Before the purchase of an EDM 800 I would typically be manually calculating fuel burn rates from the POH inflight and allowing a little extra just for safe measure only to land with 5-6 gallons more in the tanks than my figures showed. After flying with the EDM 800 for several years and consistantly seeing it accurately measure fuel burn within .1 gal per tank I became confident flying longer legs knowing my actual remaining fuel. Longest leg was 1177NM from LWS-LMI done in 6.2 hours averaging 189kts and 7.4gph. Landed with 6 gal remaining. Had a s#it load of help from winds flying Eastbound at 17.5K that day. Continued on to Hartford, CT the next day traveling an additional 800NM non stop. Mooneys truely are one of the best if not the best cross country aircraft money can buy! I won't bore you with the details of the Westbound return to LWS but let's just say it was measured on the calendar instead of the clock!

I've got an extra polished aluminum spinner and bulkhead from a 65 E if anyone is interested.

Quote: scottaviation Mooney 65E Hi, Im currently in the process of stripping and resealing my fuel tanks in my J and am looking at using RPM polygone stripper, I am wondering what type possibly make and model of circ pump and person would use to circulate the stripper through the tanks without eating or damaging the pump components, its a big job and don't need the headache of going through 2-3 pumps to finish the job. Great idea by the way. Thanks, Chris

Plan on doing some paint work to the underside of the wing where the stripper oozes past the access panels. It'll get pretty messy...just keep it contained, keep your cool and you'll be glad you tackled the job yourself. Nearly 10 years ago I machined two cover plates from .250" aluminum that covered the lower access panels. I drilled and tapped one hole in each and installed a brass sprinkler fitting on the inside of the outboard panel. On the bottom of the inboard panel I installed a return line which drained stripper fluid to a metal tub where it was recirculated through a submersible pump back to the sprinker/spray head inside the wing tank. About 5-6 hours and we were completely rid of the old sealant and ready to apply the new (we also used Flamemaster). Ten years later and the tanks haven't leaked a drop!! We passed the pump, tank and panels around the airport to other Mooney owners wanting to reseal their tanks. Not sure what ever happened to them or who has them now, but it's not too terribly difficult to rig another one up. Take the thousands of dollars you saved and spend it elsewhere on your plane.

Quote: flight2000 One rotten apple. Still a lot of other good brokers out there, but as always, buyer beware. His deal with aircraft buyers was his deposit program. You couldn't even see the plane in person until you dropped $5K and good luck getting that back if the aircraft was a dog and you didn't want to follow through with the sale (some where, some weren't).

Scooter, I've got a WX-8 that'll be coming out of my plane soon. Make me an offer and it's yours.

Hey Ron, I plugged your route from 48D to LAL into my Voyager Skypad and found your best fuel stop is approx. at the halfway point (just over 3 hrs). Middlesboro, KY (1A6) has a current fuel price of $3.85. I've never been there, but having a population of 14,000 should have a few motels and or restaurants to choose from. Good luck and have fun on the trip!

We travel with two dogs, one big and one small. They love to go with us no matter the mode of transport. To keep the back seat area clean, I made a pattern of the back seat out of paper and transferred it to 'FAA approved fabric'. We added some snap receivers behind the back seat and to the screws along the windows and just snap the fabric into place when the dogs travel. We remove the cover for two-legged passengers and to wash. --Kathy Hendricks

Poll: Which Engine Analyzer
Mooney65E replied to flight2000's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Brian, I've got the EDM 830 and absolutely love it. It's got everything I need in a relatively small package. If I had a wad-o-cash and plenty of panel space, I'd opt for the 930. -
Handheld Transceivers - Which one to buy?

Thought I'd bump this thread as I'm going to OSH with plans to purchase among other things an EFB. There's probably new units out since last Christmas. I'm looking to get rid of all the paper charts with minimal subsciption and hopfully georeference capability. Any thoughts on whos booth I should visit?

I dealt with R&M years ago after weeding through several others. They seemed to have the overall best product for the price staffed with a team of professionals. I'd also recommend having a bifold door installed where plans will allow. I enjoy pushing that button and watching that door slowly reveal my shiney bird.

I picked up approx. 3 kts after having the laser cowl closure installed. I added silicone to a number of small cracks in the doghouse temporarily until new sheet metal was fabrcated to keep temps down. I'd like to get rid of the doghose completely and replace with a modern shroud. Anyone know if that's legal?

In Pre-Purchase Inspection - Need Help!
Mooney65E replied to dmevans's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Fuel leaking into the cabin shows evidence of a break in the seal around the fuel sending unit. Had this happen years ago on my 65E. It's not a big deal to have them resealed and definitely not a deal breaker IMO. Very nice of the owner to knock $4500 off the purchase price for something that may only cost a tube of proseal and a days work from your mechanic. That plane should be worth every penny of 49.5k. The GNS430w and Stec 30 with alt hold alone will cost almost 20k to have installed in another plane. I say go for it! Let us all know what you decide. Good luck! -

Anyone know what years the doghouse was standard and when they finally did without. They easily add 2 hours to every annual.

I installed an EDM 800 in 2001 and upgraded to the 830 in 2010. Never had any problems with the probes, even those which share space with my Tanis engine warmer. Phil, you're not becoming demented with age, it's the JPI manual!!! I too had trouble weeding through the installation and programming instructions in the manual that also shares information about various other JPI products. When I initially fired the unit up, there was no evidence of any fuel flow functions. I spent hours going over any connections linked to fuel functions. It was a Saturday afternoon, so no JPI tech support available. On Monday morning I was able to talk to tech support who informed me of something missing from the manual. It was a tiny switch needing to be in a certian position on power up (while simultaneously holding a button down for 3 and 1/2 seconds, chanting EDM 830 and waving a rabbits foot from left to right. Now that it's all ironed out, I'm happy with it. Great product with a less than great supporting manual.

Quote: Hank One thing I've never understood is why people include hangars, insurance and annuals when they calculate "operating cost."

I bet you'll be happy to see the new baffling in place of your old doghouse shroud.

Quote: dlthig Go to planequest.com. There are operating costs on the left side. I made an initial spread sheet to compare some types. PM me or tell me how to post. I looked at planequest.com and found some of the numbers to be unrealistic. I threw together a spreadsheet of my previous years expenses and wanted to share. Included in my yearly maint. cost is eddy current test of Hartzell prop ($250), electric gear and the addition of an EDM 830 diplay head ($1090.00). The hanger fee based on $100/mo payment to airport property management after already purchasing a hanger worth nearly as much as my plane.
