  1. After watching the video, to me, it seemed your approach was flat and that you didn't hold the nose off and landed on all three wheels. It can be camera angle or whatever, but it just seemed like both approaches were dragged on. Personally I am a fan of the go-around. I probably do one or two a year in the 150 hours or so I fly. I can only speak for myself, but I had to learn about the sight picture and speeds in my Mooney. I think I had 100 hours when I purchased it [750 now]. Don Kaye did an excellent DVD on landing technique and it is a good use of $20. There isn't a person on this board that hasn't biffed it in a few times when he/she should have gone 'round. Thanks for sharing.
  2. That is a good one Gary! This one came in first, it really touched me. When I was growing up, my dad was a controller at a Class D airport- Camarillo, to be exact. If you've been there awhile (1988-2004), you'd recognize Andy Z. At first, the tower was a 5th wheel with large windows (link), mounted on two SeaLand trailers, and with lots of radio equipment that the controllers would hang out in and call traffic, before they built what they have now. I hung out there a lot when I was 11-15 years old, and knew the make and model of planes by sight. The controllers even had a computer that had on it the newest Microsoft Flight Sim, FS 3.0- I played it there A LOT! One day when I was 12, a pilot offered rides to the controllers, and my dad talked him into taking up our family. I got to the airport and there was a beautiful yellow PT-17 Stearman, done in the Navy trainer scheme. I waited anxiously for my turn to go up- watching him take off and land from the base of the tower with my other family members. Finally, it was my turn. The ride was unbelievable! Wearing a leather cap, we flew around Saticoy and over by Santa Paula. Early on in the flight, he showed me how to control the plane with the control stick, and let me fly just about everywhere! I was speechless during the whole flight! When we were back on the ground, I looked up at him and offered him the $6 I had in my pocket for gas. I looked at him like he was a god. He just smiled, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Keep your money, but if you ever have the chance to pass this along, do it." To this day, I still do! Thank you, Dave
  3. Want some good reading about who inspired us to be pilots? Have Kleenex ready for a few: http://mooneyambassadors.com/136532.html?autoAdd=true&cc=0.8269558524164643 Add your own story if you like.
  4. Peter is checking with the event administration. Doesn't see a big problem because event starts at 10:00 a.m. Will post more as I have it.
  5. I think we do have a thread in the Florida section. I will ask Peter if there is wiggle room on the 8:30. The more the merrier!
  6. Okay folks, if you are coming to Page, I need to know your name and tail number so I can get it to Peter. The LoPresti event is not space limited and is only a few hours in the morning. Email to MooneyAmbassadors@charter.net Thank you
  7. Fly It Forward. Our new campaign for 2013. We all had someone who inspired us to follow our dreams of aviation. Now it is your turn to Fly it Forward.. Tell us your story of who inspired you!
  8. I just found out the Meet and Greet will be at the Hilton Palm Springs, which is steps away from the Palm Springs Convention Center, the home of the premiere General Aviation show of the year. More details to follow....
  9. Sounds great Dave. We will be at Tahoe next weekend. Hope to see you somewhere!
  10. Hello all, Just wanted to let you know about a little happening at AOPA Summit at noon on Saturday October 13th. Mitch and I will be having a California Dreaming Meet and Greet in the Meet Up room. The "Meet-Ups" will be in the Summit schedule. We will have some California airport trivia, a few games of chance, some munchies and fun prizes. Of course if you are a California pilot and not a member of CalPilots, you will be given an opportunity to rectify and join up. Fun music, photo ops, games of chance and munchies? All compliments of the California Pilots Association, and yours truly Vice Presidents of Fun. Come and see us! We will also be in booth #11 off and on during Summit.
  11. If any MooneySpace folks are planning to attend next weekend's big event in Tahoe, please let me know by PM or email: MooneyAmbassadors@charter.net I need a good number for wristbands and meal passes. I hope to see a lot of Mooney Tails with the Tahoe sunset in the background.
  12. Righto, I am so happy about the tours. We all made the suggestion last year, and voila! Yes, fingers crossed for good weather for us VFR pilots [working on rating!] We will be able to let you know about the Friday dinner, but it might be late notice.
  13. Becca, I think that once folks get to Fredericksburg they might not want to make the hop in the airplane to Kerrville. I am serious. Owners get their planes all spruced up for the judging and probably want to stay put. With that said, I think it is so FAB that Trey organized the tour. It is a magical place, and in my optimisim I think it can be a productive place again. Looking forward to seeing our Mooney family in Texas, next month!! Oh my
  14. You are absolutely right Gary, both events are well established and are perfect for our Ambassador mission of supporting Mooney and promoting GA. Peter volunteered to be the point person for the Page Aviation day. He worked with the event administration to get the four or five spots for our airplanes. When I was interviewing David LoPresti for the AOPA article on charitable events, he suggested they have a Mooney-themed event. I offered to help get the word out on this fun monthly breakfast that supports ALS research and features CarolAnn Garrett. CarolAnn has flown around the world three times now with her latest adventure ending just this spring. If there are other events that folks would like to turn into an Ambassador display, just let me know and I will walk you through the process. Again our best events are ones that give us access to the flying and non-flying public. Being a point person is actually painless and very rewarding!
  15. I would call LASAR right away and order the up and down locks. I have had the same experience only it hit my wrist so hard I thought it was broken. LASAR makes a great STCd replacment that I believe is made of steel versus aluminum. It is an easy fix. You will be surprised when you take off the old stops, most likely they will be egg shaped. It won't hurt to check the tip of your J-bar too. Sometimes that piece gets mishapened too.
  16. The Ovation gear speed is 140 kts. My screaming usually reminds Mitch

  19. Hey Craig, you have done a remarkable job hosting for four years. It sounds like we all just need a mailing address for a check or a Paypal address for a "gift"-no fee taken out. Thanks for all you do and have done for our Mooney Family!
  20. That is funny Snoceano! And that is Mitch and his airplane in the cartoon. It is fun that there are three airplanes [not Mooneys!] here already. Fun times ahead.
  21. We are getting ready! Beach burgers, dogs, brats will be ready to start grilling about 5:30 ish on Saturday. If you are concerned about the fog, just know that it has been lifting most days between 10-noon. No guarantees, so do what you are comforatble with. Camping at the airport is $10. If you fly into San Luis Obispo I would highly recommend the San Luis Jet Center. Their tie down fee is the same as the County's and the service is impeccable. They are huge supporters of Oceano Airport. They have a courtesy car too. Hope to see lots of Mooney Tails at Oceano on Saturday.
  22. Looks great. You will have to hook up with some of the Mooney Ambassadors from Indiana. There is an event coming up: August 31-Sept 2nd. The 122nd Fort Wayne Air National Guard Base 3005 W Ferguson Rd. Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Ambassadors were specifically invited after the successful Indy Airshow. There should be five spots for display aircraft. Event website: http://www.fwairshow.com/ Point Person: Jim Elswick

If you are coming to TVL, please respond by PM or email MooneyAmbassadors@charter.net . We are looking forward to a great show at Tahoe. http://youtu.be/dRZUIXS9JeQ
  24. From another Mooney forum: "Just heard over the wire that N411JL has crashed outside of Adiran Michigan. It was at OSH. Indications appear to be a loss of control and hypoxia suspected by ATC." It looks like the pilot was not injured per a relayed transmission.
  25. Here is a great, free, opportunity to come to the Mojave Air and Space Port in October. Hope we have lots of Mooneys coming in. Mitch and I will be there Friday and Saturday nights. Open to all, whether a CalPilot member or not. But be warned that it is a goal of mine to increase membership so bring $35 for the first year's dues! http://youtu.be/5CPKEHdwyFw How many Mooneys can you count???
