 members is $495k/mo revenue. They say in the article their operating expenses are $700k/mo. The nu7mbers don't add up. Fuzzy math.
  18. Got it. I thought if they could get it cheaper, they would take care of moving it. Learned something new.
  19. Is this not something your insurance company is dealing with?
  20. We were coming back into our home field a few weeks ago and heard "blow up" among some static and broken English on a stuck mic. Everybody got really quiet, then ATC asked "did anybody else hear what I think I heard?"
  21. So I'm about to finish up my PPL this month with about 55h. I have a contract on an m20J that hopefully will go through as expected. I need 25h in it with a cfi before I can solo in it. This is completely understandable, but they are so fast it will take some effort to get the hours. I'm going to have to pull it back to 50% power to build hours instead of just getting somewhere quick. I see a lot of shrimp runs to the coast in the next few months. I hope my cfi likes seafood.
  22. We settled on $58k. it's getting a thorough pre-buy next week.
  23. I was not really looking, this one just found me. It needs to be a great deal for me to lay out that kind of cash so close to tbo.
  24. Found a 201 sitting in a hangar for what I think is a good deal. 1977 M20J. 1900TT/Engine; G430W; hsi; kfc200 ap; 400h top oh; 8/10 paint and int. with good looking paint scheme.; upper 70's compressions. $65k
