Quote: allsmiles Uhh... guys, Lycoming manufactures the engine and Lycoming honors the warranty. I would listen to Lycoming!! Anyone can say whtever they want but they are not responsible or liable. Use common sense and LISTEN to Lycoming. Do not discount the voice of experience over some "wannabes" out there who talk without any substance.
-
Quote: WardHolbrook I would point out again, that neither Continental nor Lycoming seem to have this metallurigical thing quite figured out yet as evidenced by their all to frequent cylinder, cam, crankshaft and case recalls. I guess solid research and the laws of thermodynamics are not to be used to refute OWTs. Just a question... How come most jump planes and glider tow planes seem to make it to TBO just fine? You'd think that those engines would be eating cylinders at prodigious rates. They don't. I suggest that money spent taking an online course on powerplant management at AdvancedPilot.com would be well spent.
-
As with supernatural beings, you choose what you want to believe. I think the thousands of engines experience, design -level knowlege of the metallurgical minutiae, and conservative attitude slightly outweigh opinions of such mechanics who may have owned a few lycomings, seen perhaps scores of them through periods greater than five years, and maybe even have worked on hundreds in passing. Personally, I choose to take greater stock in the former with regards to the one lycoming I depend upon and maintain. Wives' tales indeed!

There seem to be some good points, both common sense observations as well as references from other researchers in this discussion. The fact remains, however, that Lycoming themselves recommend guarding against "shock cooling". My reference is "Lycoming Flyer Key Reprints" part "Avoid Sudden Cooling of Your Engine" that begins with: "Sudden cooling is detrimental to the good health of the piston aircraft engine. Textron Lycoming Service Instruction 1094D recommends a maximum temperature change of 50° F per minute to avoid shock cooling of the cylinders." The article continues on to describe the various engine conditions that may result from exceeding these guidelines, procedures to avoid etc. I'll keep a copy of the reprints for a few days here

On the "J" it's a simple matter of taking off the lense retaining ring (screws), removing the bulb retaining ring (I use a bent screwdriver as the access is a little tricky) and pulling the PAR46 bulb far enough out to remove the two wiring screws on the back of the bulb. I use aluminum tape to lightly affix the lense to the lense retaining ring for reinstall.

Anyone else looking forward to Motorla Xoom?

Picked up the xoom wifi yesterday at costco (see my other post about not making Sun N' Fun, so had a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket); OpenFlightGPS runs pretty well on it. The GPS is 50 times better than that on my Samsung Galaxy S phone, which barely works. The hardware is a little heavy, but the processor is fast, it hasn't crashed once, and the screen is pretty nice. It's a nice piece of hardware, although it should have cost about $200, instead of $600. OpenFlightGPS still has some warts, and I'll say it again "OpenFlightGPS ain't no ForeFlight", but if anyone on the list wants in on the beta test (especially anyone with a tablet) please contact me at 'openflightmap@gmail.com', and I'll get you a free copy. It will install side-by-side with OpenFlight Map. Roger -
On 3/30 at about 3pm, we turned back to Albuquerque from Gainsville, TX after reviewing the developing situation. There was a minute of regret Thursday morning after reviewing the progs ... then the bad reports started coming in, vindicating our conservative attitude! Oh well; maybe Osh!

Maybe some competition will help these wacky prices (and mitigate anticlimactic product announcements).

Last time I changed out my GE4522/14v 250W landing light I used the 'Galaxy' (not GE) bulbs from Spruce - for one thing, certainly DO NOT recommend those galaxy bulbs. Both that I bought had the entire filament assembly laying on the bottom of the bulb in very short order - not sure if it was a bad manufacturing run or what, but this time I bought GE bulbs. Now I see that the genuine GE 4522 bulbs seem to be orientation-designed, but with no documentation and haven't found any by searching the web. And of course since it was some time ago that I replaced with the Galaxy bulbs, I don't recall what the proper orientation is. I'm guessing that it's the little metal half circle that goes up, but if anyone who knows or could give a quick peek at their installed 4522 and post the config I would greatly appreciate it! In the photo you can also see a glass 'tab', the location of which corresponds with the 'top' of the metal half circle, which is pointed to by the red arrow. Might be that there is a slot in the mount where that goes, but would like to cover bases before I go out to install it tomorrow. Thanks for any help -

Sensata klixon rocker switch group buy?
rogerl replied to rogerl's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
The specs can be found here: http://www.flamecorp.com/Catalogs/Sensata_CB/pdf/SENSATA%20CIRCUIT%20BREAKERS.pdf On page 45 It is my impression from his email that it's 5 of EACH; those printed parts (translucent covers) are probably the 'custom' part. I'll double check, and I'll also see if they might be either a lot cheaper or smaller lots if the custom covers aren't part of the deal - most of us probably already have the covers, and I think they are snap-on covers. I know one of my covers broke in two, and upon examination they have plastic hooks (u-shaped) things that fasten it onto the base rocker switch. Now I'm not sure about getting them off without buggering a switch up ... given the age it might not work out. Possibly getting them in unmarked lots would be the way to go - will report back early next week. I think the strobe cb in sensata/klixon lingo would be 20TC4-BB-20-SR12507-156-8 -
Anyone interested in getting together to order a bunch of the elusive mooney rocker switches? This is what I would consider ideal: > Application - 70's Mooney aircraft > Flush mount > Translucent smooth actuator > 20TC4 series > > sensata klixon rocker switch SR12507-156- > 1 Lndg Light 20 Amps > 2 Nav Light 5 Amps > 3 Anti Collision Light 10 Amps > 4 Pitot Heat 10 Amps > 5 Boost Pump 10 Amps > 8 Strobe Light 10 Amps > 18 Radio Master 3 Amps And here's the quote: hello Roger, I do not stock these units - each would have a 5 piece minimum order and a complete part # would be as follows: 20TC4-BB-20-SR12507-156-1 woulb the Landing Light, the Nav Light would be 20TC4-BB-5-SR12507-156-2 and so on. The lead time is 8 / 10 weeks ARO - $155.00 each Thank you, Jim Finegan Flame Enterprises ph - 301-668-0636, fx - 301-668-0638 jim@flamecorp.com 70 Thomas Johnson Dr Suite 122 Frederick MD 21702

The pad I would really like to see is the Notion Ink, but that seems to be in the vapor stage for quite a while (ok, maybe not KSN 770 mode, but almost). The reasoning is that they supposedly will sport a 'dual' technology screen, one of which supports sunlight readability (transflective), and it's supposed to automatically switch between depending upon lighting conditions - particularly suitable for cockpit use. I will be releasing "OpenFlightGPS", an upgrade to my well received "OpenFlight Map" in a week or two that brings simple moving map/GPS positioning to the Sectionals and the WAC's (and TACs/Flys soon). The "Student Pilot" version will be free (and "OpenFlight Map" will continue to be wholly free), but will be limited to 2 simultanously downloaded maps. Other versions will cost a small amount, but will allow greater numbers of cached maps. I'm looking for a 'pad' form factor (w/android 3) device in order to start porting "OpenFlight Map" and "OpenFlightGPS" over to it. Porting some portions to a tablet will prob. take a while as my 'Chart Chooser' is a little hokey and I'm sure will give me fits going to a large format screen. Unfortunately the FAA free digital downloads for the Enroutes (Low) are not in GEOTiff format, so I won't be providing GPS positioning on those charts until/unless FAA chooses to distribute in that format. -
Quote: peter I'm a little confused. Rogerl reported he had a a unit fail to power up on the ground, and later had the replacement unit restart in flight. The first failure was a confirmed hardware fault. The second unit has not yet been received at Aspen for analysis.

...Does the PFD battery back-up indicate how much the battery is charged? or when it is operating on the battery as a power source? It sounds like the power supply or ground becomes loose / disconnected. Comes alive when power is restored, dies when power and battery run down... ... It was in a perpetual reboot mode as a result of a low battery according to the DKK Avionics tech. He said the issue would clear up after a good recharge....
-
Quote: rogerl Turns out that the PFD unit itself did have issues; it lasted about 5 months / 60 hours. Other experiences with the equipment might help to establish if there is a pattern. I have to add that Aspen support is great - Santa Fe Aero sent their installer down to my hanger at KABQ the next day with a new unit from Aspen. I suppose it didn't hurt that Aspen is based in Albuquerque. My personal take-away here is to pay attention to the boot up time - if it changes for the worse, and obviously not due to temperature, beware.

"Tweety Bird" - wife's name is pronounced "Twee". One of these days will have a "G" rated nose art affixed (disney will get his cut); will have to forgo the all yellow paint job though, as I don't want to be confused with "Big Bird" !!

From what I am gathering, EGT should peak in the vicinity of 1500 (or more). I am seeing max EGT's of more like 1400, and the absolute max I have seen in flight at about 10,000' is 1435 or so. Does anyone know if this is normal for the IO360 in a '78 J ?
