  1. Last November, on an Angel Flight mission, just 20 minutes after leaving my home base (6G1), approximately 7 miles from YNG VOR, I noticed a film of oil on my windshield, I immediately requested to land at KYNG, we were in IMC so they gave me vectors for the ILS32 approach, very quickly my forward visibility was almost zero and we briefly had smoke in the cockpit so I declared an emergency. Within fifteen minutes or so we were safely landed. My forward visibility was so poor I had to use my side windows to land and taxi. Needless to say it was a wonderful sight to break out of the clouds and see 9000' of runway at my 12 o'clock, my AF passenger was great, he didn't utter one word until we were landed.A maintenance crew from Winner Aviation (FBO) found a cracked flair fitting on the prop governor oil line (it was barely visible with the naked eye). In the 15 minutes it took to land the plane the engine lost four of its eight quarts of oil. No damage was done to the engine. Previously posted
  2. Several month ago our KT 76A started giving us problems, our avionics shop told us that that model is still worth repairing and recommended I have Bevan-Rabell from Wichita, Kansas take a look at it. The switchdeck was going bad so they replaced it with a used one that had a good photocell. They also replaced some other parts, ran hot/cold tests etc. total invoice was $525. I wouldn't want to spend much more than that on an older transponder but all things considered I'm happy.
  3. I used Gleim for my PPL and King for my IR, I put my heart into it, studied hard and passed both easily. I must admit that I memorized some of the answers rather then spent time learning the concepts on several of the topics.
  4. Thanks Brett for sharing this post, last August my instructor/friend Dale Stearns and his IFR student were killed in a night IFR training session, flying for me hasn't been the same since. (Dale was my instructor from introductory flight to IFR checkride and beyond) We can beat ourselves up over the "should haves" and "what ifs" but learning from these happenings are what we need to focus on.
  5. I recently upgraded to the iPad "3" after using the iPad 1 for several years, from what I'm experiencing battery life in the new iPad isn't any better perhaps a little worse then the old iPad. It's processor is noticeably faster running Foreflight but the old one did just fine. Make sure you clear all to unused apps that are running in the background.
  6. The ram yoke mount works quite well for me, it does block the lower part of the DG a little but I never even thought of it until I took the photo. It's also in the way a little when writing clearences etc. (I use an aluminum folding lap desk.)
  7. On our M20F the OEM probe is up by the filter (see photo) and the EI probe is on the bottom of the oil sump.
  8. I use 400 as max for climb and 375 as max for cruise but here's a quote from Lycoming's Operator's Manual for the 360 series engine that has me wondering "For maximum service life, cylinder head tempertures should be maintained below 435 degrees F during high performance cruise operation and below 400 degrees F for economy cruise powers."
  9. We're 34 hours into a top overhaul. The first 15 hours or so our oil temps were top of green and getting close to redline during climbouts. They are green to top of green now (170-200). I was suspicious about the accuracy of the gauge so I decided to install a oil temp probe for our EI engine analyzer. When I was researching this I discovered there was a probe installed and we never knew it. (imagine that, over 400 hours in the plane and didn’t know maybe if I look hard enough I might find a second engine) When comparing the two, the factory gauge seems to be reading a little high. Very top of green is 200-205 on the digital gauge.
  10. My wife and I have six children (ages 25-10) and two grandchildren. All of our children enjoy flying (our oldest son is also a pilot but family and finances have kept him grounded the last several years.) My wife flies when it's needed but doesn't enjoy it. Most of my flying is business related or Angel Flight missions. I have a 50% owner in the plane and hanger which makes it possible for me to do what I do.
  11. I would hesitate to use low power setting below 25 hours SMOH unless oil consumption has stablized etc. http://www.lycoming.com/support/tips-advice/key-reprints/pdfs/Key%20Operations.pdf
  12. I have the Ram yoke mount, with universal holder, it works good. One thing to consider when buying mounts/kneeboards/cases is cooling, on my last trip (April) I had my iPad 3 overheat and shut down briefly (1-2 minutes) about three hours into the flight, it was cool (upper 30s) so I had cabin heat on, but the sun was shining directly on the iPad and it got quite warm. To cool it off I removed the Apple smart cover, opened the pilots side vent and adjusted my visor so the ipad was shaded, it cooled off quickly. I flew a lot of trips with my iPad 1 and never had it overheat, it seem like the iPad 3 runs hotter then the iPad 1 but the processor is faster.
  13. Thanks Mike, I'll have my mechanic check them out. Which reminds me, a number of years ago during a test flight (after engine work) our alternator quite charging, my partner and I landed immediately, when we pulled up to the hanger we were trailing a stream of oil, (one of the mechanics failed to tighten one of the drain back lines (hoseclamps) The alternator was covered with oil which caused it to fail momentarily. (had it not failed........?)
  14. Thanks for the info! A scary way to learn about SB488A, at least this time it was "live and learn"
  15. The new line has a steel nut and the line is reinforced (heavier wall) the last 1/2 inch or so.
  16. ??I couldn't find it on Lycoming's site
  17. Apparently not, but the new one is.

If anyone cares to listen to the ATC recordings PM me your email and I'll send them to you.
  19. I've used iPad/Foreflight HD for all my trip planning, briefing and filing since 2010, it's a great product, very easy to use.
