  1. Does this mean there is a Mooney approved screwdriver and wrench ??
  2. I believe Phil has a "C" model ...
  3. LASAR STC'd Kits No. Name Speed Increase Parts HDW & STC/Labor 127 200 HP Conversion (M20C, M20D, M20G, M20E&F) (STC 4.0 mph $605.00/Call Plus the cost of the engine and labor ... all the best ...
  4. I had a 1949 Piper Clipper that had 2,450 hours on the O-235 C-1 and was still running GREAT! I had to rebuild that engine, despite it ran well with that high time, because I could not find a mechanic who would sign-off on the engine during my annual. I suspect you will have the same problem.
  5. I like the E.L.T. 406 that Aircraft Spruce sells. It has a GPS built-in that transmits your exact position on the ELT signal. I don't believe it transmits on 121.5 ... or at least the read does not state that it does. The price is certainly right considering the capabilities !!
  6. True ... but at this time ... in DC, the Sprint 4G is waaay faster than the ATT 3G. The ATT 3G is, indeed, faster than the Sprint 3G, so I would guess that they will probably continue this trend. Anyway, the fact that haveing a device which will do the upcoming technology and not have it tied to an individual piece of hardware is still a valid point. How many wireless connections does one want to pay for ?? Believe me when I say that the phone company has a lot more money than anyone on this site.
  7. It's called an "Overdrive". I have a blurb on it on the 1st page of this thread ... Sorry ... a senior moment ..
  8. Actually, I take a little different tack. If you get the 3G in the unit ... you are stuck with 3G when 4G comes around ... and 4G is LOTS better than 3G. The metrics are 4G 3-6 Mbs vs 600Kbs-1.4Mbs; with a peak of 10Mbs vs 3.1Mbs for 3G. In addition, you need to pay for another wireless service just for the iPad. With the money you save from getting the non-3G unit, you can get a blue tooth connected WAAS GPS unit and have change left over. You can then get a "MyFi (or whatever it is called)" 4G WAP from Sprint. You can then use this WAP not only for the iPad but for any device that has wireless access in it PLUS you can use it for 3G to connect to the internet, as well as 4G when it becomes more prevelant. It is battery powered and you can put it in your shirt pocket for 3G/4G connection. Wireless to the internet and wireless to your iPad plus anything else that has WiFi in it. We have them at work and they are really neat little devices. Pay for 1 wireless device to access the Internet, use it for many devices to access the person.
  9. I've the Britain B6 coupled to my 430. Works great. I've called Brittain to see about converting the B6 to a Nav2b (alt hold). 3 AMU to refurb what I have and upgrade to 2B ... not bad ...
  10. Roger ... Actually, I was just joking around. I am looking for headrests for my plane, also. After reading about your find, I exited to the parking lot and checked out a few RAV's to see the product up close. Thanks for the idea ...
  11. Little chance you will be hit from behind ...
  12. No eAPIS, but you MUST file a flight plan.
  13. 6'5" @ 275# and my "C" model works for me ...
  14. PS - Phillips X/C = $41.14/case @ http://www.airplaneoil.com/
  15. I put in a JPI FS-450 for $500 for the unit and $250 install. Couples to the GNS-430. Works great !! I love it !!
  16. Since the engine has 1400 hours since OH, it seems like a GREAT opportunity to get an overhauled engine in the plane with the seller paying a significant amout of the cost. You end up with an engine you can count on and which will last for YEARS while paying less than doing it yourself!! Just a thought ...
  17. Putting money into a plane is a function of how much you like the plane ... regardless of age or model. Anyone who feels that an aircraft is an investment is in for a surprise. Folks buy a new Mooney for over a half mill +. When they sell it, how much money do they lose? Probably a lot more than you will, putting avionics that you covet into your plane, if you enjoy your plane and are going to keep it for awhile. I'm putting a fair amount of money into my '66 "C" model. Why? Because they don't make '66 "C"s any more and it is the plane that suits me the best. I plan to keep it until I can no longer pass the medical. Enjoy yourself ... enjoy life. Remember ... this is NOT a dress rehersal !!
  18. Yes, the GPS is derived by satellites specifically for that service. The rest are terrestrial services from the "phone companies" and other "Ground based" providers. 3G and 4G are high speed data services offered by the moble phone vendors. "Hotspots" and WAP's (wireless access points) are local wireless services put up by airports, merchants (to bring in customers) and people who want to setup computer networks in their home without running wires. Some companies also uses WAP's to eliminate wiring costs. Bluetooth is an RF connectivity used between an individual and their various electronic devices to eliminate wiring. It would be really nice if Internet access were availble in flight. I suppose that it could be had by something like Hughes satellite but not too practical.
  19. $200 ... that IS a good price for what it does!! I guess I will wait a bit for it to arrive on the market so I can play with it. As for the 3G built into the I-pad ... the problem with that is that the 3G is only usable for the device it is built into ... unless it can also act as a "hot spot". With the external 3G/4G, you can use that connectivity with any device that has Wifi capabilities. This makes your 3G/4G more flexible and gives you a higher ROI.
  20. Scott ... Boy!! That EVO 4G IS nice!! It seems to have every connectivity known to modern man!! I may wait for that. The device I was using from work is the Sierra Wireless Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile hot spot. I carry it around in my shirt pocket and use "Skype" in my little Acer notebook P/C to make calls. Amazing what is capable with technology now. I’ve attached a photo of the Sierra for general information … It IS very handy, but the EVO (if it is affordable) will be even cooler. The Sierra is ~$80.
  21. I have been looking into this, myself. I believe what I am going to do is buy a MyFi ( I believe that is what they call it) medallion from Sprint. The medallion does 4G/3G and WiFi. It is battery powered and runs for 8-10 hours per charge. I can turn it on, get a 3G/4G connection and Wifi ANYTHING to it. What's nice about this is you don't need another service to pay for. At home, use the 4G (as fast as my DSL, maybe faster); on the road, I can use what every it can pickup ... and with the Wifi connectivity you are not committed to one device as you are when you are using wireless which is "built in". 4G is a little spotty now, but 3G is everywhere. 4G will be here in spades by next year ... I've about 4 devices with "built in" wireless and it is driving me to the poor house. I believe this may be a better way to go. PS - the size of the device is nice. I can carry it in a shirt pocket and you can barely see it. We have them at work and I've had a chance to use it ... very nice !!
  22. Regarding the engine on the red/white Mooney. No, All American aircraft was shocked about the engine. As a matter of fact, my mechanic, Ron Fisher, was allowed to use All American's hanger to do the pre-buy. All American had bought this plane from the previous owner just after it had been annual'd by a well known Mooney expert in Texas. They were confident that the plane was OK because of his name on the annual. They were quite shocked when Ron found the engine problem. I can honestly say that I felt that All American wanted to sell me a quality product. My experience with them found them to be honest in their appraisal. This event, more than any other in the past few aircraft I had owned proved to me that the money spent on the pre-buy is money well spent. Even the experts miss something once in awhile. This mistake cost All American beau coup bux. I would not hesitate to work with All American in the future. They are not cheap but they are a class act.
  23. I actually had this very plane in pre-buy in November of last year. During the pre-buy they found the engine was junk. Broke my heart. All American immediately pulled it off the line and to the rebuilder it went. There was a 2nd plane there, N5956Q, which I ended up buying. Not as many up-grades, actually pretty stock, but there had been a TON of fixed completed on it by the previous owner over the last 4 years, including resealing both wings. Maybe a little rougher in the interior but mechanically in excellent condx and it had a Brittan autopilot (as well as the PC) and a GNS-430 in it to boot. I've been very happy with it. I flew 5956Q from San Antonio to Mobile, Al and then to Martinsburg, WV. in an attempt to get around the storm which was dumping a boat-load of snow in WV. I flew back at 9000 at 20 squared and got about 19 MPG for the trip. I never expected a plane to get that kind of mileage. This is my 3rd plane and I believe it is a keeper. Maybe a few knots slower than the "E", but cheap to fly, low maintenance and a bullet-proof engine to boot. Not a bad combination ...
  24. Richard helped me find my Mooney. He steered me away from one which would have cost me mucho bux and I ended up with one which I have not been able to find comparable per price to this date.
  25. I actually posted this thread more as a notification ... but from a political side, I DO find it upsetting that the navigation system that we (our country) has pegged for all of us to hang our hat on (all meaning, commercial, private AND military) is hanging so precariously by a thread. I guess I am a belt and suspenders man, but I would have liked to see a spare on on the shelf. It also makes me wonder about the haste in shutting down legacy systems, which worked very well and were more "cost effective". We are also entering a time of a peak in solar activity. Experts are saying it will be a "doozy". That most probably will interfere with satellite services or perhaps damaging some of that sensitive equipment floating around out there. Just my concerns ...
