  1. I very much wish there would be an east coast availability of that presentation.
  2. Where are you? and where is your new J? A current and qualified J driver from this list could give you a good briefing in the plane and ride along to your home drone. Possibly a volunteer is available.
  3. Thanks Carusoam, I don't believe the transmission is an issue now (and hopefully never)....I see why you lead me to the archives...Ouch, that would be expensive! Come on out to the Cape sometime, hot today, but usually beautiful. Thanks again, PCD
  4. Looks like the old girl finally breathed her last.....the landing gear motor is shot. My A&P has a place to rebuild same but says the transmission is Plessy and no longer supported. Any ideas on the transmission? Are new motors available or must it be rebuilt? This is an '88 201LM.
  5. I have a 1988 J model with the Century 2000 autopilot. I have replaced the trim switch several times as they are really flimsy inside (very thin metal contacts) and they are very pricey ($750-800). I also have separate buttons for autopilot disconnect, CWS, etc. My avionics tech said there are 62 different versions of the switch depending on your individual equipment.
  6. Sorry guys....should have done a search on previous threads first! This has already been discussed thoroughly.
  7. Has anyone installed a dedicated AOA system in their Mooney yet? If so, what make, what did you think of it?, how many amu's were involved?
  8. Many thanks to all who replied. I was not aware of the D2000 D3000 issue. Will look into that.
  9. Has anyone had an inspection (as opposed to an overhaul) of the dual MAG lately? Were you more or less comfortable with that idea at the 500 hour point on the motor?
  10. I'm based at the Falmouth Airpark (roughly 4.5 miles south of the Coast Guard base. I have a J model that you are more than welcome to look at. I'm having some issues with the flaps at the moment, but that would not preclude a flight if you desire. Give me a call anytime....845-264-9980 (cell).
  11. I went to the local fire extinguisher place to find a replacement for the one in my J model..... the only thing they had does NOT fit in the bracket that came with the plane. Anyone know where to get such a fire extinguisher?
  12. I have a 3 blade (because I bought the airplane that way). I do think the 3 blade looks cooler, and in my humble opinion, it is smoother to fly behind.......BUT, as has already been said, it costs more to overhaul/replace, and it weighs more. I have an '88 J model. I believe the 3 blade gives me better climb performance off the runway, but slightly less cruise speed. My ship is really heavy, so the added weight of the 3 blade subtracts from my passenger carrying capability. If and when I need to replace the prop....I'm going to put on a 2 blade!! If I were in your shoes right now, I'd buy the 2 blade...... work with me here....I'm trying to save you some AMUs.
  13. Awesome pix....thank you!
  14. As mentioned by others, most engines seem to have a sweet spot somewhere around 5-7 quarts. The POH puts the minimum oil level quite a bit lower, but that would be after flight....not before. I find with my engine, that if I put 7 quarts in initially....I can fly 10-15 hours before I get down to 5 quarts. At 5 quarts (or thereabouts) I bring it back up to 7 again. Anything over 7 just gets blown out during flight. Oil dripping from the breather tube in moderation is really quite normal. The engine breathes, gets hot and cold, and drips a small amount normally after flight. I usually see a 1-2" spot in the tray i keep under the breather tube after flight. Seldom anything in excess of that. My engine currently has 400 hours since overhaul, and I'm just now starting to feel pretty good about it's reliability. New engines give me pause. Just my observations, your mileage my vary considerably.
  15. The primary purpose for the offset feature is "SLOP" (strategic lateral offset procedure), used on the North Atlantic tracks to aide in congestion and avoid turbulence from other aircraft. Airliners will typically offset anywhere from 1/2 to 2 miles from track to the right. With RVSM airspace in effect it is really quite congested up there every night. Here in the small airplane VFR world, as others have indicated, predictability is key to the controllers, and a parallel track to almost anything within the airway path of 8 miles is preferable to random deviations in a chaotic manner.
  16. I have a similar experience where my indications are always 1/2 dot right of course. The avionics shop tells me it's an internal tweaking they can do if it persists.
  17. If VFR, 5500 is the altitude to get clearance through the class Bravo in NYC. Otherwise, over the top of the Class Bravo, follow the Jersey shore, take the short hop across the entry to NY harbor, then down Long Island, and from there direct 5B6 (The Falmouth Airpark, Cape Cod). Without a doubt, the most beautiful Airpark in the country....the friendliest people (I live there, and I fly a Mooney). The runway is 2298' long, paved in very good condition. We have fuel on the field, lighted runway, no instrument approach. Overnight is only $15/night. We are the closest airport to Woods Hole. Trees at both ends of the runway....so be "on speed". If you fly final on speed it is not a problem. Brand new operations building. No transient ops at night. If you intend to stay overnight (especially multiple nights) bring a prop lock. Plenty of tie-down space. If you have any questions, please feel free to call my cell 845-264-9980...Pete Dooley. I'm there most of the time. Mooneys are always welcome at Falmouth!!
  18. Thanks to all..... great info. I also hate to take the bird off line for very long....would also be interested in a source for the original switch/CB just to keep the integrity of the panel.
  19. Landing light switch/CB trips as soon as I try to use the landing light. Bulb appears OK from the outside. No wiring changes or cowl disturbed. New light? New Switch? Help!
  20. Jim Todd at AeroMechanical is at the KPOU (Dutchess County) Not an MSC, but very knowledgeable with Mooney.....does many per year....has done my 201 for the last 6 years. I recommend him highly.
  21. I've flown the Tiger, which is a 180 HP version of the Cheetah (with a few other small differences), In fact I owned the plane. Very nice plane to fly....very light and direct on the controls, handles somewhat like a Mooney.......slower, but a fun plane to fly. Tom Cruise canopy that you can even have open in flight with some restrictions. Good on gas (the Cheetah is 160 HP)......slightly less GW, but physically almost the same airplane. Fixed prop, fixed gear, it doesn't get any more simple than this. I hope you get to take it up for a spin.
  22. Quote: DaV8or Welcome! Like the paint job. Did you just buy it, or long time owner?
