  1. As for the reason for the change to the thicker tube, I believe it was required on the 6 cylinder models to add increased support for the heavier engine. To speed up assembly through more parts commonality, Mooney decided to equip all frames with the thicker tubes, even the J model. Not sure how true that is, but it would make perfect sense.
  2. I just saw above the serial number range listed, which looks like it split in the 1990 model year. 24-3218 and up were the ones factory equipped with the 2900# GW. My bird is serial 24-3222 so about the 4th one with the new higher gross weight.
  3. You have a 1990 and it didn't come with the increased GW already? That's strange, I thought all MSE's had it from the factory? For reference, my 1991 is 2900lb max gross.
  4. I believe it has to do with the lighting setup. If you have the enclosed wingtips, the tailbeacon X will not work.
  5. That 201 windshield would probably fetch a pretty penny!
  6. Glad you got it sorted out!
  7. Glad you found the source. How much oil did you lose getting it to Toronto? Who was the last shop to have the governor off and not put the spacer back in?
  8. ‘91 MSE. Been having an issue lately with my dome lights. They will often be intermittent. I have two separate switches in the headliner, one for the rear seat and baggage area, and another for the front seats. There is power, I even replaced the fuse by the battery. On bright, about 2 of the 4 bulbs light up, on dim sometimes only one lights up. If I tap the covers that hide the lights, they will all spring to life. Getting really tired of having to do that though. Is it something as simple as a corroded socket or connection perhaps? Everything appears fine, but maybe it would be a good idea to hit all of the contact surfaces with a scotch brite or something? Has anyone else dealt with this? Thanks!
  9. Are those ski pole grips on the yokes? Neat idea.
  10. I got a very good rate with Air1 Insurance. Shoot them an email they are quick with putting together a quote for you.
  11. My '91 J has the tow limit indicator from the factory, along with the steering stops.
  12. I'm a 737 Captain for a major airline here in Canada. Not sure your location, or if any advice I could provide would be relevant, but ask away I'll do my best to at least point you in the right direction. Feel free to send a PM if you'd prefer.
  13. For what it’s worth, my home airport is at 4000’ ASL so I’m already down a couple inches of manifold. I usually leave the throttle WFO from takeoff until top of descent. I run 2700 for takeoff, 2600 for climb, and anywhere from 2500-2300 for cruise depending on how high up I am. Then, I lean to go either rich or lean of peak depending on if I’m flying fast or to save gas. Don’t overthink it, you can always change your mind.
  14. What Rags said. Throttle should be the last adjustment you make, after RPM and mixture. Especially when it’s efficiency you’re after, keeping the throttle plate wide open allows the engine to “breathe” with the least restriction.
  15. Can I ask why you took your Mooney to Rocky Mountain for an annual when there are about 4 other (better) shops at Springbank?
  16. This is why pressurized magnetos were invented.
  17. My MSE has them. 15 as you mentioned. I do have a factory installed DME and ADF. A quick peruse of Controller seems to show that older models did not have them installed, but it seems most of the “round window” J’s do. Not sure if there’s a correlation there or not.
  18. Man, I really like the paint scheme!
  19. Hows' your dipstick tube? I've seen leaks at the bottom seal there before. If the dipstick is in too tight and the tube isn't lockwired properly, unscrewing the dipstick can actually loosen the tube a bit and cause a leak at the bottom. Can be fixed with a new O-ring and tightening the lockwire on the tube.
  20. Mine is silk screened onto the visor itself. It flakes off now that it’s old.
  21. Mustang maintenance does all of my work. They are outstanding. Highly recommend.
  22. That's a great idea, thanks! However, I'm looking not only to have it at hand, but also to sort of put my Mooney back to "factory spec" for a lot of things. A nice new visor with sharp printing would look a lot better than an old worn out one.
  23. The "cruise power schedule" on my sun visor is worn off. Would be handy to have right there instead of diving into the iPad. Is anyone aware of an existing replacement? The actual visor is out of stock at LASAR (I've got a J model.) The visor itself is in excellent condition, just some of the silk screening has worn off over the years. If there isn't one already, I may look into having a bunch made up, say white printed on clear vinyl.
  24. I would not fly it until you get the leak fixed. Its one thing to throw 8 quarts in it if your shop is 20 minutes away, it's another to try and fly 6 hours. I mean, it's gotta be coming from SOMEWHERE. Where is the plane currently? If you're in Alberta I may be able to help.
  25. Awesome thanks fellas!
