  1. I first learned of carb heat guages in my Cessna 175. The engine was a GO-300. If you used carb heat unnecessarly, you could cause pre-ignition in the engine and a lot of trouble. The plane came standard with a carb temp guage. Watching that guage and using carb heat only when necessary (per the POH) I never had any trouble. When I bought my Mooney, it had a carb heat guage installed. I began to use it as I had in the 175. So far so good ...
  2. AMU = Aircraft Monetary Unit = $1000 US
  3. Yep, 1200 was the TBO. Also, it is amazing the low time on airframe/engine for homebuilts. I guess the idea that there are builders and there are flyers, but not too many builder/flyers, is accurate.
  4. If you run your Mooney @ 19 squared, you will get the speed of a Cessna 172 with the fuel burn of a 152.
  5. I have a carburetor temp guage with temperature warning alarm. I use carb heat when I see the warning that I am +/- some degrees from freezing. I have even used my carb heat in cruise when the alarm went off.
  6. I had a GO-300 in a Cessna 175 which went to TBO. It used half an oil tanker of oil during this time, however (leaks, not burn). When I would land and go into the FBO for an hour or so, upon return, the plane would be mapped into the tarmac with a huge oil stain the shape of the plane )
  7. OK ... it's annual time for me. With this great resource (MooneySpace) it behoves me to ask where the best place to get a Mooney annual would be. I normally use Freeway (W00) ... they are an MSC. Are there any other better places in the DC area??
  8. I fly out to Boulder to see my daughter and land at that airport. I usually set up 100 deg ROP for takeoff/landing in my "C" model.
  9. At this point the plane is "unairworthy" and to move it he has to get a ferry permit. The FAA will decide.
  10. Boy, I don't understand. I'm 6'5" and have no problems with my Zulu's in my M 20 C.
  11. Remember that LED's do not draw enough current to dim with the old rheostat. To keep the old rheostat, you must either have a bulb somewhere in the circuit or a resistance to ground to draw enough current through the rheostat to setup the voltage gradiant. This definately requires a licensed individual to do the work.
  12. Aviation Consumer says that the Sporty's 400 is tops ...
  13. It is possible to get used, non-waas 430's for ~$3 - $4K. This would give you nav/com and gps. Just another ideal.
  14. The timing of one mag could be a little off. How much is the difference ?
  15. I don't think it will hurt XM WX since it is too expensive to get internet at altitude. XM WX is via satellite and works good at any altitude.
  16. Very well done!! Liked it a lot!!
  17. Scott ... I've many hobbies over the years aside from flying and there are "anti's" for every one of them. Some are: SCUBA (hurting the reefs), ham radio (rf exposure), photography (privacy and security), woodworking (People say that this is just rich folks having fun ) ), boating (pollution, noisy, rich folks having fun )), hunting (guns are dangerous, poor animals), RC Modeling (dangerous, noisy, rich folks having fun )). I didn't know I was rich!! I don't believe that there is a hobby out there that there is someone who does not disapprove of!! Ask around and see how many other people have hobbies. I am shocked at the number of guys where I work that don't really have a hobby (other than an occasional golfer). No imagination!! Thank goodness for organizations who want to protect us, like EAA and AOPA. I belong to both, as well as ARRL (ham radio) and AARP ( old dudes). I am convinced that there are a million people out there who HATE to see others have a good time and make it a point to try to stamp it out. Off soapbox ...
  18. Avionics are close ... the LORAN is useless. There were many important updates to the M20C up to 1966. Go with the '68.
  19. Hmmm ... Clear laquer in a spray can should seal it for awhile. That's what they use on brass door handles, etc.
  20. From my understanding, the weight and balance records need to be adjusted and signed by a certified mechanic. IF there is no change in their status, that should also be logged. If there is data missing, you will need to have your plane re-weighed and have a new weight and balance chart completed for you. You may get hung-up during an annual if someone really digs into the log books.
  21. I ended up with Anywhere Map with XM WX and am very happy. I reallly like the geo-position on approach plates WITH terrain and XM WX super imposed. The GPS is WAAS and works very well. Not good for primary on approach but GREAT situational awareness. Also, geo-positional data for airport diagrams, etc.
  22. Quote: FlyDave A friend of mine flew his 210 to the east coast last week and landed at Teterboro in New Jersey. He paid $60/night for an OUTSIDE TIEDOWN and $8.60/gal for 100LL. Unbelieveable!!
  23. I coveted the expensive watches in the past; but 30 years ago, I had just bought a sailboat and was taking a course in Celestial Navigation. I needed a watch which would keep accurate time over weeks/months and discovered that the Seiko would do this for only a few hundred dollars. I have been wearing Seiko and Citizen watches for decades with fantastic results. At about the same time in history, I worked in a TOC (Television Operations Center) for ATT. We had a guy who had a passion for Rolex watches. He used to come into the TOC everyday to set his Rolex to our clocks. I used to do a countdown with my Seiko for him to set his multi-thousand dollar Rolex!! My Seiko was within less than a second when it came time to adjust for daylight savings, year after year after year. Over the years I have lost my desire to spend thousands on a watch.
  24. I worked through Richard to get a "C" model about a year ago. He steered me away from a plane which had a lot of issues I was looking at and saved me a bundle. Eventually he found me a "C" at a very good price. I have yet to see a "C" as well equiped and in as good a repair as the one I bought for the amount I bought it for. I have had a very good experience with Richard and felt that it was a good deal. In addtion, he has saved me a few grand on upgrades I bought through him since then. In all ... a pretty good deal.
