  1. Just to be clear, this analysis is ONLY M20R models and does not state that Ovations are any more or less susceptible to accidents than any other Mooney model. Any yes, I fed the data into AI and then edited/clarified as necessary.

  4. Nope. Weather was OK. We had a microburst the previous day that destroyed about 6 planes at the open tie down ramps. But weather not a factor on this day. As I mentioned, an eyewitness has the plane coming in hot, hit hard, bounce, porpoise, strike prop and lose all control.
  5. He was cleared into 35R which is the shorter 5000ft runway (the other 35R - 6500 ft) is. A friend who saw the accident said it was a hard landing with bounce and porpoise, strike and total loss of control. Took them nearly 4 hours to get the plane off the runway. Apparently, at least 3 occupants, all transported by paramedics. Although I hear they're OK.
  6. No… he’s coming in over the Ridge 35R. Winds at HND can change from one end of the runway to the other. But he’s definitely high and fast.
  7. Just passed by the South Ramp again. Doesn’t look like has struck the tail. Looks like hard landing, gear collapsed, loss of control - and iff the runway. Looks like he went through some steel fencing that cut thru horizontal stabilizer like cheese. Seriously lucky to be alive I think.
  8. HND is my home base. We have a lot of landing accidents here - coming into HND from the south there’s a ridge of mountains you have to come over and if you’re not careful or get distracted can find yourself high, fast and a lot closer to the threshold than you want to be. It’s why there’s no precision approach into HND - the glideslope is 6.5 degrees from KATYU - which is only 3 miles from the threshold. Need to decide to go around early if not stabilized. It seems like he tried to wrestle it down - which I could have done in my Cherokee 235 but would never do in my Ovation. I wonder if he had too many recent hours flying the amphib. Just glad everyone’s OK.

  11. Ouch. You'll be burning through cylinders at an extreme rate! I live and fly in Las Vegas where it's usually super-hot. I rarely get CHT's above 390. Sometimes 400-410 in a climb until I drop the nose a bit. Also, I fly LOP at cruise. Something is wrong with either your fuel flow, baffling, and sensors. That is not right and should be setting off alarm bells if you're looking to buy that bird.

  13. I have one of the expensive O2 finger monitors. I have an Inogen G5 (which I mentioned earlier, I only use for me and I have an Aerox bottle that is for pax and my backup). I regularly fly 17k or so in my O3. Using the Inogen, I’m 96% or higher. Using the Aerox, the same. Like all nasal cannula, you have to remember to breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth. If you’re a mouth breather you wont get any O2 from any system. If my Inogen doesn’t detect O2 demand (breathe in through the nose) after a short time it beeps loudly with an alarm. The alarm is nearly impossible to hear in the cockpit with the Bose on. The Inogen is a reliable unlimited source of oxygen. I use it anytime time I’m at or above 8k which is basically all the time. I never worry about how much is left in the tank, how much it costs to refill, or who can refill it. Refilling the Aerox can sometimes be a PITA. At my home base KHND the FBO charges $150 to fill it. Luckily I have a friend with a refill kit in his hangar, but coordinating with him can be hit or miss. I fly a lot, primarily XC. I’d say there’s a 30% chance that there’s portable O2 refill available on field during my trips. The last thing I want to do when I get to my destination or on a fuel stop is to have to drive around trying to find someone who will refill the bottle. If I solely use the Aerox bottle, I’ll be lucky if I have enough O2 for 6 hours. I love the Inogen!
  14. You can can get a refurbished one for a lot less at majorcpap. I bought a refurbished unit and it has worked perfectly. BTW - I use the Inogen for me. For passengers or right seaters I have a portable Aerox system. That is also my backup in the unlikely event the Inogen fails.

  18. Vey interesting - I did a similar analysis a while back of all Ovation accidents, not just fatal (i'm looking for the results I know they're somewhere...) - A large percentage were landing accidents due to bouncing and botched go arounds. When I find it I'll post it.
  19. I have an inogen G5 that I use anytime above 8k. I've been up to 18k with it and my sats are in the 90's. My Ovation doesn't have Factory 02. I have an Aerox bottle for passengers. I love the Inogen - best solution out there. Refilling the Aerox bottle is a PIA and the prices are all over the map.
  20. Yes, @donkaye, MCFI - I regularly fly 10-17K in my Ovation that doesn’t have factory O2. I have an Inogen G5 and it is spectacular to all the altitudes I fly (up to 18k). I have a supplemental tank which is for passengers. The Inogen is so easy and convenient I generally use it any time I’m above 7k. Why not! Couldn’t recommend it enough.

  22. Just to follow up and to maybe point @Reed Campbell in the right direction - Sent the controller board to Don Maxwell who fixed it for a few hundred dolllars. Has worked perfectly even since.

  24. I've been using GP for quite a while. I've always preferred it over FF but these smart charts are a killer feature. Love it! The video @midlifeflyerposted is a good example of its use (if you can bear the presenters).
