  1. Flew back from visiting family...and someone's already looking to start his lessons!
  2. Different question, similar topic. I've had my J for 2 years now, put on 50-60 or so hours a year, no claims. My insurance is slightly higher than when I first purchased. Aside from about 20hrs in an Arrow during training, the J is my only complex. Is this to be expected, or should I shop for a new broker?
  3. That's where about half of navy primary flight school is. Keep an eye out for young mavericks and gooses learning their trade in t-6 texan 2s quite possibly doing aerobatics and formation flights and some young rotorheads doing whatever helicopter pilots do. Well be less busy on weekends.
  4. Come to Burlington! You may get to hold short for a whole section or squadron of F-35s!
  5. I wonder if they'll start making navy officers learn sextant again, and maybe retrofit the P8 with a sextant port like my P3 had. As a former nfo, I'm bothered by how much I just use gps, it wasn't allowed in flight school. (Also bothered by my paltry system knowledge and weak checklist disciple compared to then, but it isn't my full time job anymore)
  6. Flew to Deer Lake Newfoundland over Labor Day this past year, it was great! Really pretty area! Some things to note though: Most Canadian airports don't let you do things on your own--if the FBO or airport ops is closed (like after 5pm or on weekend/holiday) then you pay $100-$200 for them to come in and unlock the gate/turn on the lights so you can land or pre-flight and take off. There is almost no aviation motor oil on the island. I was about 1/2 quart short, had already used my travel quart at my fuel stop, and called every airport on the island and finally found some guy who had a few quarts. Gas was pricey (unsurprisingly for an island, in Canada)
  7. if you aren't one of these guys, you are non-participating
  8. Hmm, perhaps. I initially saw generators at about $1000 or so, now I think I've seen some for a few hundred, and a car plugin would be $50-$100 or so. However, it might be worth trying the car one for the Sake of Science. Also, I've done some maths (like James May). With only 150W available to heat an engine of 117kg AL and 5 kg mineral oil, its temperature would go up about 5 kelvin/hour. Yes, I know there would be environmental losses, so I cut the available power down by more than a third. Might still be worth a try, at least in chilly places rather than downright cold ones.
  9. Thanks for all the thoughts. It seems that the cigarette lighter is limited to about 120W, so I'll have to go for direct battery connection and make sure I can use it while the car is running. I'll look for something up Watts, hopefully something that can no kidding supply 500-1 kW. One thing I'd like to know, and product descriptions don't exactly say, is if an i.e. 1000W continuous power inverter with two outlets can supply 1kw to one outlet, or split between the two. Not an electric car, just converting real units to metric units. (There are two types of countries in the world. Those that use the metric system and those that have walked on the moon).
  10. As the winter comes and I find myself at an airport without convienent plugins I thought about buying an external power source for preheat. Then I remembered I already paid a lot of money for a portable 220kW power source. I looked online and I saw 110v/3amp inverter for a car. As best I can tell, my tanis is supposed to take 115v at 2amps. It seems like the power is there, does anyone know a reason why the volt mismatch would matter? Given where I am (dc area instead of vermont), I figure 30 min to an hour should be enough to warm engine to near 40 F. Since this is a temporary arrangement, idling my car for up to an hour a handful of times seems better than springing for a power source.
  11. So, what if you want to download to look at things like that when internet may not be readily available, such as reviewing weather brief during a flight?
  12. I do miss the old, simple METAR/TAF page...Could go straight there from google. Now I just get not found.
  13. I have Aspen MFD/PFD with synthetic vision. Aside from looking kind of neat, I don't really understand what it is for. I'm certainly not going to go on low level penetration raids with it. If I'm flying an instrument approach, I'm looking at glideslope/localizer and looking outside for lights, not synthetic vision. I often have it up because I have it and it is less boring than a blank background, but I'm having trouble seeing a real use for it. What am I missing?
  14. My A&P's best guess was a hard or banked landing with low tire pressure (tire pressure was a bit low). I don't recall a specific time when this would have happnd, but I'm not a great pilot so many of my landings I wish I could do better. He also said he could straighten it out. The plane is 45 min away, so I'll check the repair out next time I fly--probably in the next week or so for my night currency. Thanks again for all the help/advice!
  15. I don't think it was rolling over chocks. I flew from my home field, and my chocks were in the back, and I always chock the nose. May have been something else I rolled over though. Weird. Not sure how it happened, waiting to hear from my a&p about repair. Thanks for advice all.
