  1. Tablor, I have not found "subscriptions" to work so well.... I just go with "view new posts", and try to remember it all.... If you want to go back to a thread that has not been updated it is easy enough to use the "search" function to find the thread. - with that note, I just earned "won't leave status" -a-
  2. Spectacular Iphotos... I like the one of Monument Valley with the reflection of the M20window the best. Nice plane too!!! -a-
  3. Rockers can also be in the form of a circuit breaker. For example: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/pbrocktbrkr.php Many options of color, load, dual, protected (clear cover) etc...
  4. Quote: Mitch I personally think that you should change your handle to The Mooney Pilot Formerly Known as Pilot16L !
  5. Dave, Are you considering using machined sheet metal in place of old style plastic overlays? Best regards, -a-
  6. Would you consider LED post lights? Available from Aircraft spruce. One LED can light up the face of an important instrument or two. I had two in my C, I believe they dimmed with the other lights, but I don't recall. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/70844.php -a-
  7. Brian, No market crash required, it's done it's part already. The Rs are not as old as some of the Ms (Bravos). The oldest ('94) do come up on the market below $150k. Something to look for, Eagles are good to. Theo, 10 years in a C, and I could not convince an adult to sit in the back seat, unless they really wanted to fly. I do like the idea of the Duet though. Brian Painter has a good idea on how to fold down the seat back in the M20C. The Ovation's rear seats fold, I don't think you even need a tent if you go camping this way.....? -a-
  8. Brian I think she may be happy with an Ovation too.... There is lots and lots of alloted space back there..... -a-
  9. Conom06d, "Fortunately" There is a thread for this already. You will be looking for plugs undo / redo or service the magnetometer....or leave the system unslaved.... http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=posts&forumid=3&threadid=1164 Best regards, -a-
  10. Have you seen the sporty's hand held with the ILS? http://sportys.com/pilotshop/product/14807 It's not as cool looking as some of the other radios, but it is the only one with ILS that I know of. A portable waas GPS and the Sporty's radio / ILS looks like a good back up system to me. Keep in mind that these items are for situational awareness only, and are not the primary plan for IFR navigation. Both are better than a 1/2 full water bottle on the glare shield.... Best regards, -a-
  11. Larry, From my M20C experience.... There is a readily available post for all things to be dimmed under the left side of the instrument panel. The dimmer switch is up in the ceiling, but the "wire to" position is only a short distance from your instruments. There should also be a single light bulb aimed at the fuel selector switch very near by this post. Of course, you should probably have your A&P / electrician helping you with this one. Overall it is very easy since most of the new lights that are avilable are LED and draw very little electricity. Best regards, -a-
  12. Response I didn't submit... "You don't need to be coy????" Too many gentlemen here to pile on such a miserable situation... I thought it was just better left unsaid. There isn't a happy customer in that camp. -a-
  13. Somewhere along the way, someone (your bank or salesman?) gave you a pink piece of paper and told you to bring it with you. I believe that's your temporary registration. Put it with your paperwork today, and you will have it when somebody asks you for it. Good luck on your trip back.... -a-
  14. Sven, I enjoyed your photos. My mooney related ones are in my photogallery. One question for you...The license plate on Joe's car....9 toe joe, what gives? -a-
  15. Mike, Great gas price ! ! ! I wish I was a little closer to you.....
  16. "Do you know how to print the entire chart on multiple pages in sequence so they are legible? I'm printing but the entire chart prints on one page and its illegible. Thanks." PK, I am experimenting with importing the files into PowerPoint, followed by printing different sections. I have yet to find another source that automatically frames out sections. Duat.com came close, but only on VFR charts. It allowed for the movement of printing frames all over their chart. Nice idea, but still took alot of manipulation. I am also going to try and borrow a very large format printer next week and see if I can print them at full size to begin with. I'll share what I find out... Best regards, -a-
  17. Quote: csfahey the entire region has any more charts left in stock with none planned until the next update which will arrive late next week. This happens a lot where I live toward the end of the chart cycle.
  18. Interesting question... I briefly considered wave riding on a windy day in my M20C a few years back. Low RPM, low manifold pressure and I was enjoying low powered flight. This was at lowest settings in the POH. Settings outside the POH, probably don't maintain level flight, unless the oragraphic lift is really strong! There is probably a cylinder head temperature and oil temperature to maintain. (see green on the indicators) Cold cylinders will fit tightly around the cylinder rings and generate additional wear. Low power settings will really allow for cool cylinders. I am not sure what carmalizing an engine is, Banjo, can you add detail to this? Best regards, -a-
  19. Thanks for throwing the engineers a bone!!! From an energy balance point of view.... Energy in (fuel burned) - Energy out (exhaust and cooling) = heat retained (temperature). Fuel burned: WOT, max rpm, max fuel flow. The engine is not going to know there is extra weight in the back. All of the fuel is turned into heat. Cooling: Since you climb at constant speed and accept given rate, cooling is maintained at a constant (air speed through the dog house, geometry of the doghouse and OAT must be kept the same to make this statement true.) What will be different. climb rate (at constant speed), Angle of attack while cruising. If you wanted to maintain the same airspeed under different load conditions, more power would be required at heavier loads. Same airspeed, would result in higher cylinder temps. (theoretically speaking). I am thinking....Outside air temp, density altitude, baffle geometry (changes) would be more likely to change cylinder temps than a few hundred pounds in the cabin..... 20. Take a look at how much the tail sweep actually is. Anyone with the ADF wire still on the tail will recognize the length of the spring required to adsorb all of the tail motion. In some cases with the trim all the way up the ADF wire is laying on the roof of the fuselage. Don't let anyone tighten your ADF wire while the trim is in the up position. It leads to a huge surprise after take-off. Best regards, -a-
  21. Does it need to go exactly in the same place? I know the wording is exact, and the location is sometimes general in description. The content of one of the placards is probably the before landing check list or something that literally could go anywhere. There is a placard on the window, for the window, that says do not open above X mph. Could you put the other placard somewhere on the window in a similar fashion? Best regards, -a-
  22. Jose, You are now approved for Looooong flights. -a-

  24. I have hard proof that the two bladed prop is more efficient that the three bladed prop.... The three bladed prop can only hold two towels "naturally", the two bladed prop can hold up to four without assistance! (Add smiley winky face here....) Best regards, -a-
  25. Nick, Oil can be burned, leaked, or vented... [1] Leaks... I believe the tubes that OR75 is referring to are the oil return lines from the valves back to the oil pan. It is a good observation, many a drip can originate from these small hose clamps. Another drip source is the quick change oil valve at the bottom of the oil pan. These can get old and drip too. Old valve covers leak through their old style cork seals. Evenly tightening these old screws can stop the leaks. Have your mechanic update cork seals for the new silicone style. Take a good look at the back of the engine where the magnetos and oil screens are. Serious oil leaks can be found here... Some cases leak between halves. These are all accesible through the side panels or removing the top of the cowling. Oil leaks usually will leave a tell tale mess inside the cowling. I am pretty sure the floor of the cowl should be clean unless oil is dripping in there. Q: Is it clean inside the cowl? [2] Burned I concur with Piloto on how to determine if the oil is burned by inspecting the exhaust residue in the pipes. If oil is exiting through the cylinders, it will show up in the exhaust pipes and on spark plugs. Q: Is oily black material showing in the exhaust pipe? [3] Vented Is there a way to measure how much gets vented without investing in expensive recovery equipment? I saw an experimental with a plastic bottle at the end of the case vent. (I don't believe this would work for a Mooney). Vented oil leaves by the vent tube that has it's end overboard. Vented oil does not appear anywhere inside the cowling. When checking for proper venting. The vent tube should have a small hole near the engine. This allows venting in the event the vent tube gets blocked (by ice). [4] Observations I found that long climbs at high power pushed alot of oil overboard in my O360. 1 qt every 5 hours, and it seemed like alot for an engine with 1,200 hrs SMOH. Best regards, -a-
