  1. Walt- I sent you a PM
  2. Quote: FlyWalt Hello all, Brand new to the forum and about to put a deposit on an 85 231. I would like pop a few questions. I am a commercial pilot but have never owned an aircraft before so these might sound like newbie questions. 1. Does anyone have suggestions for a prebuy shop. The aircraft is in Stuart and is out of annual. 2. Is a buyer typically limited to shops and mechs who are at that airport. Or can u negotiate to ferry to your preferred shop. In this case a 337 will be needed. 3. How much of a corrosion problem should I expect with a Fla based aircraft. Thank you in advance, Walt
  3. I just installed a GTN 650. It is by far the best piece of avionics I have ever used....Don’t rule it out. Last time I had my 13 year old son with me I let him fiddle with the unit for about 10 minutes once we were in cruise configuration. After his 10 minutes of playing with the touch screen he was as proficient with it as I was. It’s that simple to use. Simplicity, ease of operation, reliability, and display quality are the hallmarks of that unit if you were to ask me. There is nothing else out there that even comes close right now.
  4. Based on my experience the "experts" are working at the Sarasota location...if that matters
  5. +1 for Sarasota Avionics. Oddly enough my GTN 650 installation was screwed up as well. I had both wiring and programming issues; however, they work diligently to get those issues fixed in a timely manner. I would definitely use them again
  6. Quote: pjsny78 I am by no means a Mooney expert but when I started looking at Mooney’s before I decided upon my “J” I noticed something about the entire “K” lineup that I thought was very interesting and chose not to buy that particular plane. When you look at controller and trade a plane I noticed hardly any of the planes made it to about 1k hrs. before needing an overhaul. Even previous owners of “k” models told me the same thing. I’m not sure why that is but the bravos seem to make it to TBO. I know I’m probably going to get some heat for this bit it’s just what I have noticed. Again I am not an expert on this area just an observation.
  7. All- I recently removed a PS Engineering PXE7300 (am/fm radio & CD player) from my Mooney in order to panel mount my 696. It works perfectly and according to the avionics shop they sell new for $1295.00. If anyone is interested in purchasing it send me an email with an offer. Highest bidder will get it! 8. When you say 50K is about what you could afford I wonder what you mean by "afford"? A plane isn't a car so the bottom line purchase price is not all you have to think about... please remember that. The cheapest part of airplane ownership is the purchase price, from there things just keep multiplying. No one on this board is going to be able to tell you or theorize that your going to be able to fly anything for 500 hrs expense free. I would take what you could "afford" and cut that amount in half and look to spend that amount on an airplane. i.e. I have 100K and will spend 50K on the purchase and have a 50K reserve for the things that WILL go wrong vice i have 100K and will use the entire amount on the purchase and "hope" nothing goes wrong for the next 500 hrs.
  9. My vote is for the iPad 2 w/ foresight backed up with an iPhone 4. I don't carry paper charts with me any more. Love the streamlined nature of the iPad and weight/cost savings of not having to deal with anything paper. It really keeps things organized in the cockpit.
  10. My bird is over @ Sarasota Avionics getting a panel clean up of sorts for the new year! The old ADF, DME, as well as the CD player, and 430W are out going. Incoming is a GTN 650 which will crossfill to my 696 which they are also going to panel mount. Hope to have some pictures and PIREPS by the weekend if all goes according to plan.
  11. I wanted to check to see if anyone in the SE anticipates needing a ride to Longview in Mar or April. I'm going to be flying to KGGG to drop my bird off for her yearly check up and was looking for a ride back with someone in exchange for a ride there with me. I hate flying back commercial when I don't have to. I'm in Jacksonville Fl
  12. so what do you all think about LoP operations?
  13. You should always change the tube when you change the tire
  14. Corrosion is to a Mooney what cancer is to a human. Don't take any chances as like cancer corrosion could also kill you
