  1. Depends which one (Allison or PT6 powered), but the Allison powered one smokes the Acclaim on $/nm basis. 220knots at 15,000 on 26gph. Considering that contract jet fuel now regularly goes for 2.50 a gallon, that's hard to beat. In order to get Acclaim to hit that number, you're running all out burning 21gph, and eating cylinders and turbos not to mention $5 avgas. The PT6 powered ones are not that great plus they are really heavy because they are based on B36 and really need to go up for FL240 to get any sort of range. Problem is useful load and masks. PT6 turbine without pressurization makes no sense, Allison does. Jetprop is a fine airplane if you're a midget. I've looked at one where the useful load after full fuel was 130lb. Meridian does much better, with about 500lb left in the cabin. Both are 700nm no wind aircraft with any sort of a reserve. Both suffer from low, low Vmo, 188 in Meridian IIRC. Hard to gain your fuel back on descents. TBM is a proverbial brick sh!t house. 266Vo, flies just like a Mooney other than you can just plant it on landing. Actually, you kind of have to. I know turboprops are reliable, but unlike Meridian, which behaves like a glider even at gross, the TBM is a handful if you ever lose an engine at gross. Think space shuttle. You do not want to climb that thing at Vx. I do not believe sudden power failure is recoverable at low altitude. It will slam the ground hard if you do not maintain about 100knots into the crash. Personally, I believe engine out in a TBM right after take off will end very badly, but like I said, the PT6 is one reliable engine. You can't beat the operating costs for anything this capable, but the risk is there. If I had the operating costs, I'd rather have a Mustang, but we are talking more than twice per nm if flown 150 hours annually. Speeds are really identical on a 900nm trip. Two engines on the Mustang cost about the same to overhaul as one big block PT6. Think $500K when the time comes on TBM, $700K on a Mustang for both. Essentially a wash in the grand scheme of ownership, but Mustang does like to eat fuel and Cessna parts. Nothing ever breaks down on the TBM once you dump the Honeywell avionics.

  3. Open carry works great in wilderness, I do all the the time in WY, MT, CO, etc, you've all seen the picture. It's silly in the cities.

Didn't the Unitarians own a slice of that pie if it was to be owned? They've been cool with it for a while. What about some reformed Jews? I mean they've been around for a little while. What about the Episcopals?
  9. States did not lose anything. Once again, it's called full faith and credit. Bet you won't be so upset when it gets applied to CCW permits in the future. I know I won't be. The problem is SCOTUS is full of weasels and they did not want to use the constitutional basis because it would open this can of warms. Instead they came up with "dignity".
  10. How did they lose? This is the argument I have never understood and I guess never will. The lost nothing. When they got "greedy" and decided to turn marriage into a civil institution long time ago for tax brakes and other government "perks", they lost the ownership of the word "marriage". Every time a Catholic got divorced in civil courts, religion lost before as well. Lost double when they got remarried. What gives religion ownership of marriage, and which religion, too should be the arbitrator of standards? Religion gets no ownership in our government and our laws, see the first amendment. Many religions are perfectly fine with gay marriage. Did religion also lose in the states that actually voted on gay marriage and passed the laws allowing it in their legislature. You do understand "Full Faith and Credit", it's right in the constitution. States have to recognize other states legal documents, so even if gay marriage is to be illegal in one state, the state must recognize marriages performed in other states. This happens all the time when people move and divorce. All it takes for one state to legalize gay marriage, and all other states constitutional amendments defining the world marriage were violating our federalist setup. This is the same reason why your drivers license is valid in South Dakota. For all intents and purposes, not a damn thing changed for the religious. They can keep all their rules, but they do not get to apply their rules to others. DON'T TREAD ON ME. And BTW, marriage precedes most current religions and the current Almighty. He's only been around for about 4000 years. There have been many prior to him. Most are now dead. Not so Almighty after all.

  12. All SCOTUS and appeal court decisions are "judicial activism". That is the only thing they can do. Strike down a law, or uphold a law. They have no other powers. It's only "judicial activism" for the side that lost. What else can the appeal courts do? Once again, their only power is "judicial activism" and on SCOTUS level, they are not bound by anything, including precedent and the constitution per se, as they are the final interpreters of it and if it's written, it can be interpreted in at least 2 ways, but more than likely many more. When SCOUTS starts inserting laws (limiting anything) into the books, then, and only then, would their be outside of their powers. So far, they have never done it. Even 2+2 does not always equal 4, if you're looking at it from the point of view of quantum physics.
  13. Scalia has never seen a freedom he would like not curtailed in some way or another which is funny for the job he has chosen. Quite frankly the supreme court has one power and one power only. Ability to strike down laws, and laws by their very definition can only be restrictive, for if something is not illegal, it is permitted. Today they struck down a bunch of laws limiting rights of certain group of individuals. They did not infringe on anyone else rights. Being a constitutional republic, there are limits to how we can govern ourselves. It works both ways. Chicago and other cities now have to allow guns within their limits even though majority their of population have chosen not to allow them. Majority does not always rule. That's called pure democracy and makes for a terrible form of government. Nobody lost anything with the decision made today. Rights were only expanded.
  14. Actually, no it was not. As it was written, it only applied to federal government and did not apply to states until the 14th amendment was passed and then only piece by piece. Read "Barron v Baltimore". Only with 14th amendment, was the bill of rights slowly incorporated to apply to state laws. I knows my history. I didn't go to public school. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..." So if Bill of Rights did not apply of States, but only to federal government, and yet the founders used the word State to mean the Federal United States, you can see how the Supremes found the whole "State Exchange" issue confusing. BTW, if you really think about, USA was founded as a progressive utopia...I'm pretty positive the conservatives all over the world were screaming on top of their lungs on July 4th, 1776 about some liberal wackos in the new world. Well, more likely around September, 1776, being it was before Twitter. ​I think todays ruling was not constitutionally well founded. I wish Kennedy would have stayed out of it, and then Roberts would have to have been the 5th vote. And he would have been. But it would been ruled on Full Faith and Credit clause, leaving marriage up to state laws, but forcing them to recognize marriages from other states. Just like some states do not let cousins marry, but have to recognize cousins legally married in other states. Then the dominos would have fallen pretty quickly, but not based on "dignity". But whatever, end result would have been the same. Which is great. Time for a beer, or two.

  16. I guess I've never had this level of experience. Every now and then, especially when dealing with large repair stations, I have felt I have been overcharged for the work performed, all aircraft mechanics I have found and worked with over the years have been nothing but professional and fully understanding that my life is in their hands. I had an issue once with my local guys on the engine mount but in retrospect it was an issue of communication and different standards between large repair station that did my annual and my local guys who did the engine R&R.

On the subject of attorneys, watching a good one work a deposition is like watching Michael Angelo paint the sistine chapel. Watching a bad one (about 80% of them) is like watching Sarah Palin attempt to form a sentence. I love depositions…Yes, I am a sick individual, but I've always enjoyed a good lawsuit. It's a game of chess and you get to play with very expensive pawns.
  19. I think flying a taildragger makes everybody a much better pilot. Sure made me realize what the rudder is for. I have about 50 hours or so in a Super D I was a partner in till it lost an engine and ended up in Platte River. Ever seen a plane being towed by an airboat?

  21. Flying it into the ground is not a wheel landing, that's a 2 1/2 point landing. 3 point are much easier because they to not require precision attitude control. You're essentially becoming a parachute from anywhere from 3 feet up on lower. A proper wheel landing takes much more finesse than any 3 pointer. A guy who can wheel land, can skim the water with wheels for the entire length of the lake. Wheel landings require speed and altitude precision in 1/10th the units than a 3 pointer requires. A good wheel landing, you can't even tell the plane touched down. I have no idea what you mean you have to know your airplane for a 3 pointer. Put it 3 feet over the runway, and keep on pulling back, you got yourself a 3 pointer. A wheel landing requires so much more finesse to arrest the rate of sink at the last moment without too much elevator movement so that the last 3 inches of movement happen over few hundred feet. A tail does not move upon touchdown, it remains parallel to the runway.
  22. I would avoid factory engines like plague. I did mine with a local company called Central Cylinder (a company that BTW does more P51 engines than anyone else, if anybody wonders about their quality). You can eat off their shop floor. I dealt directly with the owner and his sons. Factory wanted $58,000 for overhaul, it didn't matter that my turbo, exhaust and everything else were only few hundred hours old and that my cylinders were 1100 hours old and running 78/80 compression. My total cost for the overhaul, including all new pistons, rings, springs, valves, camshaft, lifters, all to new limits, $32,000. That's $26 less than factory and about $20K less than what big name shops wanted. I ask them how they do it so cheap. He said he prices parts, labor plus profit instead of looking at Lycoming price sheet. Keep in mind that Bravo's engine is nothing special, your run of the mill, parallel valve 250hp mill in its natural aspirated form. Makes senses to me. Best part of dealing with them? I saw a lot of crankshafts from big name shops being turned. Yes, most big name shops outsource their crank work to them. I wonder how much those people are paying. Good warranty too and unlike Lycoming, according to our local flight school, they actually stand behind it: 24 months/1000 hours.
