Doing the first annual now... wowza!!
TWinter replied to Guitarmaster's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
As I see 73/74/75 models I'm surprised at the mix and match of the different parts or options. We all know that's the time frame when things changed for Mooney, but I'm amazed at the different variations of options. They should have called those eras "Special Edition" Mooney. I'm assuming Mooney was doing what they could to be cost conservative and still build certified planes. Kind " What have we got in that parts bin", so we don't have to spend more money..I love how my "73 or 74 E" depending on what paperwork you are looking at is configured, but you really do wonder what the real thought process was at that time to have such variation. All I would have wanted other than what I have now is electric trim. I like my electric gear and flaps. Maybe if it been built the day before I would have had electric trim probably ran out on my assembly day..darn it! -

Just got back from the shop..After some price haggling and jack jawing I convinced him to cut some fat off the labor price. Flightstream 210 will be going in. I can learn to like the Garmin Pilot App. At least if I do it now they won't have to pull the 750 if I decided I wanted it later. Promise not to post another change in plans.. Next post will be a PIREP on the GDL-88 and FS210, possibly a copy of my bankruptcy notice.

@ teejayevans: Not many advantages of living in a small town, but a few. Like a avionics shop 15 miles away that typically runs a six week wait for work. I've been waiting for my GDL-88 install since early December. I'm going over to the shop later in the day and want to look at the FS210. I really like the concept, but I also really like ForeFlight on my mini on the yoke. With the 210 I'm forced to use Garmins Pilot App. I know there is always the option of swapping apps while flying, but from a utilitarian point of view and my type of flying I just don't know if it is worth the $1400 extra.. I know I've posted back and forth, getting the 210 installed and then not getting the 210. My New Years 2015 resolution was to be more practical with my flying budget..I've not been doing very well. First they are installing the Lasar Cowl Enclosure, then they will pull it apart for the GDL-88. I figure that will be on day 2, so I have today to decide on the FStream. The shop owner said he would send the FS210 back if I opted to pass and just go GDL-88. No big deal to send it back. I've just committed to a week long aerobatic course for late May that requires a heavy deposit to hold my training week..so the checkbook is getting thin. Priorities and decisions

Dropped my plane off yesterday for the install of the GDL-88 and FS210. They called this morning and are getting started. Anxious to give a PIREP and check it out for myself. Should be done in 2-3 days.

I've been emailing w/ Greg. Seems like a great guy and program. So great that we have pretty much narrowed a week down for his full package. We will firm details, but this is something that I have wanted to do for quite a while. Hope to be great training and an awesome experience. I'll keep the updates coming.

Thanks for all the tips and referrals. I've thought about this for a long time and just have not had my ducks lined up business wise, so maybe this will be the year I can get a chance to go for it. I think it would be fantastic training and as Dave said a possible new addiction.

I'll check him out..I saw his website and videos. Thanks. Did not know about the BB. That would workout great.

WingOver Aerobatics in Leesburg, FL was one I just did some reading on.

I've always been a huge fan of aerobatics. I've searched the web and have found a few schools in Florida, Texas, Arizona and So. Cal that offer courses in aerobatics. Typically they seem to be about a week or so long and range $3k-5k. I'm not really looking at it from a endorsement standpoint (it would be okay to get a tail-wheel sign-off though) , quite honestly I think it would be a great experience and just maybe make me a better pilot. It would be a cool vacation experience if it was at the right location. Does anyone know, recommend or have any personal experience with one of these type schools? I'm in Tennessee (near Memphis). In realistic terms closer would be better, but one of the Florida schools would not be out of the question. Thanks, Tom

Misc Avionics for sale..updated list. Reduced before EBay
TWinter replied to TWinter's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
It does not come with it. I'll send some pre-cut coax cable with ends ready. I never got around to using it with the external antenna. I purchased the cable with the intent to and never got a chance. The TSO antennas can be found on EBay cheap or even a new one can be found fairly cheap..Just depending on whether you want the TSO version or brand B. -
Plane goes in the shop Monday for GDL-88 install. I need to create a "GDL-88 Fund'. For sale is the following: All posted on EBay GARMIN GDL-39 3D no battery version, but with accessories and original new box. ZAON XRX with case, cords and manuals SKYGUARD TWX ADS-B VISION-PRO This is portable in/out ADSB. MONROY 300 TRAFFIC+ WATCH BENDIX KING av8or w/ all accessories BOSE A20 HEADSET Non-BT GARMIN AERA 796 XM/WX Excellent Condition with a few extra mounts I also have the power cord to interface the XRX to the Aera 796. Displays traffic on 796 This will also power a GDL-39. So really you get all three off of one source. I have another cord for the 696. It will power the XRX and data from the Zaon XRX. More to post later. My email is : tpwinter@bellsouth.net

Okay, Confirmed with the shop and it's a done deal. He is ordering the FlightStream today. The GDL-88 arrived by UPS while I was there. I drop it off at the shop Monday. Having the GDL-88D, FlightStream 210 and having the Lasar Lower Cowl Enclosure installed. Should all be installed and out the door for $8500 (not including the price of the cowl enclosure). Anxious to get it done. Should be about 3-4 day install for all of it.
-
Thanks Don, That gives me a better idea of pros/cons. For the $1000 difference in addition to the fact they will already have everything apart to put the GDL-88 in I'll probably go ahead and step up to the plate and do the 210. I'm stopping by my avionics shop in the morning to make sure we are still on schedule for Monday, I'm really looking forward to the install. Thanks again for the input guys. You've just help me drop another grand. I need to stay off MS, much healthier for my checkbook. We always like to help spend each others $ don't we .

Bob, I understand on the 750 and GDL-88 being able to single out one or the other (traffic, weather and overlay), If I have the IPad mini running the Pilot App using Flight Stream 210 and I change my GTN750 to zoom in on the approaching traffic will the Ipad continue it's current route display or is it going to automatically mirror over to the same zoomed traffic screen or whatever I change the display to on the 750. I guess I'm asking can the IPad and the GTN750 show different pages as long as it is in the Garmin format because it is streaming from the 210. Can I show traffic or weather based off the data being gathered from the GDL-88 on the IPad using the Flight Stream and the 750 remain on the moving map page?
-
I'm about to have the GDL-88 installed next week. I am going back and forth over the Flight Stream 210. I've looked and have not really found a answer to what is probably a very simple question. While using Flight Stream 210 w/ a GTN-750, can you change the display on the Garmin Pilot App or the GTN. Say I wanted to continue to display my flight plan on the IPad and wanted to look at just the traffic or weather page in the 750. As long as you play in the Garmin sandbox can I move within the app or GTN750...or are they really just mirroring the display from one to the other. For a heavy IFR guy I can understand how being able to change the FP on the go or pre-loading the plans at home the 210 would be very useful, but being the CB that I am and flying as a VFR guy am I really just mirroring the same info on my GTN750 and wasting $1000 on the FS210 ? Thanks, Tom Winter

Sounds good.. LED lighting, not super expensive and big bang for the buck? Probably should check your gallery first, but assuming no LED yet its a good mod without breaking the bank.

I have a 750 and am scheduled for a GDL-88 install next week...still on the fence about the Flightstream. Main reason I really like Foreflight on my mini in addition to the 750 .. I fly VFR and am not in a huge hurry for my IFR ticket so. While Flightstream is very cool and allows to upload and then duplicates what my 750 shows I'm not so sure I'll reap all the benefits of it right now for the 1k cost. As I understand it I would just be getting another big screen of what my 750 is displaying since you have to use the Garmin Pilot App. Somebody please correct me if I'm understanding the Flightstream wrong. Your GDL 88 installed scenario at $4K looks slightly low, I need to double check on my price quote. I was quoted $6K for GDL-88 install with top and bottom antenna and I aleady have the 750 and remote transponder? Maruader's prices look right on par for the 650 and 750. I think if you can swing a GTN650 with GDL-88 that's the best bet. There are lots of flavors out there for the "in" and "out" as separate players, but I would go for the 650 for simplicity and screen management and then finish the puzzle from there. I have my 750 for about a year and put off the GDL88 until the checkbook fattened up a bit to finish with the GDL-88. All hypothetical of course

Some mentioned how we get this crazy adiction to spending on new avionics and approval of our spouses using the community checkbook..., "But honey, the GDL-88 will make our flying much safer..it's much more accurate than what we have now and I will save $65 per month on my XM". I always play the "safety card and we will save a few bucks". This usually this gets the okay, if not I do it anyway and hope she will get over it. A man once asked, your plane or your significant other? I said, "Do I have to decide right now, my Mooney was made in limited numbers, but on the other hand my easy going spouse is actually less upgrade and maintenance costs".. lol

Hey Tanker Mike, Just a few teaser pics will go a long way to get her on the market. Welcome to the forum. The three Ws come to mind. Who, where and what? Good luck

Finally my first 2015 short trip along the Mississippi River toward Sikeston for some T/Gs. Our first real good day to fly in TN since the 1st. Not as pretty as some of you coastal guys..but for us landlocked it will do for a short trip. My Mooney sure does like cool weather..great ground speeds today Now, forecasts are more rain, sleet and low ceilings for the next three days starting tonight. She is scheduled to go under the knife for a GDL-88 and cowl enclosure install the following week, probably be beautiful that week. Oh well at least I'll have the GDL to look forward to.
-
I have a habit of pre-mature...well never mind. lol. I typed the list, but wanted to wait and see what I had left after the GDL-88 install. If I wait I can give the best prices. Tried to delete the starter thread, but was busy at work and it was easier to just say I'll repost later. Mostly portable stuff and a few other things a "Gadget Guy" collects over a few years that comes out after GDL-88 install. Sorry to get you hot and worked up . Tom

Prop shops in the midwest?
TWinter replied to Guitarmaster's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Cody Stallings is located in Missouri I think and works for a good prop shop. He is a member here on the forum.
