  2. Jug of iced tea and a jug of Gatorade. Drink one if sleepy and the other if thirsty. And piss bags. That’s about it really. You’d be surprised how much taking your shoulder harness and shoes off reduces prolonged sitting fatigue. Also, the QT Halo is the only headset that is still comfortable after 5 hours. 6 hours goes by in no time! Especially when you’re going somewhere 10+ hours away.

  4. Yeah, wondered about that too. That lines up with about the bottom of my yellow arc. Maybe someone who followed his math can actually translate that into real Mooney numbers?

In the video he explains the importance of spiral divergence recovery training and demonstrated some G load math for varying airplanes including Mooney. Do Mooneys end up a smoking crater intact when they experience spiral dive due to spatial disorientation? What insight or advice do you have on this topic as it pertains to Mooneys specifically?

  8. I agree that the cheapest fuel isn’t necessarily the best fuel. Often there’s a catch such as the runway is really short or it’s in the middle of nowhere. If you want to reduce stress and risk, go for the bigger airports with services. Also check the hours for FBO you plan to use in Florida. Don’t be surprised they close at 6PM. Sometimes it’s cutting it close when you’re arriving from far away.

  10. Actually I’m more impressed with the ground speed a Mooney can make into a headwind. Some airplanes would literally be flying backwards and many others couldn’t make half my forward speed. Example: 50 knot headwind Piper Cub - 15 knots ground speed 152 - 30 knots ground speed 172 - 45 knots ground speed Cherokee - 60 knots ground speed 201 - 110 knot ground speed Tailwinds are fun but not as impressive. I’ve seen around 200 knots. I usually slow down in a tailwind to save fuel.
  11. Has anyone actually used their baggage rope?? I’ve been flying with it for a decade and never needed it unexpectedly. I only bring rope when I expect to need it. Haven’t had trouble finding tie down at most airports. I only bring rope going somewhere really remote or unattended. My baggage organizer was becoming unreasonably heavy with all the “just in case” or “couldn’t hurt” to bring kind of stuff. It was gradually growing but lately I’ve slimmed down based on experience.
  12. I forgot to mention the screw driver. Multi tip screw driver is a permanent resident of hat rack. Everything else is in the most-of-the-time tool kit in the baggage compartment.

Hat rack: screwdriver, dip stick, gatz jar, plexus, rag, small plastic box with oil spout, 2x foil emergency blankets, original poh (digital copy for real use on iPad), pack of gallon hefty bags, roll of paper towels Baggage: tow bar, chocks, cowl plugs, pitot cover, and canopy cover (when not on the ground), quart of oil I keep life jackets and a tool bag in the baggage most of the time unless I’m pressed for space or weight. Some items in the tool bag include safety wire, tape, spark plug, fuel drain sump, zip ties. I used to keep a baggage organizer and more permanent items. But over the years they would accumulate, add weight, and not be used. I haven’t had the need for the just in case items so I discontinued carrying them. Such as rope, handheld radio, cleaning supplies, and the kitchen sink.

  15. They say "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." What say you? Are you old, bold, or both?
  16. Usually you have to get the whole plane along with the seats to get those. However, a little birdie tells me the fox just got a 252 strapped to a set of the new style seats you're looking for.

  20. Do you mean issued a phone number but didn't call? Or going NORDO to the point they couldn't issue one in the first place?
  21. Have you ever been issued a possible pilot deviation? Was it just a friendly chat, chew out, or did it lead to FAA action?
  22. Seems like the absolute best thing you can do is FORGET ABOUT THE DOOR!!!! Keep your speed up, go land, deal with it on the ground. Fiddling with it or wasting any attention thinking about it seems to be the cause of more than one serious accident. And secondarily, never let passengers (including other pilots) close the door. This virtually guarantees it won't open in flight.
