  1. @thomas1142 take a hard look at the EDM 900 setup...what gets put in the Primary column with nice green bars and a digital readout vice the light grey column. JPI programs that based on their opinion from a reading of the POH for your model and year. I didn't know this...so my Rocket got oil temp, oil press, and compressor inlet temp...the latter I didn't have with the old gauges. No fuel flow in Primary, no TIT either. The shop guys at AATG have convinced JPI after the fact though and I now have new config files to load...but either DIYor I pay someone here in OH to do it. Lesson learned: TELL the shop what you want in that nice Primary column and have them argue it out with JPI to your satisfaction before you show up to fly it away!
  2. Don...FWIW with only a few trials so far I've found the IAS vertical mode to be pretty squirrelly. If a big IAS change is entered after engagement it pitches very aggressively to make the airspeed correction and then porpoises while it hunts for the airspeed. Unusable as is. May be an install problem..may be the thing doesn't have great pitch damping in the control equations yet. I flew an LPV approach into KMIE yesterday. Rock solid in pitch until late in the game...I think I saw a whisper of pitch oscillation as the GP got skinny...but only one data point there, and mine's a mid body Rocket
  3. Ah. Didn't know that, I dont have a GDL88. GTX345R...
  4. Flight Stream not needed (had one removed). G3X touch provides Bluetoothe for all Flight Stream functions.
  5. Bottom right of the G3x...I click of the outer right knob selects "CHT" (or you tap the bar with a finger and then tap Chart in the menu)...voila, sectional or IFR Hi or Low charts
  6. Just brought this home two weeks ago. Magical
  7. Sexy. What he said about Rockets!
  8. Well, I preface with "what do I know".. . But I do run a $50+ million a year business so FWIW. It seems to me that Mooney has a competition problem. Cirrus. In that head to head battle, at virtually the same price point around $800k, Mooney is just outgunned. I think it's sexier. I think an airplane should have retractable gear. And I like FAST. Those three things are what Mooney has going for it. But Cirrus has everything else. Parachute. "Fast enough"--even if it's 20 knots slower, on most trips in real time it doesn't matter. Bigger feeling cabin. More Useful Load even with FIKI and/or AC. And don't forget...The parachute. I think what we see is the market segment willing to toss out all those advantages for an $800k new airplane is....small if it's advantages are 20 knots and sexy. 4 Acclaims in a year small. That's not a business, it's a cult following, and it won't pay the bills. It didn't. I think the right track starts with a variation on the "refurb old airplanes." Instead, build new ones that are irresistably priced. $100k for an engine. $100k for an airframe. $100k for avionics...but don't do dumb G1000 stuff --folks are wise to their $100k being orphaned by Moor's law. put in dual G500TXi s or dual G3Xs or even Dual Dynon's...make it an option. mark it up enough to pay the bills and hold some reserves..and figure out how to sell a beautiful, new, very fast, sexy airplane for $500k or less. Not $800k. Not without a parachute and all the advantages Cirrus has. Not enough wives will go for it. As one of my Saudi friends frequently says: "The Ministry of the Interior is dual-hatted as the Ministry of Finance". For $850k the MoF wants a parachute, and she can and will have one. I think what Mooney's proved at least 3 times now is that going head to head selling airplanes at the same price point as Cirrus is not gonna work. You know the definition of insanity. Time to do something different. Go where the competition ain't! probably too hard to do, and maybe Mooney is gone forever without a real visionary with very deep pockets. nickel on the grass.
  9. All...the Flight Stream 210 is sold via eBay. Other items still available but also are listed on eBay
  10. I used this today on a tip from the YouTube detailer Aviana Aircraft Detailing. I diluted this approx 5 : 1, spray on, let sit for 3-5 min, wipe off with towel. Repeated in a couple spots. Then clean and polish with 1:20 mix ONR in a spray bottle. Worked like a champ, no smell no fumes no headache. Whole belly done in about 40 min. Pro tip...get or borrow a padded mechanic's creeper!
  11. Right strobe light is out on 86 252/Rocket. See pic: 1. Anyone know what that is? Hoskins? Whelan? Part number? 2. Can the strobe tube be replaced alone, or is the strobe/position light all one unit? 3. If it's all one unit, clearly I'm going LED to replace them, prob with Whelen 650e`s, which oddly are cheaper than the non led replacement if I'm looking at the right thing! I looked and couldn't find this exact question answered elsewhere...if it has been a link to the correct thread is all I need! Thx
  12. I'd have done it for the K if I'd owned the airplane earlier! This would've been a lot cheaper! GFC 500 is super. A little odd in IAS mode but the overall integration is awesome Go for it!
  13. All, I've just finished up a complete new panel on my 86 Rocket and have three leftover items for sale. GDC-31--working perfectly and is magical. Turns GPS Steering from a WAAS navigator into "heading inputs" to a legacy autopilot (mine was a KFC200). Allows the airplane to fly a complete approach from the IAF to final in "HDG" mode on the autopilot, just switch to "Nav" and hand-set the new/final course on the HSI when intercept is set up. Magical. Great way to upgrade your approach capability at a really low price. $1000 OBO. FlightStream 210: AHRS and bluetooth, connect Garmin Pilot to your panel avioncs. Allows flight plan transfer from your tablet/phone running GP to an installed GNS or GTN navigator. Also provides attitude reference to GP Synthetic Vision on your tablet /phone, and pipes GPS from your navigator and any weather/traffic you have in the panel to Garmin pilot on the Tablet. $500 OBO. GDL-88. Perfect and complete. It was previously installed by prior owner when it was Mexican registered. Installed in US, but then neither the US government nor the Mexican government would issue a unique hex id for it so it could provide ADSB in or out. Removed and never used, but connectors etc were just removed during my panel overhaul. Everything is there. Makes just about any legacy non-ADSB transponder ADSB-out compliant and provides UAS ADSB-in traffic and weather. $3000 OBO. All include POH insert and STC paperwork. Please PM me if interested. PJ
  14. Somehow a lonely neuron is saying it recalls hearing of some Mooney rigging wizard up in...maybe Minnesota? Ever hear such a thing?
  15. Thanks guys. Engine overhauled by Victor in 2013...exhaust and engine mount by Rocket at same time Attitude...4 deg nose up on the ground..set correctly MSC: Maxwell did the prebuy, didn't have these as any of the minor issues. Was thinkng about taking it to him for first annual Next March anyway. I'll give them a call and see if they know a Rocket engine guy closer to me in OH in the meantime. I do have about 1/4 inch of up aileron on the left side in level flight so there's at least one small rigging issue
  16. Well, now you've shown me where to ask the questions running through my noggin. See, while 199 KTAS is great at 15k, the book speed for the Rocket is cloer to 208 or even 210. I'm slow. Could be the nice cold air? I did see 197 KTAS at 14k on 65 pct in Aug. Hmmm....??? Plus, I'm a bit hot. #2 and #5 both running hot enough that to keep them under 380 F I had to open the cowl flap to the cruise mark (252, electric, continuously variable cowl flap) And run a bunch of fuel through it. So the questions are: 1. Look at the green velocity vector (in the pic it's just to the left of the altitude tape). It's right on the horizon line, meaning I'm in level flight. BUT...look at where the nose is: about a degree or degree-and-a-half BELOW the horizon. So I'm pushing through the air just a bit like a wheel barrow. Any idea how to "fix" that? Or is it normal? Or would we not have this conundrum without this awesome display? could it be an empennage rigging change to get it all lined up? or is it a loading issue--need more weight in the back? (my plane CG is right on 47.73 inches--right on top of the fuel station. I thought almost perfectly balanced--definitely NOT "forward" like some Rockets. So, what's up with this nose low wheelbarrow thing? 2. the heat. Cowling was off when I got to the avionics shop this past Wed. I noticed a cut in the baffle seal about 2 inches long on the copilot's side, and there's a gap (or I imagine one) back in the aft pilot side corner where #2 is. Also when they put the cowling on they said the seal right in front of #5 wants to fold down rather than up. the question here is: do some holes in the baffles make this much difference? I have heard "yes"...so I'm very tempted to get this done very soon. Advice? 3.the heat. I don't have GAMIs. the spread at cruise leaned to 1500 TIT is about 120 F between hottest (#5) and coolest (#1) EGTs #1 and #6 run coolest CHTs. Go GAMI? What's that cost, about $1k? 4. NOT the HEAT--idle mixture. this is a Rocket only question. ON the ground the thing won't run smoothly at idle unless I lean almost 1/3 of the way out, usually around 3.4 gph keeps it smooth. A little less in Greeley at 4300 MSL. Slightly more alarming- if I were to push the mixture to full rich approaching the pattern, then chop to idle, it''ll stumble and nearly die. Except I'm quick to put the throttle back in to give it more air to get it leaner. Bottom line--I spend a lot of time fiddling with the mixture. Have gotten good at it already (about 20 hours in the machine) so not that worrying. But should something be done or is this "normal Rocket"???? If something should be done: who's "the GUY" to tweak the mixture on a TSIO-520NB in a Rocket? 5. AND last--cowling fasteners. I found some older posts on this. Painter painted all the fasteners, removing them made the paint flake off. I want all new SS fasteners. a. where do I get a "kit" that'll work for the Rocket? Or is it a stock M20K cowling kit? b. do I need the receptacles? Kits I see on SkyBolt specifically don't include them (and they don't seem to hint at where to buy them) thanks Paul
  17. A bit less "sailing" today. 72% power instead of 65%
  18. KGXY to KSLN this afternoon. RRRRRocket!
  19. Holy Crap! 300 kt grounspeed? I guess I'm going to have to push it up at least once for bragging rights @aviatoreb! I'll have GTX345R for ADSB in and out. no XM for now--gonna see how I like ADSB, and whether my copilot says she wants music from something besides her phone. Next Spring, inshallah.
  20. They gotta all be max power and I think there's a fair amount of whimsy involved in the absolute numbers. But I suspect the relative numbers may be reasonable for comparison. I have seen my Rocket doing 197 KTAS at 14k and 15k in Aug on 65 % power. It might do 205 at that altitude on 75% but I think the balls would have to be to the wall to get on that curve. Meanwhile I think I may see 50 knot tailwinds at 15k this weekend on my way from KGXY to I68, so I look forward to a pic or video of G3X groundspeed up north of 230 knots. That just puts a smile on my face that a Cirrus never woulda! Its all about elegance vs brute force engineering.
  21. Somewhere on the Interwebs
  22. Carusoam....this Rocket is a Millenium Falcon for 2019!! I think I'm faster than an Acclaim up to FL190...and even if it's "close" it's "close enough"! "I feel the need..."
  23. Yep, I have all that and it's properly stashed in the original POH. If need be I'll call Rocket tomorrow and ask them to clarify. Then I guess we'll see if we can get the 900 back to JPI for reprogramming and then back to CO this week in time for re install, test, and ferry back to OH next weekend. I wonder why the installer wouldn't want to confirm with the owner what he planned to have JPI program...before he sent it out. All part of my GA ownership education I guess. Oh, for a 30 year Chief Master Sergeant as a crew chief again...
  24. thanks...but "huh". FAA must've changed prior to 1986. My POH has "limitations" in section II rather than IV. and the "Kinds of Operation" section is a small paragraph that says "this is a normal category airplane approved for VFR/IFR day or night operations when equipped in accordance with FAR 91." No list. Section VII is "Systems" it lists things like "Attitude indicator (if installed)", which would seem to imply "optional", but things like fuel flow, MP, TIT etc do not have an (if installed) annotation. I wonder if that's all I get. I sense I'm going to have an argument with the installer about what should be Primary on the EDM...he's admitted they direct that to JPI based on their reading of the POH--JPI doesn't pick, they program the instrument based on what they're told. To change it they have to send it back to JPI...and I'm supposed to fly out there this Tuesday to bring the airplane home to Ohio next weekend. GRRRRR....
