  1. Seth, you should go for it before they shut off the pump. You've got a hungry bird and its a lot of fun. I've been hanging in Phoenix and Vegas and will be taking a fuel stop in San Marcos heading back.
  2. Thats lame that they're ending it early but luckily im going through there again tomorrow for a top off
  3. Wasn't me! Though I was flying my Mooney in that area yesterday. Heard a plane request flight following to Sedona and ATC said the airport is closed. Pilot said he had a briefing and wasn't aware of this. ATC responded that there was a crash at the airport and that it was closed until all the debris can be removed. Didnt realize it was a Mooney.
  4. Arrived in San Marcos after not 10 but 11 hours cause I had to slow down to make range. Only used one bag aloft and no bird poo on me. I cant wait till the line guy sees my tanks. His hand is gonna hurt.
  5. Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue at 2PM. Also meeting an outdoor bird club in a different part in the morning but I don't know where it is cause someone's taking me. If you wanna come to the 8AM-Noon one, PM me your number and I'll try to get the info for that one for you. Otherwise here's my upcoming schedule and there's a chance I'll be adding Houston on as well. San Marcos, TX - Saturday October 5, 11AM Vintage Mooney Group Redbird Skyport San Marcos Airport - KHYI 2080 Airport Dr San Marcos, TX 78666 Tempe, AZ - Sunday, October 6, 2PM AZ Exotic Bird Rescue 1290 N. Scottsdale Rd Suite 104 Tempe, AZ 85281 Dallas, TX - Saturday October 12, 1PM Tree Top Bird Center Pavilion North Shopping Center 7615 Campbell Rd, Suite 112 Dallas TX 75248 Fort Worth, TX - Sunday October 13, 2PM Fort Worth Bird Club Fort Worth Botanic Garden 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd. Fort Worth, TX 76107
  6. Tomorrow I'll be attempting a 10 hour non-stop flight from KLDJ to KHYI for that $1/gallon gas. Boy will they be in for a surprise when they have to pour 90 gallons into my tanks. For your amusement you guys can place your bets and track my flight: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N4361H http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0qx3v8UKt3rtQecIVYYZyf39kIpQSWBMk Then on Saturday, the birds and I will drop in for the VMG lunch at San Marcos. Sunday I'm doing two appearances in Phoenix if any of you wanna see birds or Saturday night I'll be coming in to KCHD if you wanna stop by and jiggle my aoa.
  7. I should mention an update. I had the timing redone and sure enough it wasn't 25. Not sure how much the differential was. I also had the plugs rotated, injectors cleaned, and swapped based on my observations. Now it runs beautifully, all EGTs are +/-10 of each other in LOP cruise, smooth, cool, excellent. Still hotter on right mag then left on an in flight EGT check but nowhere near as much as before. Thanks for the suggestions.
  8. What's the point of talking about going past TBO? Everyone knows these engines are rigged to fall apart way before then anyway!
  9. Ok VMG, I'll be there! I added it to my tour schedule as well and will make a public announcement in case any bird nuts wanna come watch. Only issue I may have is I don't think I can bring birds inside a restaurant so hopefully we can find outside seating or talk them into letting us. I gotta get outta there by 1PM at the latest so let's get an early start. I'll be flying out to San Marcos tomorrow.
  10. At least on a mission to mars it's all new and tested equipment. Sucks to be ferrying a 50 year old hangar queen across the ocean on a single engine!
  11. Beware, ATC is not obligated to vector you or keep you out of airspace if you're VFR. They are only providing traffic advisories to you and keeping you away from IFR traffic. They can get busy and you can fly yourself right into a restricted zone or bravo airspace and it's your fault not theirs.
  12. Ever toss water drops on a hot pan?
  13. Next time try requesting "radar advisories" instead.
  14. If it's a FAA Wings talk, it's over cause of govt shutdown.
  15. Oh. Well if this is the case, then it's safer to load up some heavy item you'd bring regardless into the baggage rather than on the seat behind the pilot!
  16. 6000-8000 works best for a combination of speed/economy. Economy cause you're LOP and speed cause you can make 60-70% power. Higher, LOP you're stuck operating at possibly too low a power or you have to go ROP and you're spending more gas than if you were lower LOP.
  17. Why is the baggage weight limit 120lbs? Is it a structural issue or a CG issue? What's the most you've flown with back there? How come it hasn't increased any in the long bodies which have enough room to fit a baby elephant?
  18. Could be worse... like if your prior meal were in Karachi Pakistan: http://youtu.be/2yQApLkPbYA?t=24m5s
  19. Would you care to elaborate? What strategy do you recommend for those of us who don't have spoilers what to do when ATC demands you down and you don't want to exceed speeds? Or like you say coming into a valley where you need a steep descent. I realize you give a whole course about this but can you summarize the strategy for avoiding shock cooling/overspeeding and descending all at the same time?
  20. Who's Edgar?
  21. What happened? Did it continue to fly ok on the right mag after?
  22. 300?? Sometimes my front cylinders don't get to 300 in cruise! What about Oil Temp? Mine never reaches "green" on the ground but I figure since there's no lower boundary red line, it's ok as long as it's warm.
  23. I don't know. But I can tell you that pouring boiling water into a cold glass bottle doesn't do anything but pouring cold water on a just boiled bottle cracks it. Shock heating vs shock cooling may have varying implications. That said, I still have yet to see immediate evidence of harm done by supposed "shock cooling" an engine. Still, it's not a bad idea to allow the engine to get warmer and cooler in as gradual a manner as reasonably possible and then not worry about it beyond that.
  24. I will admit that when practicing "simulated engine outs" with the throttle idle, you quickly tune out the gear warning and are holding off to put the gear down as long as possible. It's a disaster waiting to happen.
  25. Guess you'll have to come to San Marcos and see
