  1. The absolute value of EGTs means very little. Vintage Mooneys were equipped with a single EGT probe. The scale on the meter was in 25 deg increments but there were no temperatures. The point was to lean to peak, set the mark needle there, and move the mixture back in to the desired ROP mixture. (In those days LOP was not discussed but in order to find peak you had to lean until the EGT started down.) Google Mike Busch EGT. Several informative links will appear.
  2. Sure wish Mike would check in or post on his share page.
  3. Note the hangar elves reference. Kinda like the aviation department of Harbor Freight.
  4. Okay. But that's not helpful. Perhaps someone knows the answer to my question. (I love AAPL stock but I've never owned any of their products.)
  5. I now have a FS 510 in my GTN 750 and my Android tablet is playing nice with the GTN. I see traffic on the tablet and can upload flight plans from the tablet. GPilot just upgraded to ver. 5.5.0 yesterday but I don't see W&B yet. Is there a pattern for how much lag Garmin usually has from new features on IPad to Android?
  6. 916008-009 Mooney probably through a MSC
  7. +1 for AQC who o'hauled my RCA22-7 AI in July for $396 - this includes making it pretty. (plus $112. shipping and R&R.) I briefly considered switching to an electric b.u. but this is a back up unit behind an Aspen and there are better ways to spend money.
  8. I'll ask my A&P about what my plane sounds like re other Mooneys here. We have an F and several Js...
  9. Noise? What's the beef with PFS? I've had PFS for almost 5 years, don't think I've heard about noise...
  10. You have a source for that claim? Ms. Google does not think so... https://www.lifewire.com/dangers-of-exploding-car-battery-534782 Touching that pin is the equivalent of touching the battery terminal which is what I did the afternoon with a 1/2" wrench to attach the cable.
  11. After talking to Lee Layton whose J model has external power I'm thinking I don't need the solenoid. If I'm concerned about the POS pin getting shorted I'll use a dummy plug of rubber or similar to insulate it when not in use.
  12. Can't see needing a b. box. Might be able to get a salvage cover with the receptacle etc mounted.
  13. Jerry, I have the cable and plug. What I need is the receptacle, bracket and components that go on the top of the battery box... and the hinged access cover. A salvage replacement battery box cover with the receptacle etc already mounted would be great. I'll check dim. of my battery box...
  14. I think we can use existing cover, add bracket, solenoid, etc.
  15. Exactly. See my note above referencing Parts Manual.
  16. Thanks. My old E is 12V. DMax, of course, pointed me to the easiest solution. Mooney parts manual: Man 226, The M20J - Illustrated Parts Catalog, pages 260-264 shows all the components we'll need. Don gets 4 items from Mooney - the access door cover, the bracket for the receptacle, a diode, and a solenoid cover. He gets the receptacle from Spruce... etc.
  17. Yeah, but 06Q is a '67.
  18. That's an unusual M20F. I should have had 3 windows per side! Like Buddy's whose tail # matches the model and year. And the step used to retract...
  19. It is a lot easier to imagine a weak battery out of town, perhaps after a day or two parked outside in New England in freezing weather than at home in my hangar with and engine heater and a battery charger handy. And conveniently playing with the GTN, Aspen, EDM while in the hangar on external power is very appealing.
  20. I've noticed that battery boxes take a lot of abuse in 50 years. The lid looks a lot rougher than the bracket, etc. But I appreciate Chuck posting the pic so please don't mock his beautiful 201!
  21. As I pointed out to the C guy Hank, I don't think E models have batteries mounted on the firewall as the C models which do. I suppose the heavier IO360 was the reason the battery was moved to the back but I don't know that.
  22. DMax advises that Mooney does have a kit for adding an external power receptacle. It isn't listed under retrofit kits on their website. He says it's "pricey" but he will get me more info.
  23. I have the lights from Spruce in my '66E. I think I recall that they came in 2 sizes... but I could be wrong.
  24. Sounds like it would work best for two functions: jump start, provide aux power to run avionics. I wonder If the latter is safe since the avionics shop has elaborate (expensive) aux power units which they hook up to work on avionics. There must be other issues and concerns re protecting sensitive electronics.
